If you can get a used one in good condition for a good price I would buy it.

New=more money.

Used=same quality but cheaper.

^^^ What NYC-SE said. Try to find a good used Yaris.

You would save the depreciation hit if you bought a used one with say 40,000 miles on it and I have to believe it will be just as reliable.

had it since 2012 which is more than 5 years ago...only drove 50,000km but drove in heavy heavy traffic of thailand...hours and hours of heavy traffic....still going...here are some services for last 5 years...
- had about 7 oil changes
- changed all 4 tires after 40,000km
- one of the lug broke off from the wheel, paid $10 to replace them
- changed the wind shield wiper twice
- change the spark plugs
- cleaned throttle body, became nasty after 30,000km+
- paints and rubber seals are wearing apart...(sad....)

I personally know two mechanics. One is a Toyota master mechanic. Both of them swear by the Yaris, calling it bullet proof. One of them goes as far as saying the engine is the best Toyota ever made. I had a 2004 1st gen, that ran with no problems to 240,00km (150,000 miles), until it got totalled in an accident. I replaced it with a 2006 2nd Gen model, which is heading towards the same mileage as the previous car, with only a rear wheel bearing change.
Bottom line, your daughter will be fine with a "pre-owned" Yaris.

Sent from my phone. Please excuse any typpos.

Buy a 2014 facelift or later it has lots of improvements from the 2012 prefacelift.
Especially the front seats and sound insulation is better.
And better feeling of the interior in general softer surfaces and not so sensible to scratches in the facelift.
I know because i have one prefacelift and one facelift.

Just Hit 18001, so 9.0001 Years old in human years. Mine is considered second hand despite having 100 miles on it and just sitting around the "dealer"

My 2012 Yaris L is at 77,500 US miles (124,724 KM) and has had absolutely no issue whatsoever. I only recently replaced the rear wiper blade ($10 US). I follow the standard US maintenance at the dealer as required every 5000 miles (8046 KM). This is an amazing car for reliability.

I got mine as a second car from the original owner. Along with Subaru's, one of the most reliable cars, I've ever owned (if not the most reliable). I come from owning an early TA (fun as hell, but an overall nightmare, lol), various GM's, a Turbo Mopar and a couple of Fords, then a Hyundai, (not bad), then on to Subaru (love them and super reliable too - border on unkillable).

What did you end up deciding/getting?
