I found a great deal on an Android 6.0 factory fit head unit. This will be the 5th one of these factory fit Android units I've bought and installed in my own various vehicles.

I'm currently online shopping for a 4-channel amp (maybe a Clarion xc1410 as I've owned two and they are an excellent budget Class D amp), four 2 or 3-way speakers (probably NVX as I've found them to be a great balance between cost and quality), tweeters and a powered subtube (I really like the MTX 8" tube and have one installed in our van. I may see what 6" powered subs are available due to space constraints.

I'll be doing my own install.

No, unfortunately not. I hadn't thought about it as I normally use the units for music (PowerAmp app), Torque Pro and other apps. Your post did pique my interest though. I've been doing a little searching for universal HD Radio hardware. :)

Yeah, ya gotta love them. So much versitility. My first one - for my 4th gen Dodge Grand Caravan - was WinCE 5.0. It was totally lame compared to the Android units. Other than the Caravan unit, all of the others have been the standard 6.2" screen. The unit I just bought is 6.95". I think the difference will be noticeable.

I'm about to move on the 4-channel amp and speakers. Also, comparing the Kenwood and Pioneer micro subwoofer units for under the driver's seat. I can't spare any room in the hatch. We just arrived for a hockey tournament and between my son's gear, a couple travel bags and my laptop bag, the Yaris was filled to the ceiling.

Where did you buy it?

I'm a little skeptical about sound quality of these Android devices.
I was going to get one Joying brand, which seems to be quite popular.

I picked it up from Aliexpress - the same place I bought my others. I can provide a direct link if you'd like one. I always run PowerAmp on my android devices. It improves the sound considerably, especially with the multiband EQ. The system in my van sounds amazing with relatively inexpensive speakers (11 of them including MTX 8" powered sub tube) and 4-channel amp. But, yes, out of the box, these head units have just so-so sound.

PowerAmp app http://powerampapp.com/

One disclaimer...

If one of these units fail, they are basically throw away item unless you're electronics-savvy or a willing to find an electronics repair shop willing to take a repair on. The return shipping to China would be cost prohibitive. That said, I have only had one unit fail. It was the touch screen. I still have the unit in my closet and the replacement screen - which is connected with plugs only - is about $40.00. At some point, I'll repair it and have it as a back-up unit for my Sedona. It's a Kia factory fit.

Yes please, do post a link:)

Im trying to find a cheap unit with at least 2GB of RAM though. We're switching to DAB in Greece and my Sony CDX-MP80 doesn't support it, and DAB adapters cost around the same as a headunit.

Here is the link to the one I bought. I got my DHL tracking number yesterday. Since I bought mine the price has gone up from $207 CAD to $255 CAD.

However, while waiting for my tracking number, I discovered another unit that I would actually prefer, and it's less expensive. I has no DVD which would make more sense for me as I don't used DVDs but rather MicroSD cards. Also, this unit has DAB+.

DISCLAIMER: I make no assurances that these units are direct plug and play, but I suspect that they are.

That's a nice looking head unit. The prices on the units I linked are in Canadian $. I got lucky and paid $207.00 CAD before it went to $255.00. The one I bought does have DVD. I was wrong about the 2nd one I linked having DAB+. You actually have to buy a DAB+ unit to connect to the head unit.

Makes sense. There probably is some variation in quality but I have always gone for the cheapest factory fit radio with the features I'm looking for. I think warranty is a moot point as return shipping cost on any of these radios is probably more than buying a new one.

Since I'm on a budget, I opted for some more entry level gear but I have experience will all of the products with the one exclusion of the subwoofer. The reviews on the subwoofer were both numerous and overwhelmingly positive.

Disclaimer: Although I posted some pictures from Sonic Electronix (they have the best pics), I have no affiliation with the company other being an occasional customer.

Subwoofer (Kenwood KSC-SW11) Shopped around and found this for ~ $118.00 USD shipped on Amazon. Planning to mount under driver's seat.

6.5" Speakers (Boss PC65.4) I used the 5 1/4" variant in my Dodge van and these speakers exceeded expectations. Plus, they should be well matched with the amp I bought. I ordered 2 pairs of these at Walmart for ~$56.00.

4 Channel Class D miniamp (Dual DA704). I used one of the older series Dual amps in my Dodge van. The sound quality was great and the unit seemed really well made. I think these are made in the USA (Correction: Made in Korea). I picked up this amp with a "free" 4-channel 8 gauge wiring kit (Belva BAK84) for ~$90.00 US. Planning to mount under driver's seat, or under dash.

Tweeters (NVX VSPTW 1" silk dome) for ~$26.00. I have 2 sets of these in my van and they are by far the best low priced tweeter I've used. They are remarkably clean sounding, quite loud when called on to be so, but not at all harsh. Planning to mount at top of A-pillars.

I think these components will provide great quality sound. I will again be using PowerAmp digital processing music player on my Android head unit, so that, along with the filters and gains on the dual amp, I should be able to dial it in quite nicely.

Ended up going with the NVX QBus8v.2 underseat subwoofer. It got quite a few positive ratings. The version 1 of this model was also sold under Focal as the iBus20, only at about 4 times the price...

Hi. Yes I did receive the head unit but won't be able to answer your questions accurately as I likely won't be installing it until late May. Every manufacturer-specific unit I have bought has been plug-and-play. Boot up times may specified in the sometimes lengthy product listings. Cold boot up times are often in the order of 15 - 20 seconds but that would depend, I suppose, on how many apps you have set to start at boot up. The last unit I bought, before this one, had auto start up when the ignition was turned on. I did not like this feature but it was hard-coded into the machine and could not be changed. The seller explained that it is like "most new cars" in which the radios come on as soon as the vehicle is started. You could turn the radio off and it would stay off and then you could turn it on again, but I still didn't really like auto startup feature.

I take it you are considering getting one of these? If you are and you don't use CDs or DVDs there are ones that do not have the DVD drive. I have my new Toyota head unit up for sale locally right now as I was unaware of the ones without DVD. These units are much more shallow - a lot like a tablet - and if I manage to sell my new one, I'll be ordering one without DVD.

If you go this route and have any questions, I would be happy to help out, if I can.

I decided to sell off my Boss PC65.4 speakers locally and I ordered 2 sets of Rockford Fosgate R163 x 3 speakers. This is what happens - at least to me - if I order gear well in advance of installing it. I couldn't resist the Rockford Fosgates as I got a package deal of two sets for under $60.00 USD.

I did sell the Boss speakers for my cost.

Here are the new speakers that will go in instead of the Boss ones.

I bought and will put this NVX QBus8v.2 Class D amp/8" sunwoofer under the passenger seat of the Yaris. This is one sturdy, heavy unit I have unboxed and am super impressed with the seeming build quality. It won't rattle the rearview mirror but should round out the lower end nicely. This unit came with a surprisingly good quality wiring kit.

You're welcome.

I did not search for any 2G units without the DVD so can't say for sure that they exist. I have found 1G of onboard Ram more than adequate. I would appreciate maybe 32G ROM as opposed to the 16G that most come with. Occasionally, I do have to free up some space, but that said, I have not directed any apps to SD card. I only keep music on that.

I just search aliexpress for "Toyota Android" or similar search term.

Best of luck and please post a link of any/all the units that you are considering.

Cheers,

Adam

Is the sim card inserted into the head unit, or do you use an adapter with a sim card?

There's an adapter which was included and I just reached around and put it in the glove box. Also did that with the USB extension.
The headunit has 4 USB slots + 1 in the front, and it also takes 2 microSD cards in the front. In the last pic you can see the stock launcher. I immediately downloaded and bought the full version (just $/€1!!) of "Car Launcher AG" which you'll see in most of the pics, with integrated GPS speed, music player, and a clock, but you can also just have it display the car logo. You can also buy a DVB-T2 usb adapter for Android and you'll have TV as well. I tried using an external USB DVD drive but nothing, didn't work. I have practically infinite data on the SIM I used so you can see me watching Rick&Morty on the internet, and also Greek TV.
I took lots of pics, here you go: Toyota Android Headunit from GearBest (https://imgur.com/a/qpbhXOM)

I've been pretty lucky myself, but - at least where I buy them from - if one broke, it would basically be a throwaway item. I've found a few of these radios in the $175.00 CAD range and they are full Android with amazing functionality. I basically buy them without any intention of ever fixing them if they break. I would just replace. Not very environmentally friendly, I know but realistic, I think. I do have one radio - of about 5 I've bought over the years - that had a screen go bad. The thing is, it is an android 4.4. By the time I fixed it (replace screen for about $40.00) the OS would be outdated anyway and updating the OS is involved from what I hear. And that's not even considering 'outdated' hardware. In sum, you're assuming a degree of risk when you buy one of these. They are far cheaper than western offerings and they are both factory fit and essentially plug-and-play. The same cannot be said for local offerings as far as I know. I don't think they offer the latest technology that would come in say a Kenwood or Apline, but they are vastly cheaper and stable from my experience. Many people will roll with the associated risk. Others won't and I couldn't blame either.

I only bought from ebay... Rarely amazon, but when GearBest opened... If I see something on ebay I like, I always try to get it from GearBest. Even if it's a bit more expensive, I feel really assured when buying from them and I expect the items in 2 weeks time with free shipping from China! Not even their EU warehouses! Basically if I wanna buy from China they're my only choice. You don't have to deal with scammy sellers anymore and you always know you'll get your item. I've also bought my past 2 phones from gearbest. Not a single problem. What I like best though is to throw my money away buying little weird and useless gadgets :p that's my hobby hahah

No, I haven't but will take a look.

I couldn't open your link but the model number is the same in the link I posted. It's a nice radio for sure. One question: does it have RGB adjustable color button lights. I like to match the dash lighting color to make it look more factory. It seems this feature is getting harder to come by. At least the cheaper units don't have it.

Yes it does! Although I didn't like the white, doesnt look white, a bit more greenish/blue
That's because of the rgb leds, they don't have 3 individual smds, but rather one RGB chip.

Neat. One of my older units had lighting presets, but you could use the color pallet adjustment. My kia had an orangy colored lighting which I managed to match perfectly.

On-screen nav and the other apps is super cool. I wouldn't mind having an Android Auto unit.

I really do like these factory fit android radios. Not sure how the os in these differ from Android Auto, or if they're very similar.

Android auto is just a phone mirroring service. Android headunits are a full mobile OS within a headunit. basically a mini android PC for your car. much more flexiable, much less expensive and can even get tv.

Despite the nomenclature, my intention was to say, it's awesome to have Android on your head unit.

It is awesome indeed! One thing I think I am not going to like about my head unit is the volume control. It's right in the touch screen. I think I'd prefer a knob for volume control.

That's interesting. My touchscreen has a manual volume button, mute button and one or two other hard buttons along the left side. Like you, I like them.

Yeah, all of my other Android head units have buttons. I guess this was an attempt to maximize screen size. My other units are 6.2", whereas this is 7". That said, I don't know of the actual viewing area is really any larger.

I just installed the ATOTO A6 and it is by far the best budget android head unit I've worked with. Price is VERY reasonable and the accessories are good like the dash cam. Just a usb plug and play and is run by a nice app on the console.

Best thing about the ATOTO was that it has a "2 second" on

Just looked at it on Amazon. Looks like a nice unit. You need a bezel for that unit, correct? My attraction to many of the android units is their factory fit feature. My boot up time is considerably more than 2 seconds - maybe in the order of 15 seconds. My new unit also starts with ignition on and I'm getting used to that.

Enjoy your new head unit. They are awesome!

I didn't need to buy a dash kit because my stereo wasn't an integrated one. I used the stock bezel panel and the stereo almost fits. There are two gaps on each side but there are filler pieces available on ebay. I bought a filler piece kit for $2 which is fair considering they are just plastic.

I have it installed now without the filler pieces and you can see right into the dash on each gap but everything works fine till the parts come in the mail.

Also the MAIN reason I bought the ATOTO was the "2 second" on instead waiting for it to boot up. It is almost an instant on IMO. The 2nd reason I bought the ATOTO is the dash cam integrates very well via a USB specific to the head unit and is specifically designed to work together.

Overall the reviews were very good. I picked up the cheapest unit which was about $240 canadian, dash cam was about $30 and back up camera was generic so all in less then $300.

That is a good deal considering my mini van has a separate dash cam, separate rear-view reverse cam, and then I was using dongles for blue tooth to the stock radio. Non of which worked very well independently. All those bits and pieces added up to about less then $100 but then I didn't have Google maps/GPS and a simple way of paying media.

Yeah, the reviews are very positive. I also noted that your onboard memory is 2G RAM and 32G ROM. That's a nice feature! I love these android radios and I've had them in several of my last vehicles. I celebrated the day I could put gigs of songs on a tiny microSd card and just plug it in and play. Are you familiar with PowerAmp? If not, maybe check it out. Among other great features, it really gives the sound quality a significant boost.

I bought the cheaper 1gig ram 16gb storage and haven't really had a problem with it running fast enough for all my needs. The music and bluetooh integration is great.

The only thing I should have thought about was getting the model with the physical buttons instead of the soft buttons. The softbuttons look better but physical buttons are better for using it without having to look.

I'm thinking of putting little nubs or something near the soft buttons so I can find them without looking at them when driving.

Their is a deluxe (pro) model comes with a toyota harness (for wiring) built in AND has gesture controls. as well as the 2gb ram and 32 gig hard drive. THinking back it was only an extra 60 bucks more and might have been worth it'

Hmmm, I like that idea. You're totally right about the driving distraction associated with the soft buttons. Do you think that nubs would interfere with the capacitive screen? If not, I may give that a try. Let me know if you do it, what you used and if it works. Since I have no steering wheel controls, I'm thinking about getting this and mounting the pads on the back of the steering wheel:
