How to secure a gas can to OUTSIDE of 3-door HB?

Planning on driving up into very remote parts of Wyoming this weekend to see the eclipse.

Not quite sure what the traffic will be like, and I am worried that I might get into a situation in which I could run out of gas.

Of course I'll top up often, but just in case -- I'd love to bring some extra gas.

With the 3-door HB there's not really a separate trunk compartment, so I'm not comfortable carrying full gas containers inside the car.

I can probably lash a couple of gas cans to the roof ... but has anyone ever come up with a more elegant solution for this admittedly rare issue?

I guess ratchet straps for securing 2 cans to the roof could work ...

Kill fuel mileage, wind noise, and look ridiculous. no great answer. a hitch receiver might allow framework for a metal jerry can(s) of some sort. On the front? Cars usually crash front first. On the rear? Distracted driver lights you both up at a stop light.
What I might do is NOT a suggestion or endorsement!--might carry good condition containers inside on the floor behind the front seats. maybe constrain. I've got a couple actual metal Jerry cans I've never used. But if using plastic, would want good quality.
Carry local fuel home in cabin for the lawnmowers, etc. Back in the gas ration days circa 1980, someone may have made a can that fit in the spare tire well?
Not great hazard carrying spare tire on exterior, or other place inside.

edit:behind, not below, the front seats. (I'm totally rear-seat deleted, including trays and covers...and no added floors.)

So you'll be 150 miles away from any gas station?I don't think the issue OP has is strictly proximity to gas stations but the impact of congestion. Apparently some of the prime viewing areas where the eclipse is total are to be receiving an influx of thousands upon thousands of seekers.

Except that is illegal as it obscures the license plate! :eyebulge:Meh. Maybe so but I've logged thousands of cross-country kms with that thing obscuring my plate. Never hassled even when I've had cops on my rear.

You shouldn't have any issue with can in good working order inside the car. If you're concerned about leaks get a brand new 5 gallon can. Put a baking sheet under it and strap it down. We just did a 500km trip with one inside a Sienna no issue or smell.
