i have heard several things about k&n filters not being very good. they apparently get great airflow but they get that great airflow because of the filter holes being too big causing horrible filtration which is the main object to a filter. is this true? if so which brand do u recommend. thanx for the help.

I've never heard anything bad about k&N, to me - on such a low horsepower car i wasnt searching around for an intake that picked up one or two "alleged" horsepower compared to another. But you'll hear different opinions from different people. I'm sure it will be a matter of moments before someone posts a reply for you to wait for the intake a board member is making..which you can follow the progress of yourself a few posts down in the performance forum...good luck

They are better than stock, but probably not the best available. I've had good luck with them.

Slik, I've read that same thing in some motorcycle forums... customers discovering a layer of dirt inside the intake that had made its way past the filter.

I have a K&N on my Vibe, but I've never pulled everything apart to see for myself. I put it on not long after purchase, and have never had any engine-related problems in the now 125k miles. You're supposed to replace them at some point, but I just keep cleaning and re-oiling. I'm 'bout ready to sell anyway, so I'm not worried about it.

I used K&N's (single filters on each carb) on my motorcycles years ago. There overall quality started to go down hill and I stopped. I believe that they started to sub they product out which caused the problem. To be honest I have not tried any of there new stuff, but it shore doesn't look as well constructed as the stuff I was using back in the day.

I have used K&N filters in ALL of my cars over the past 15 years with no problems at all. Just be vigilant with your cleaning. I usually clean mine twice per year depending on how dirty the filter is.

I think that the AEM is the best.In my opinion K&N allows more dust in the engine.

I think when cleaned and properly oiled they work well... although the K&N intake on my 2000 Nissan Frontier actually LOST power... the Neuspeed on my Jetta GLi used a K&N filter, that always fell off (nice feature) and on my motorcycles they always seemed to do the trick.

I like the foam/oil dirtbike style filters.

i've heard that they don't do crap (the drop in ones), and what was previously mentioned (about the dirt).

I got my shipment today and dropped it in. I had to wipe the excess oil off of it first, there was more than enough on there. I'm wondering if someone at the plant thought it might dry out on it's way to wherever. I'm not sure if it's all in my head or not but it does seem to have a slight (ever so slight) improvement in throttle response, and HP. As for the dirt, etc getting in there, we'll see how it does when it comes time to check it.

Where do you get this opinion from? I am just curious if you've taken apart an engine that once used a K&N filter or did some testing. Are you getting your opinion from what you've read on the internet or heard whilst passing by someone at an autoshow?

You do realize AEM uses K&N Filters correct?

alot of foam/fabric air filters DO allow dust and grime into the engine...pull your intake off and look at the throttlebody after 10k miles...

Um.... You do realize that AEM are not oiled while K&Ns are, thus the term Dryflow?

yes...good ol fashioned paper. some foam filters are ok, most are not though because while they offer excellent air flow the material isnt as dense so more particles get through. most mechanics i have talked to and myself are in agreement that while you will notice improved hp and sound with such an air filter, it can be harmfull to your engine.

like i said, drive 10k miles and pull the intake off. if the butterfly on the trottlebody has grime on it switch air filters.

most of that grime is for other reasons. having a paper filter won't stop carbon build-up on the throttle body. almost all the technician's i know run k&n type filters and i have put over 90k on a vehicle without an issue. you do know how small the amount of particles are correct? (i have even seen foam filters implode pc by pc into the motor)for that 10k most of the grime caused is by the oil from the filter sitting on the butterfly...but you could easily run a dryflow.

I think there is a liquid that cleans it up.
