How to disable the beep? (ASAP)

Hey all,

Whenever I put a large backpack in the front passenger seat, a seat belt warning light would come up; after a while, a very loud beep would go/come ON - suggesting that a car is in need of service. I think the car thinks of a large backpack as another passenger (who should be wearing a seatbelt), or maybe a small child (who's not supposed to be sitting in the front).

I'm moving to another city tomorrow and I will be putting lots in the front seat, so is there a way to disable that beep? Any helps will be really appreciated. Thanks in advance,

I had to put the passanger seat belt around a bag of bird food two days ago to keep it from beeping. Just click in the passenger seat belt and the sound stops and all will be well..

The quick fix is to run the seatbelt around the back of the seat and buckle it. I think I read somewhere you can have the dealer disable it for you if you want.

i think if you let the beeping goes for 30 seconds. It will actually stop beeping but the light will still flash.

The seats are equiped with sensors that detect how much the "person" weighs, how far back from the airbag they are, how fast you are going, etc... and would actually tighten the seatbelt for a fraction of a second before loosening a little to lessen the impact of the airbag in case of accident. Saftey feature of the yaris. I dont think thats a "service engine/car" signal its more of a "fasten your seatbelt" signal...

Talk to the dealer if you do not want that safety feature... they should be able to do something...

I started a thread about the same thing. You may have a hard time getting the dealer to disable it. They are reluctant because of liability issues. I know there is a way to do it, using the trip button reset meter and clicking, unclicking seat belts, but the chicken dance for other toyotas (i.e. corolla, camry, etc.) doesn't seem to work in the 2007 yaris. I've tried it a billion times. If the dealer tells you how to do it PLEASE POST IT! The only other idea i've had is that the odometer computer manipulation doesn't become active until after you have driven 8000 km and have had to reset the service reminder light. (just an idea) Anyways, good luck and keep us informed. I too am tired of having to keep the passenger seat buckled up, a real pain in the ass. Other than that, I love my Yaris!!!

yep the dealer can shut of the buzzer with his scan tool.

I really read everybodys post but the BEAPING WILL STOP AFTER LIKE 30 TO 60 SECONDS just so you no also it easy just unplug the weight sensor:eek: :rolleyes:

Yeah i heard about that when I made another post sometime ago. It's regarding I put my watermellon up front and some suggest I should put seatbelt for my watermellon. Where in exactly location is the weight sensors under the seat?

umm isn't there like 5 sensors, and unhooking them will throw an srs airbag light and code...

I beleive that is correct. Im not sure where they are located tho... some i would assume would be inside the seat while some might be attached to other electronic packages such as the speedometer... depending on which sensor it is.

Why not put the bag on the floor area? or belt up the bag if it's on the seat. Nothing worse than the bag flying onto the floor when you do a sudden stop.

Just curious but why have the weight system disabled or removed just for cargo? Doesnt that imply that if disabled your passenger airbag will not go off? Sucks to be your passenger if thats the case.

This has been a remedy among many of Toyota's newer vehicles (Matrix, Corolla, Lexus IS, etc.) It may or may not work on the new Yaris:

1. Turn key to on position, but do not start the car.
2. Make sure the odometer is displayed and not Trip A or Trip B.
3. Turn key to off position.
4. Turn key to on position.
5. Quickly press AND hold the odometer button down for 30 seconds after step 4.
6. While still holding the odometer button, buckle up and then unbuckle.
7. Odometer display will change to "b ON".
8. Let go of odometer button, and it will change to "b OFF"
9. Wait for odometer display to return back to normal.

Enjoy!

I tried the methods suggested by foober & Basscat. They kind of worked. There is no more beep, just the passenger airbag OFF light showed up instead.
