Hello all,

My husband is out in our garage right now attempting to do an engine swap on our 2007 Yaris Hatchback. He is having trouble getting the motor to separate from the transmission so that he can pull the old motor out of the car. Any tips? He is aware that he could pull both, but is trying to avoid that if at all possible due to space constraints (this was an unexpected but necessary swap. This is our only car, and he is trying desperately to get this done as quickly as possible). Thank you.

Make sure he has 9 bell housing bolts removed before trying to detatch the engine. 9 bolts total, including the 2 starter bolts.

Assuming those are removed you can use a pry bar on a few points around the bell housing. Toyota leaves some extra metal in certain areas to aid in this.

Where ever you can fit a pry bar start with small movement in various areas and eventually it will separate.

EDIT* I don't actually know if you can leave the trans mounted in the engine bay and remove the engine. You may not have the clearance on the right side crash bar to clear the input shaft from the transmission.

Easiest way is to pull both or other option is to drop the trans and pull engine and then re attach trans to new engine. This will likely end up taking more time than pulling them both. Engine is 200lbs and trans is 100lbs so with a hoist it can easily be done.

And if it is an automatic, don't forget the 6 flex plate bolts behind the little black access cover underneath
