I've always heard to never wash your car with dish soap because it strips away wax. So, dish soap.

use a very light cutting compound and a cutting compound pad with your DA sander.
don't have a DA sander? go buy one at the auto parts store. Meguiar's makes one that attaches to your drill. they are $30. works very well. you need one anyway for doing a proper polish and wax. go buy one. you will use it a bunch if you love your car...

Do not use a sander!
A sander is high rpm and will remove the clear coat damn fast.
Same with a 1 speed electric drill.
Use a polisher or a sander/polisher.
Porter Cables are nice but just over a $100. There are a bunch of cheaper ones around $50 or less. Harbour Freight has decent pads at $7 each.

I would think that starting with mineral spirits, followed by washing with dawn dish washing soap would be good. Mineral spirits will cut the wax, but leave you open to fish eyes when painting since it is petroleum based. So... wash with a grease cutter like dawn.

Try ammonia, that's what's used to strip wax off floors.

Use acetone. Do the bumpers first to get a feel for it. Use lint free rags and keep turning the rag. If you see it pull up color of the car STOP. Use new rags every 2 feet of surface area. Then hose down car with water and gentle liquid soap and use 1500 grit wet sand paper and gently wash car with sand paper.

DO NOT use sand paper on windows. When done wash with plain water and blow down car with air line compressor. If you dont have air line you can redneck dry with leaf blower. Make sure to open doors after your blow job and wipe down door jams. Now you should be ready to paint. Have fun !!

And BTW don't do what my ex girlfriend did. Daddy asked her to wash his 57 Chevy for his birthday and she washed it really good with Brillo. Happy birthday Dad.

If you respray the car why would you care about the the old clear coat btw ? i'd just use sandpaper if i respray it anyways.

Simple Green, then test with water to see if the wax is gone. ( beads or doesn't bead ) Then make sure to totally rinse the car to remove any Simple Green residue.
