View Full Version : Wanna-B-Spec Yaris
Davis (Dabuu) here with a new username because I wasn't feeling the old one anymore.
I like the idea of building my Yaris to B-spec rules, even if it doesn't show up as an eligible MY in SCCA's GCR. Since I'm not planning to compete, some of my mods will not be legal, hence the wannabe.
I figure this will be a good way to compare my times with legit B-spec-ers.

R: 5kg/mm / 280lb/in
Front dampners are not adjustable, but the rears are 14 way adjustable, already not legal for the class haha. I also like that Cusco supplies a linear spring for the rear. :w00t:

The rear has been adjusted to max low since I took this picture.
The center lock idea is pretty cool by getting rid of all the rubber bushings up front, but the aluminum teeth for the spanner wrench to lock onto are so weak that the edges start snapping off when torquing down to 80nM. Should've been made out of steel in my opinion.

Previously, I had Konig Dial-Ins in 15x7 +35. They were nice and light, but subjectively they looked okay, and I didn't like cleaning all 12 spokes. So I got rid of half the spokes:

Kosei K1's 15x7 +30 in Miata Spec, ~13.5lbs a wheel. They are hubcentric to the Yaris, easy to clean, and they clear the SE's larger front brake calipers. My rule of thumb is, if the wheels clear a Miata w/ Sport Brakes, they'll clear SE brakes lol.
The wheels are wrapped in 205/50R15 Dunlop Direzza Star Spec ZII. The rears do rub, so I will need to roll them in the future.
I still have a lot of stuff to do before I get back on track, but I'm aiming for TRD Cup @ Streets of Willow on August 19th.

Nice. And lol about the name switch. Too bad I don't know anything about auto-x/track rules.
When the dampers go out on Dory, I'll most likely get coilovers. I like the Tein Flex Z I have on the FR-S, so I might get a set for Dory in the future.
Thanks!
The Yaris' list of allowed modifications is puny compared to the Honda Fit's and Mazda2's lol, so I'll be adding things that aren't legal for the Yaris, but are for the heavy hitters.

The GCR line for the Yaris needs to be corrected and updated - no one at TMS cared, and no one was racing one, so its listing never got fixed. Should be 2007-2011 hatch, and then a separate listing for the 2012+ hatch, and one for 2007-2012 sedan. If they dont list them that way the wheelbase spec will be wrong. Also, if someone wanted to run an SE in BS they would need a separate spec line due to the difference in brake size - expect that to come with a weight hit due to "brake advantage" over the standard model.
I just put the pillowballs on snug with the spanner, and used loctite, they have been fine.

looking good! Subscribed
Thanks guys, glad you're enjoying the build. Hopefully there will be exciting track content that's worth posting. :)
I figured no one at TMS cares haha, and looking at some of the b spec races, they're dominated mostly by Fits and Minis. I wonder how the field would've looked if Toyota did support b spec.
Anyway, no worries here, I'm just out there to have a good time. The b spec times will be my motivation to push a little harder.
So I fabbed up some camber locking plates out of 1-1/4"x1/4" 1018 CRS flat bar that I had laying around.
I'm running Toyota's 3 dot camber bolt (I don't like the cam types), and wanted to prevent any positive camber slip when on track. Got the idea from the Suzuki Swift tuner, R's Racing.
Painted with some BBQ grill paint I had laying around.

Today, with the help of some buddies, I was able to install my TRD brake and clutch lines.
I never had any problems with ATE's fluid with my previous cars. It's nice having enough people to pump brakes, and watch the fluid level. Last thing you want is to run that reservoir dry, and then having to bench bleed the master.

It's hard to tell in this picture, but the rear uses 2 sets of brake lines. One for the torsion beams pivot point (towards the front), and one to the caliper.
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4293/35473686593_6e1a44d8af_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/W3FV96), on Flickr
The clutch line was surprisingly the most difficult to replace, only because the brake fluid just kept running down as we were scrambling to thread in the 10mm nut. Make sure you have plenty of fluid in the reservoir!
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4294/36237556486_a41d4f2cd6_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/XdbX3E), on Flickr
I also installed the Blood Sports Rear Torsion Beam Collars.
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4313/35474386083_9c46cbd33f_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/W3Kv5g), on Flickr
Since we had to disconnect the brake line at the beams pivot point, this allowed us to lower the beam from the vehicle. We used 2 jacks on each side, we didn't want to support the beam in the middle and risk bending it. The fit was spot on! The collars are made of delrin if anyone was wondering, good stuff!

Initial impression with city driving; I didn't feel any difference with braking or pushing in the clutch. I did just replace 10k mile hoses lol.
I can't wait to see how these work on track. :burnrubber:

Enjoying the thread so far. How do you find the torsion beam collars?
I was searching around google.co.jp and ended up finding SR Factory Blood Sports website, http://www.bloodsports.jp/product-group/10 (would love their coilovers <3) I asked www.rhdjapan.com if they could get their hands on it, and they emailed me back a couple days later with the link to purchase.
Go to www.rhdjapan.com and search ncp131. It shows that it's for the ncp131, but it should fit the ncp91 since the torsion beams are the same.
TRD japan also sells a set, but I wasn't sure how I was going to get my hands on it. Nengun has them listed, but I never delt with them.
I haven't noticed any extra NVH from them, I do notice less wiggle in the rear while spiritedly driving the on ramp this morning.

Did you sell your bilsteins when you got your cusco co's? If so how do you like the Cusco's compared to the B8's?

I wanna say it was like $200 after the middle man fees and shipping from Japan at the time.
No comparison. I love the coilovers because they are much stiffer than the spring/strut combo. No progressive springs here. :) The shocks are valved to match the spring rates. It's surprisingly compliant. Although it is stiff, it absorbs bumps around the city pretty well, it's not jarring your teeth on your grocery run. The misses doesn't complain about it. :D
Thanks Jason, here's to my welds holding up! :drinking:

Out of curiosity, have you done any power mods or is it allowed in your class that you'll be competing in or does the car really need any for autox? I didn't want to start a new thread about it and it's kinda hard to find info on people modding the current gen (MY15~ unless it's purely a facelift and entirely same powertrain). I've been really considering getting a new/newer yaris to potentially compete in as I do love these things and wish we got the old RS and the new Gazoo racing version.
Thirty-Nine, thanks! I love how aggressive the front of the '15+ are, big reason why I bought one. ;) Although, with the new '18 models coming out, I want to do an '18 front bumper swap, so I can run the Modellista front spoiler <3.
http://www.modellista.co.jp/product/vitz/image/fb_vitz.png
ZO, no power mods as of right now, engine and exhaust is all factory. I'm focusing more on suspension, and driver. When I feel the need later on, I'll add them. As of right now, the only power mod allowed for the Yaris is a K&N CAI. and yes, it's the same powertrain from '07-'18 in the U.S. which is great, engines are readily available at the salvage yards. :)
But I hear ya, I wish we recieved the RS. the '12+ SE is the closest thing we got minus the 4.3 fd lsd trans. So close. :(

@deng have you ever felt like you truly needed more power at autox? Lightweight underpowered cars are basically my first choice to drive around in, but I've never gotten a chance to drive one myself mainly because I don't want it to want to make me want to buy one immediately lol. I do keep waiting to see if they were going to end up adopting the mazda 2 skyactiv, but it is nice to have so many of those engines available to be picked.
I havent autocrossed the Yaris yet, but definitely want to. The only time I feel like I need more power is when I'm overtaken by a Skyline GTR at Buttonwillow's main straight lol. I had a cai, dc headers, and a tanabe catback at the time. Turbo, s/c, 2zr swap would help for the torque alone, but if I wanted real power, I would buy another car. I'm happy with the stock power.
Also, just realized that we're neighbors.

Hah, yeah I hear ya on just buying a different car. There's a reason as to why we drive underpowered cars.
Heh I'll keep an eye out for your car on the streets :) I'm definitely liking how koseis look on your yaris. I drive a whiteout 13 FRS lowered on TE37vs, but on stockers at the moment cause my wires are showing lol
ZO, TE37v's are gangster as fuck, my goal is to get some TE37 Sonics in 15x7 +35 sometime in the future. :)
Finally got my alignment at renowned alignment specialist West End Alignment in Gardena, CA. They are known for their track set ups. Forum after forum, you'll see nothing but praise. I finally ponied up the cash to get their legendary alignment, corner balance, and customer service. I called in for an appointment, and was lucky to get in the next day, it usually takes a week or two.
Darin and Chris of West End were straight forward about what they believed in, and that was: Function. But, they still wanted my input on ride height in order to understand what I wanted, and if it wasn't possible due to suspension geometry angle, they would let me know. They did a thorough interview with me about my car; what I use it for, what I'm looking for, what I want out of it. We all decided on an aggressive street set up for attacking the local canyons and track days. This was my favorite part of the whole experience.
I sat in the car for a little less than 2 hours as they adjusted the ride height, front camber, and front toe, all while keeping me in the loop of what they're doing. They raised the front and driver's rear from Cusco's factory setting. Even though I was bottomed out on the rear height adjuster, the car was lower on the driver's side, so they had to compensate. They checked the rear alignment and front caster. And silly me, I left the ABS bracket loose on the driver's rear from my brake line install, it was embarassing, but Chris resecured it for me.
Corner Balance was done with a little more than half a tank of gas, and the; spare tire, jack, and tools were removed from the car.
I totally recommend Darin and Chris if you live in SoCal and looking for a track alignment. I can't wait to see how these settings perform on track! It feels great on the street when I was driving home from work, I was actually surprised. I love the way my car now sits. I won't be winning any parking lot style points, but the driver's front gap without me in the car screams: Function.
Just found out that TRD Cup is actually on Sept 2nd, not this Saturday. :(
I'm itching to get back on track! Old video at Buttonwillow Raceway Park:

Hey ern, let me know when you guys do another photoshoot. :)
No doubt! Are there any days of the week that work best for you? Romario and I threw that last one together after work one day during the week, but if weekends work better for you, we can plan it a little better and easily make it happen.
Weekends work better for me. :)
Updated first post with vehicle's current specifications.
It was a hot day yesterday at Streets of Willow in Rosamond, CA. We were experiencing temperatures up to 107f/41c through half of the day, so it was miserable, and I didn't capture any footage because my dashcam overwritten itself, oh well. The last two sessions were cooler at 98f/36c, and everyone was starting to have fun!
SoW recently recieved a new layer of top coat, it wasn't a repave, but it was slick during the first session, it gradually became better as more tire compound was was embedded into the pavement.
Last time I ran the CCW configuration was when I first tracked the Yaris last November, and it was completely stock, I ran a 1:41.236 then.
My goal was to get into the 1:36 range, but with ambient temp hovering around 107f, I was consistently running 1:40s, which was a total bummer knowing I'm only 1 second faster lol. The last session was the coolest session of the day at 98f, and I was able to put down a 1:35.926, good enough for 2nd place in TRD Cup's Limited Class.

Nicely done!
41C sounds .. terrible. lol
-- Adam
Thanks hoji!
It was terrible, we were all sitting under the canopy asking ourselves why we even came to the track lol.
Since I didn't have any video, I was looking at the Analysis portion of my Harry's Lap Timer, specifically my fastest lap in 98f weather. I'm surprised to see that the Yaris actually made it to 90mph down the main straight! And I'm not sure how accurate the power graph is, but I made 69whp :bellyroll:
Anyways, I thought it was pretty neat.

I wouldn't advise installing these if it's your daily. For the most part they don't make any noise. It's when you start driving on rough roads that the NVH arises. Since the collars now limit left to right movement (canceling out Toyota's built in toe correction [your rear alignment should be spot on before installing these, or you'll be dog tracking]), you'll be hearing alot of popping/creaking from the torsion beam. It'll sound like your car is broken.

Track day prep.
Thank you OE front pads for your hard life of 15k miles and 5 track days. I ran them down to ~3mm.
I think the SE OE front pads did pretty well for track days. The only time I had any issue with brake fade was late braking the back straight at Streets of Willow.
I ordered Winmax W3 pads all around about 4 weeks ago, I was told that it would take 3 to 4 weeks as they are made to order, but I never received an update. I called the distributor, and the order either never made it to Winmax, or... it was never submitted. :iono: I have to wait another 3-4 weeks.
Back up plan, I ordered Akebono Proact Ceramic pads with Centric blank rotors. The Akebono's came with new hardware which was nice.
At the last track day, I'm guessing that I boiled the fluid because my pedal has felt mushy since. Flushing with fresh ATE stiffened up the pedal. I might have to go Motul if this happens again.
Big Willow is tomorrow and the forecast shows a cool 23C and sunny day!

Deng, those are the rotors in running with my hawk hps. They've held up great on 2 track days which was over 300km of lapping.
The hps pads are pretty good but they get pretty dusty after a hard track day and now even dd. It's a trade off for a better pad.
Yeah these rotors are great! I've been running them on my past track cars. When I first started doing track days way back when, I opted for slotted rotors, and those didn't last long. Ended up developing cracks. I stuck with blank rotors ever since.
Not many U.S. companies make performance pads for the SE which is a bummer.
I had a great time at Willow Spring's big track yesterday, even though it was only for 2 sessions lol.
The car felt great with the Cusco coilovers. With the engine/exhaust back to stock, the car was very quiet lol. I really need a 4.3 lsd soon. :)
Anywho here's me going off at ~98mph at T9.
https://youtu.be/QPAQvmTqxOY
I'm fine, and the car is fine. Thankfully, I only debeaded the front left tire. I'm surprised that there aren't any broken or bent parts on the Yaris, even the Kosei's were okay just scraped up. We inflated the tire, rotated it to the rear, and I called it a day. I survived T9, no need to keep pushing it. I got home safe and sound driving the speed limit.
ArmstrongRacing was out here with his co drivers too! It was good seeing him again. Last I talked to him he was putting down some fast times! :headbang:
Even though I had only 2 sessions, I was able to beat my PB of 1:49.559. I ran a 1:45.531. I'm pretty happy with the time, especially with a stock engine and full interior car.
Sorry for the wind noise, this was recorded on a gopro hero2 lol.

I figured I would have been in the 1:44s if I didn't lift on T9....but yeah, I should've lifted.

Sideways across the track, then into the dirt, you are lucky that did not roll. :(
Did you have data to pull your mph and lap times?
B Spec record is a 1:44.3, considering you are on street tires (I assume you still are) you were clicking off pretty good times.
That was the thought that kept running through my head, "don't roll, don't roll!" Looking back at the video, if only I managed to drive off straight it wouldn't have been so dramatic and I could've went straight into the pits. *facepalm*
I do have the data, and I'm trying figure out how to do the overlay. 9 min worth of data for a 30 sec clip, the software doesn't allow me to choose what part of the data to overlay. It needs all 9 minutes of video I'm guessing, then I trim from there.

Yeah, the safe way off is down pit road. You are one of the lucky ones that gets a second chance. ;)
Why is there like a 20mph difference between gps and obd speed in your data?
Haha pretty much why I packed up, cheered on my buddies, and left early for the day. It was such a nice day too.
I'm guessing it's because I instinctively went both feet in and ABS was activating during the slide, so the ECU sees a slower wheel speed than the velocity I was traveling. I think haha.

Geeze you are a lucky man. Gald you and the car are okay. Did you try throttling out of the over steer?
How do you decipher the lap data diagram on Harry's lap timer? That's the app I use but I haven't ever fully under stood the lap data image it gives you
Thanks man. I went both feet in on the clutch and brake pedal right when I started to spin.
I have a hard time looking at the data on my phone. Shoot, I'm still trying to figure out this software lol. Might be better to export the data and look at it on the PC using another software.

Deng is certainly a good driver with a well setup car, he is on RE71R tires.

oh.....oops lol
No worries, I wish I still had the re71rs. I killed them from not adjusting tire pressure, they were too high. :( the Star Specs were on sale, so I scooped them up.
And here's a picture that Caliphotography took.

Nice update man.
Glad to hear all is well for both you and the car after your off - pretty sure I'd need a fresh set of underoos after a spin that like at a nearly a buck sixty..! lol

Not much of an update.
Ever since owning the car, the driver's side rear toe has too much toe in, it's off in the .30* range while passenger side is around .15* I'm surprised the off at Big Willow didn't make it more out of spec.
Rear:
Toe
L \ R
.30 \ .15
Camber
L \ R
-.7 \ -.9
I'm experimenting with shims because the idea of using just washers doesn't sit well with me. At least with shims, there is more surface area for the hub assembly to make contact with the torsion beam assembly.
These shims are cut out of .25mm shim stock. There are 6 pictured in the attach photo, but I only used 2 of these shims, and that was enough to kick the toe out from .30* to -.09*. I'm only using one shim now. I might have to pick up some .1mm shim stock and stack again. I really need an alignment rack in my garage.

No need for a rack, just get a set of Smart Strings and a Smart Camber gauge, never visit the alignment shop again. *especially important for those after off-track excursion checks in the paddock.
I did a similar thing, just bought different gauge stainless and cut shims to set the toe to zero.

I've been debating about running 0 rear toe, but since it is my daily maybe a little toe in for highway stability. :iono:
Either way, the smart string would be a good investment when I'm playing with shims. I feel it's going to be a steep learning curve for me initially. I figure once the bars are dialed in to the vehicle, future set ups will be a breeze.

Zero in the rear is not an issue for street use - its more about reducing rolling resistance than changing the balance of the car.
Any time you use them on a new car for the first time it adds about 30 min just to dial in the bar setup, after that its easy. One of the best tools we ever bought.
Alright Jason, you talked me into running 0 toe all around, and I also ordered the smart strings lol. I have some stainless 0.05mm shim stock coming, so it's going to be like playing with razor blades!

I did the same thing, 0 rear toe, and "some" rear camber lol
Best use of an 18mm and 23mm socket.
Front and rear toe set to 0.

Let me know what you think of the smart string, I may be interested in it down the road
Highly recommend the smart strings, I pretty much used it enough times to pay for itself.
Well, using the Yaris for HPDE has come to an end for now.
I received my start date at my new job location in Michigan in August, so I'm going to be busy with relocation these next few months.
Anywho, daily cross country spec. I tried going for that new school old school mash up, I like it.

Tsurikawa subway handle from my old drift car. I threw it on for fun. I think it looks pretty cool, but I'm not low enough for it to touch the ground.
I'm going to remove my Cusco Coilovers this weekend and swap in the factory struts/shocks with the R*SR springs that I still have. It should be more comfy with a little rise in the ride height (sadly lol).

Looks sharp sad to see you move to Michigan but its gonna be better living out there. I cant wait to leave the coast myself.
Yeah, I'm excited to move. I've been in SoCal all my life, so I'm looking forward to MI. I see it as an opportunity to live somewhere new.
Plus, no smog! Yaris is going to be the beater daily while I get another rwd sedan and 1j swap, yes!

You sold it? Oh no! I'll be looking for your sale thread but it makes me sad.
Don't worry I'll still be around. I love the little 1NZ, but I'mma get something a little more my taste. I might have to pick up an Echo Sedan in CA and ship it MI. ;)
