Oil Drain bolt loosened on its own?

I always do my own oil changes. This time when I was about the change my oil, I found my drain bolt came off with no force. I used a larger 14mm gasket last time since it was all I had and it sealed, and I used to proper one this time. Luckily it didnt leak at all.

I never had one of these bolts loosen on there own. I tighten them pretty tight with a 3/8" ratchet. I think the bolt was a little deformed with taking it out in a vice last time. What could be the cause?

whatfer gasket material? I just did second oil change reusing found aluminum washer. Seemed tighter backing out than what I would have torqued to install it. No weeping or anything whatsoever...bottom of 140 k engine is bone dry.

I used a fiber gasket. This time I used aluminum. The old one stuck on so tight, I had to put in it a vice to get it out, and nicked the bolt a little on the side, but I still tightened it back on. I made sure they were torqued this time with the aluminum washer. I marked points to see if it will move.

Most likely expansion from heat.

I guess from now on I should use a small 1/2" to tighten it and my torque wrench

I've never had one come loose either and I'm 61 years old and been changing oil since I was 15. Got to be something like this. You change the washer and were used to the torque required to seat it. So you left it looser then it should have been.

I ended up getting a few drain plugs from the scrap, and used one and a new washer. Torqued it down. It actually happens sometimes with shops where the filter and bolt might be loose. These cars take 28ft/lbs which is alot. Many only take 15 or less with aluminum pans.

Off-topic a bit--my prior owner said his last oil change was at something like a Jiffy Lube. There was an orange rough-surface Fram filter and a wad of blue sealing wax spanning filter and motor. Is this common?
Also, oil draining struck me as having a slightly purple tint.

Fram oil filters are the worst to use generally. There synthetic ones are better, but Id stay away from them especially the ultra guard filters. Oil could've been royal purple or had a little UV dye in it for oil leaks. As for sealant, never seen anyone use it around a filter.

Wax is for telling Jiffy Lube if anyone has loosened the plug or filter, some people do that to ruin their worn out engine and get them to foot the bill for a new one.

Fram filters although crappy, can't be that bad. If their cardboard sides really does breakdown and run through your engine, they'd be in big trouble.
Their filtration need to meet or exceed manufacturers standard.
