Gents!
I thought I would add a Build log and page for the ongoing process with my 09 Yaris Hatch. I'll be posting random questions up here, and updates on progress as it happens (At least if I say it'll happen that's more motivation to make it happen right?)
About the Driver.
27 year old from the midwest farmlands who ended up traveling the US with the Services, My experience with cars started at a young age where my father taught me to drive on an 82 rx7 and my first real manual car was a 92 Protege, the same car by the by which was used to teach 4 other cousins and my sister. RIP Little Protege.
Since striking it on my own I've owned over 20 cars, I'm sure I'll post a list of vehicles when I feel somber enough to remember them all. But they range from old-school steel to trucks, European sedans, and your normal JDM trash.
My Current Lineup is a humble 2006 Saab 97x Arc/5.3i which I nicknamed the Rhino because it's like a unicorn only.. portly
and the 09 Yaris which is currently unnamed...
Previously I owned my actual dream car and the biggest jimmy rustler of all time a 2010 Aurora Blue Mazda RX8 R3 edition. I will always love that car but I was just not keen on racing it. More on that later.
My overall goal for this Yaris is to delve into the world of cheap and effective racing and track days to bolster my own abilities and skills and just because I want it. This Yaris already came with the stripped interior, 4 point cage, a handful of suspension braking and tire modifications and the gauges. Effectively I believe I bought a 500 dollar car that had about 4,000 dollars of modifications and work done on it.
Without Further Ado:
2009 Toyota Yaris
82k miles
Federal RS-RR tires
15 inch Kosei K1 TS rims
5 full size spare
Roll cage ( still working on paperwork to get it certified)
Crow Racing Harnesses
Defi Tachometer
Glowsport Oil Pressure and Coolant temp gauges
Micro Image Shift Extender
Micro Image SSK underhood and inner body
Weathertech Wind Deflectors
Cusco front and rear swaybars
Tien Street Master Z coilovers
Poly Bushings up front
Chopped (MCM) Exhaust/catback
Hawk HPS pads
Cryotech Rotors
Goodridge Stainless steel front lines
OMP racing pedals
Soon:
Tanabe Touring Catback
NRG Racing seat
NRG Deep dish wheel
NRG Hub adapter
NRG Hub Lock
Lathewerkes custom knob
Hydro-handbrake
Camry Front Calipers (once pads get worn... might take a while)
Upgrade front rotors
Custom Front and Rear aero
Livery...
Bluetooth Radio install
Bee*R rev limiter (Had this for years and years...)
Bee*R Shift Lamp (same, I think this was from my 3rd? 240sx?)
DC Sports exhaust header
1ZZ throttle body with custom ported intake manifold (working out how...)
AEM EMS 4
Radium AOS
A/C Delete
Rally Style Hood Scoop
Stiffer Springs...
The overall goal while seemingly expensive is to build a reliable and cheap track ready car, that has some 'resident f*ckboi' status stuff for kicks. I've already put about 500 miles behind the wheel and am aching for more wheel time and get some hours on the track to really push it. Working out suspension rates right now and alignment. As well as losing weight personally.
Even with the list of modifications included I feel this chassis is one of the cheapest "new" chassis to build and race. Sure Miata this and blah, in the words of Trump, "sounds good doesn't work" (I'm 6 foot 4 and hate having my knees touch the dash.... I'm More leg than torso) So this is next best.
Reasons for Yaris vs other B segmented cars? This one already came modified. I also like the junkyard ability to swap in other parts lego style...The mazda/chevy cannot do that and the honda... well first gen Fit's are rather leaky ey?

First nice Yaris. Best of luck with your endeavors with her. Love how the tach is mounted in the vent.
Second, 27 years old and been thru 20 cars already. My God man! That's like 2 cars a year assuming you started driving at 17. Do you have any money left over for food? I've been driving since 1985, I've had 4 cars total in that time including my current Yaris.

Love that second Forza livery, with the Shell logo on the front bumper.
The 1996 Nissan 240 was a gem and I like the 2nd Gen RX-7 even more.
Rally driving in that BRZ had to be a riot. :burnrubber:

No, I eat ramen alot..
in truth, it just takes careful budgeting and meager living. I don't have the nicest newest clothes, I don't buy hyper jee whiz phones or spend money on video games or tv streaming sites, I hardly go on vacation (racing is the vacation) And I do a lot of work when flipping cars making sure I break even or even make money. the rx8 I actually made money through street value went down the low mileage and rare model helped drive the price back up.
also Illinios farm boy Ive been driving since 15, dads crown vic (then mine) was my first car, it went back to my dad who handed it to my sister who gave it back and sadly was sold for cheap. I wanted it (hence the grand marquis) but physically the car had alot of years on it and rust was an issue.

We are tweaking that livery a little to make it a reality. I like it alot alot.
that FC was nice. it was a non turbo GXL but had all the right bits and ran really well. I kinda regret selling it but at the time it was a 3rd car and well... selling that and the 240 gave way for me buying a nicer daily.
That Brz was the greatest thing I sat behind. stock power rating but the suspension and lsd just made it carve. I still look at brz's to this day but... ill wait till they bottom out price wise ;)

To be an audiophile.
Or so I thought. I had a genius idea of installing a bluetooth head unit in the upper glove box on these cars because frankly its too small for anything too useful and my oem head unit was already converted into a gauge pod. More on that later
So I went about the barbaric way of finding a good mounting solution and location and did a little chopping (MCM) in the process.

I want to say cool but I just can't. No way I would sacrifice an airbag for a radio. I know 2 people whose lives have been saved by an airbag. I know 0 people whose lives were saved by a radio.

When dealing with rollcages and harnesses and fixed back seats; airbags become a liability as they where designed for collapsible seats. There's no point in this car. But yes in a normal street driven car it is boarderline illegal to take out airbags and putting yourself and passengers at risk.
Continuing on!
With the radio mounted in the dash and looking super stealth we went to wire in the connection, small problem
Im missing entirely everything radio harness wise down to the speakers. I have nothing, no speakers, no plugs, no harnesses...
Well crud.
So I'm at a bridge here, do I replace the speakers in the doors and wire them up with my own concoction to the head unit? Or since we have some brand new kenwood 4 inch speakers do I put them in those useless cubbys next to the hvac controls and just ignore my doors? This wasnt supposed to be big like this, but Im all for saving the hassle of wiring to doors.... as the speakers where the only electronic bit
https://s9.postimg.org/gyloyzisb/orca-image-1520917102271.jpg_1520917102554.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/gyloyzisb/)

that said I started working on a side project while the dash is out (actually theres alot of cascading things Im working on that the dash it out)
You Can see the radio bezel has been retained with just a piece of black posterboard and 2 gages, functional and proper but we can do better.
https://s9.postimg.org/ogm052hm3/0312181403.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/ogm052hm3/)
4 better in fact
https://s9.postimg.org/p64shnfnf/0312181947a.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/p64shnfnf/)
The order was sent in for a water temp gauge and Afr, also from the same line of glowshift gauges, they arent super awesome but they are cheap and will work for now. The upper right hand section will be left blank for now. .
https://s9.postimg.org/wm423gb2j/0312182013.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/wm423gb2j/)
The idea later is when I go full aftermarket ECU I can send trigger warning lights to small Diodes there and lablel them for a quick look on what the CEL actually is. Im thinking oil pres low, water temp high, acc power on, and alt discharge go/no go
just a thought
As I am at a standtil till those gauges come in Im gonna roll along to the next dash based project....
here's a teaser

Sorry for the Delay! to the three of you who follow this ( thanks grandma!)
the radio bezel took me way longer than I care to remember, but basically the gauges are 52mm which is just a hair bigger than a standard 2 inch hole saw, so i got the 2 inch hole saw and completely forgot to measure the lip on the face of the gauge and basically ruined 3 pieces of Lexan for the gauge mount... Im not the kind of guy to but another piece when I have so much poster board, so what did I do? @sswhacks of bondo and sanding..
this here is the final product cause I was also working on something else that took up my camera.
https://s9.postimg.org/3wc5x25h7/0316182014.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/3wc5x25h7/)
bit of black paint. some duct tape on the back and now i just wait for the next set of gauges. looks good and I like that its evenly spaced left to right....
took me so long to get that right
\
Now for the teaser.
I finagled with a driver side mounted tach and played with cardboard.

but I messed up with the wrinkle coat, the rustoleum dries super oily and i was man handling it to get the car back together for the weekend autox...
i hate how it turned out but its functional and right now the car is back on the road..

left a little note of encouragement!
spare carbon fiber bits are always aplentiful here at the shop
moving onto the radio issue.
This car had no headunit, nor did it have the speakers.... nor any sort of wiring for speakers.
Im all about basic so i had some spare 4 inch speackers laying around.. and a 4 inch hole saw...

yup ... that just happened
https://s9.postimg.org/rnbjf1nmz/0316181109.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/rnbjf1nmz/)
painted the styrofoam, and installed it all, shimmed out to clear the hvac controls which are unneccesarily huge.
now I have a head unit in the glove box, bluetooth, and trick speakers
https://s9.postimg.org/5bdqlryuj/0316182053.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/5bdqlryuj/)
Im really content with how things turned out.
I have a different idea in mind for the dash but as the car sits right now I can drive it and enjoy, wiring up the rev lamp was interesting too since it works off the redline set and only has indication from 2000 to redline, so the first light comes on at like 4500 rpm... But it was free and I had it lying around.
Also came in while i was working, the best worst mod for this car
https://s9.postimg.org/h0hq9nxi3/0316181419.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/h0hq9nxi3/)
the oem arm rest. Its awesome! cause I have a place for my arm now as Im driving.
its the worst cause it gets in the way of the hand brake, and its rather intrusive on pure shifting..
https://s9.postimg.org/8uzobkeez/0316181429b.jpg (https://postimg.org/image/8uzobkeez/)
thankfully its one screw to pop off the uppser section making it 2 min to get back to full range of arm movement.
Later this week Im going ot bring the car back into the garage and start working on the mirco image short shift kit under hood and inner body. if anyone has tricks or tips on how to assess all that Id be super grateful.
Next on the list of things to get done is finalizing the stripping of the carpet out of the car, adding some lining to the flooring, maybe taking down the doors to the shell and making an alum cover for it all with pull tabs, the engine and power mods are on hold as I finalize money for the 2zr swap. Which I am super amped about getting into. been looking for a scion xd car to buy whole and just murderlate.
I also want to take out the dash once more and flock it but before I do that I have plans on changing up the drivers cluster once more to something a little more streamlined and less ratchet. Im thinking of fiberglassing the section smooth with the rest of the dash and having a flat plate that pulls away on velcro to mount the gauges to. makes the whole look cleaner and its easier to modify later on. But for right now the car is good and I still love wringing out all 106hp its supposed to have.

Sorry for lack of posting, went to Tenn to help my parents move into their new place, ended up getting pneumonia! of all things, and almost died
(thank the good lawd for strong immune systems, mom's home cooking and sleep.... sweet 6 lbs 7 ounce baby jesus-sleep..)
Anways! while I was gone!
New Swag for the unnamed nugged. NRG not FIA rated, this is more to get me into a good seat see what i like with fitment, and blah blah for 160 bucks its a cheap way to get into the aftermarket seat world, and I can really check fitment with my head, and butt and whatnot

https://thumb.ibb.co/bXRUcS/0412181240_HDR.jpg (https://ibb.co/bXRUcS)
So on that note, literally a 3-4 inch drop on seating position, my shorter roomates cannot see over the dash now.. it feels weird to me for now but Im sure Ill get used to it. And yes my butt fits well. Its actually... almost too big, Im losing weight this year and right now I fill it well but... i's getting smaller.
https://thumb.ibb.co/ns2PBn/0412181240a.jpg (https://ibb.co/ns2PBn)
Position is good the angle on the belts was another concern since Im also tall in the butt to shoulders section (literally theres only like one thing small on me)

Quality stuff, and yes they make a direct bolt in affair for the Yaris!

Wheel isnt exactly centered but it's weird, it falls between two of the splines, so for now I have it close enough, and really it doesnt matter so much. I have a quick release lock for it but no quick release but im contemplating if i need it or not. the wheel sits so much closer that the wheel doesnt inferear with my knees, and i can even drop the wheel down which is way nice. never had to do that before.

My Roomate's Nugget as well, the Mazda 2, he just put the tires and suspension on, more of a daily status compared to my track rat status, but since we are both stock engines, itll be fun to fling them both around. The driver interface with the 2 is so much better than the yaris, but for me the yaris sits better more headroom and i prefer the shifter location even if the shifter length is stupid long.. the mazda 2 shifter is in the console and way forward.

Man, glad to hear you got well. Pneumonia is no joke.
Interested in your seat mod. I want to get new seats for mine and was going back and forth between NRG and Sparco. As you pointed out, NRG is the more cost effective route, but I've heard things about NRG quality. I won't be taking my car to the track, but I also don't want the seat compromising me in an accident.

Well, my thoughts are as such
1) don't get into an accident #ferrarianswer
2) NRG makes good cheap stuff that has markedly gone up in quality as the years go by, other seats I would look into are Corbeau and Cobra, price marketed goes up with perceived quality
3) NRG makes a cheap bucket style fiberglass shell, similar to other "cheap designs" sparco uses a tube frame and it feels way different.
4) if you arent doing FIA regulated stuff then it would be fine assuming you have the rollbar/cage to go along with it.
5) I chose NRG for a few reasons, one it was a cheap seat to test fit my butt, the local shop was able to get it to me for stupid cheap, and if it breaks can buy something else, if it doesnt it worked ( sun fade is real though)
6) I already had the cage, crow harnesses so the stock seat and airbag became a harzard.

Why thank you! My roomate called us even after today's go kart race. Hes a little more aggressive than I am, which can go two ways. faster initial lap times, but more likely to hit cones and stuff (in pro solo)
I've decided to nix the 2zr swap idea for now, I am converting my car back down to STS spec so I spent the rest of this week in the junkyard pulling plastic pieces and the headliner, now gets to the fun part of trimming it all for the rollbars I have installed.
Also along with me keeping the 1nz for now ( I will keep saying that) I am going to move ahead with an aftermarket header, cat section and axle back (I'm thinking 2 inch all the way through)
For now the next list of to do's involve reinstalling the interior, stripping down the rear seat to just the shell ( rules dont state the rear seats have to maintain function..) and moving the battery to passenger rear in It's own box, and then installing a coolant temp gauge and A/F Ratio gauge
Things on Order:
Air Dragon pressurizer for track days
magnetic numbers in a swanky custom livery!
Two new front tires....
I would also want to try my hand at getting some Ultra Racing braces as the rules state I can mess with some subframe connnectors.
Cheers yall!
Bonus content.... My redskin went brown to flaking white chips. Apparently, I tan out stupid fast and didnt moisturize enough.. oh well. New skin will get all the sun again

Well mates, this is why you wash yourself and your hands many times after trips from the junkyard.. I got sick again. I think it was a 1-2 combo of late nights, cool weather, sleeping cold, being in the junkyard, and in general stress ( took and passed a huge test earlier this week)
BUT as a result two days before Sunday's prosolo championship My car is back down to STS class... aka
Stock-Enough
https://preview.ibb.co/gWqheS/0501181518.jpg (https://ibb.co/bETDm7)
And Check the new tires! woot. I need to get them mounted tomorrow...
LKQ down the road has a totaled front end impacted 08 Yaris, It was a higher trim level which would cause some headaches such as the split folding rear seats, but for the price I Yanked all I could..
Everything I put in got weighed and I had to cut stuff to make it fit around the cage. Will people bawk? only if Im actually competative ( I wont be)
https://preview.ibb.co/ixQb67/0502181624.jpg (https://ibb.co/hRYkzS)
https://preview.ibb.co/eJyw67/0502181515.jpg (https://ibb.co/ddeQzS)
https://preview.ibb.co/caKfYn/0502181544.jpg (https://ibb.co/kCHCeS)
https://preview.ibb.co/gAKfYn/0502181639.jpg (https://ibb.co/hSTJKS)
https://preview.ibb.co/ffCjtn/0502181643.jpg (https://ibb.co/gDnHDn)
It was a real trick to get each panel in and shave only enough to allow it to still snap into the factory holes, and surprisingly I only had to use 1 ziptie and two self tapping screws the rest where used with OEM plastic clips. Super happy about that
Nevermind the creaking when going over non-smooth surfaces...
I Lucked out with the carpet only being semi shitting, hosed it down with carpet cleaner and 409 then pressure washed it and sent it through the dryer at low heat. Still not super clean but it looks 100 times better than it did, and I took out that taco stain....
https://preview.ibb.co/fmGYm7/0502181455.jpg (https://ibb.co/gSa4tn)
Now comes the interesting bit.. The rear seats wont be usable, the cage is in the way, they have to be in the car per the rules, but we are "allowed to cut the plastic interior to fit safety equipement as long as thats the only reason"
I say that in quotes because You have to sort of read between the lines in a few areas as it's not specific, what is specific is that you have to put the seats in..
No one said anything about them maintaining function
so..
https://preview.ibb.co/cQmoKS/0501181656.jpg (https://ibb.co/fEWzR7)
https://preview.ibb.co/hTnHDn/0502181940a.jpg (https://ibb.co/c4iqYn)

https://preview.ibb.co/mNteR7/0501181741.jpg (https://ibb.co/d0L4tn)
out comes the weight! In total I put in about 75 lbs worth of interior bits and the two rear seats. I did shave about 10-12 lbs off each seat so Im guessing I saved 20 lbs of interior bits. Not a whole lot but
https://preview.ibb.co/cYieR7/0501181817.jpg (https://ibb.co/mYq4tn)
they'll never know..
https://preview.ibb.co/bvyqYn/0502181804a.jpg (https://ibb.co/gK2HDn)
Now this side barely fits but thankfully there are rear seat sliders...
Mates, there are Rear seat sliders....
Not even my luxo barge has rear seat sliders, that is way cool! I like it Toyota, I really do!
Anyways
Per Rules you are allowed to remove the spare tire and tools and whatnot as well as any plastics not permanetly held in place. The factory yaris rear has two plastic bins that hold a fabric and plastic coverpanel in place, those of which are allowed to be removed under that provision, I have them if anyone bawks but they wont go in. however that tire mount is still usefull and will be used to the fullest extent!
https://preview.ibb.co/eAL4tn/0503181240b.jpg (https://ibb.co/greazS)
https://preview.ibb.co/jtRAYn/0503181240.jpg (https://ibb.co/dUNjtn)
So there you have it. my Bump down to STS class from SMF,
Hopefully i can start re-tweaking stuff on the car, and I have a transmission in mind for taking this stock powerplant to the next level.
Bonus Footage:
https://preview.ibb.co/dyAR67/0502180957.jpg (https://ibb.co/kRhHDn)
I realized I never got a photo of both my current cars together so here they are.
the "Mom-mobile" As another member here called it...
and the nameless seat time project.
Goals next is to get an aftermarket 1nz exhaust, weld up an o2 sensor for my A/FR gauge, wire up the coolant temp gauge when the exhaust is out, cat delete and put on an actual muffler,
I also got a few Pro-solo stickers to apply and need to go over where to put them exactly.
Relocating the Battery to the Rear and wiring up a killswitch inside the hatch area for safety
Then combing through the Section 14 Street Touring rulebook to look at other altercations I can make
I want to try to hit up a time trial on the 25th of this month we will see how the schedule unfolds for that.
till next time

Love the update. Why the change in class? You may have mentioned why but I don't remember the reason
Runethecursed
05-04-2018, 06:30 PM
A few reasons that are rather wordy
Story Short: it more outlines the goals for this car, which is seat time and experience. keeps costs down and maximizes fun time
Long Answer:
1) With the interior stripped I was forced into either Street Mod or Street Prepared F, which puts me out there with hyper modified cars on Hoosiers and not only does that suck, but it ruins my overall PAX time since the modifier is crap. (if those terms are alien to anyone reading this. DM me)
So going down a class to Street Touring S class makes me more competitive with a 200 UTQG tire, as well as having a stock engine with minor bolt ons. I only make 106 hp...
2) Being in a higher class made me realize that if I wanted an actual car that was Street Modified, I wouldn't want to modify the Yaris. Id choose a better chassis or something a little more fun to drive and whip around (smiles per dollar the yaris is awesome, but being jerked off by the lovely sound of a 9000 rpm Rotary at full tilt leaves me needing new shorts and wishing I had bigger go-nads)
3) the amount of money to potentially spend, akin to Armstrong racing, is outside what I want to spend for my fun self pleasing toy. by keeping the class lower, the sort of modification I can run will be more limited and therefore overall less money to spend (I'm already like 70% there)
4) Resell, it in my mind would be easier to sell a yaris that has a full interior than a stripped out unit sans the fact the rear seats are unusable in anyway, but the interior bits are there and it seems more "dailyable" even though nothing mechanically has changed.

Short update here on a long project.
I don't need Scion XD brake calipers on the car
I dont Need upgraded pads on the car
I don't need larger slotted rotors on the car
I don't need them
But I have them...
From the junkyard I didnt bother on pricing them out seperately and Im sure for the work it would be easier in everyone else's cases to buy the 37 dollar reman unit from "you name it" place but I like keeping my hands busy. and bdsm. So there you have it
https://preview.ibb.co/hmC8B7/0507181434.jpg (https://ibb.co/gckTB7)
Disassembled for cleaning and inspection and paint and new seals. Unknown mileage on the poor parts car, and being one of the more important mods for safety! I figured id learn me some caliper stuff
https://preview.ibb.co/f7pAPS/0508181152.jpg (https://ibb.co/m2kTB7)
Before and after comparo, there was alot of brake dust on these calipers and boy oh boy it tooks a while
Few things I figured out. Dawn Dish Soap is fine, but it wont work more than just a normal solution, vs something like brake cleaner which is a dissolvent.
Second thing, these brakes are super easy to work with
Finally, wire wheels fucking hurt.

https://preview.ibb.co/n1Fvr7/0508181441a.jpg (https://ibb.co/c77myn)
Awaiting on a rebuild kit to come in from newegg of all places, cost 9.95 including the shipping.
But man oh man do they look good..
so the question now is... What color

Good Evening gents!
The past few days I wanted to slow down on spending as that brake project will consume a bit of time and money and I have a lot of things out on order...
Literally waiting for paint...
So in the meantime, a quick run to Walmart and I had a great Idea.
and by great I mean. odd
https://preview.ibb.co/mAyAty/0509181928a.jpg (https://ibb.co/cezuLd)
I was never set on how this looked on the car so a 3 dollar roll of duct tape and boom!
Not quick there yet though
https://preview.ibb.co/dgUuLd/0509181950.jpg (https://ibb.co/i5YM0d)
better, Much better.
I ran like this for a day and it got a lot of looks. It's drastic how much it changes the front look with just three bucks...
So I decided Hell, I got some leftover paints. I got some time. We are young, its night out and I am wearing glasses.. time to hit it
for those of that wondered
https://preview.ibb.co/jej5RJ/0510181438_HDR.jpg (https://ibb.co/dNObYy)
This is what it looks like. 5 pop rivets along the top. a few screws along the bottom and the fender to bumper pop rivets. which I broke and used zip ties. because racecart.
https://preview.ibb.co/h1jTfd/0510181506_HDR.jpg (https://ibb.co/ndW8fd)
the longest part of the whole process minute wait time was getting the two sides to match up MOSTLY... I'm not perfect and neither is the front bumper, but I got it close
https://preview.ibb.co/kN8ofd/0510181526.jpg (https://ibb.co/nviM0d)
First coat goes on lightly..... right?
https://preview.ibb.co/di68fd/0510181641c_HDR.jpg (https://ibb.co/i7AZLd)
Wrong, if you wait the prerequisite time between coats which is 30 min it dries too fast!
meaning when you peel up the tape without using a knife first (I'm a moron) it peels back the edges... what a catastrophe...
thankfully.... if I'm not smart, I can be handy
https://preview.ibb.co/iwS3Dy/0510181714_HDR.jpg (https://ibb.co/nowwYy)
Little straight razor to clean up the line by hand. Then respray on the new line and now the lines will be less perfect but my lines are good...
https://preview.ibb.co/gAyAty/0510181715b_HDR.jpg (https://ibb.co/jbZTfd)
looks decent hit it was some spare glosserizer. I'm not sure I'm a fan but it will prevent fade and eh if you are going to half-ass something, might as well whole ass it.
https://preview.ibb.co/bTdM0d/0510181735.jpg (https://ibb.co/iX1KmJ)
https://preview.ibb.co/etYzmJ/0510181735b.jpg (https://ibb.co/hiJAty)
https://preview.ibb.co/fU95RJ/0510181735a.jpg (https://ibb.co/h2kemJ)
Squint your eyes, shake your head and think about better things and it almost looks decent!
But I am glad enough without how it turned out. I want to order some TRD badges for the grill now and maybe something for the hood... We will see.
But that is it for today! Stay tuned for a battery relocate and finally mounting new tires on my rims...

now for the hard bit. Making sure its all dry enough to work with, installing the new rebuild kit
For anyone who has had questions on how to rebuild calipers it's insanely easy if you took them apart.
If you did like me and took em apart but forgot how they go together its pretty simple to google some youtube vids
Essentially theres a rubber square surface ring that needs to soak in Brake fluid

Some friends said they looked professional or asked if they are actually TRD. I dont believe they where serious but they look seriously good, the gold is a bit more orange than pure yellow gold, but with a few heat cycles im sure itll bronze out more. and maybe with dirt
Before I assembled the brake calipers I forgot to mention: I had sprayed it all down with 3 coats of clear VHT. Same material went on well and I hit it with a heat gun for a while.

remember when installing these, buy Corolla/matrix xrs pads but use the yaris SE rotors. youll know its them if they are 4 lug and 10.8 in measurement. Autozone has some good duralast ones I might pick up ( no reason to go stupid pricey on such a lightweight car. As far as pads Im contemplating EBC yellowstuff... cause we go hard..

Battery Relocate Kit from Jegs. this box is MASSIVE!
but It's NHRA legal which most the times is more restrictive than most tracks, and Ill shove this all behind the rear seats and box it off. Thinking about modifying it to fit some small tools and my Air Dragon tire pressure gun

Awesome stuff dude. Can you take pics and write about your battery box install and relocation? I plan to do this down the road and wouldn't mind seeing how your install went
Can Do.
Have done, read on!
This is what happens when you get antsy, instead of this happening later this week. I got up at 7 on a Sunday and started hammering and grinding it out. In fact, it took me till almost 6 to get it all in after an hour break for lunch. That said there's a lot more fab work involved cause I cant measure batteries before buying relocating kits.
So this is the kit I bought and ended up using most of it.. eventually. (https://www.jegs.com/i/Taylor/895/48101K/10002/-1)
so right away there was an issue
https://preview.ibb.co/cESVVo/0519181734.jpg (https://ibb.co/iXYhbT)
now you can tell her... yeah, it's that big
https://preview.ibb.co/kN28GT/0519181721a.jpg (https://ibb.co/jT1Pqo)
https://preview.ibb.co/dtt4qo/0519181721.jpg (https://ibb.co/mEReO8)
The hell was I gonna do? I had contemplated sending the kit back and whatnot, but the length of the positive was decent and everything was already in hand and I really like the covered boxes vs just a battery brace thats exposed.
https://preview.ibb.co/eOKzO8/0519181724.jpg (https://ibb.co/d69NbT)
Gathering a semi Idea.
So for those of you who are reading this and wondering why move the battery to the rear. in short: Moving weight even as small as 15 lbs to particular locations on the chassis will change the balance of the car, how much weight on each suspension component. By removing 15 lbs over the front wheels (namely on the driver side, where my fat ass sits) to the passenger side rear strut. In effect, it would mathematically change the balance by 1% which doesn't seem like much, but it would be the equivalent of moving the entire engine back 3 inches.
Now I could have bought the lightweight Braille AGM battery, and I wanted it... oh I wants it so bad. But I cannot afford one, (i could but its not really pertinent) and I'd rather not turn a 200 dollar project into a 500 dollar project.
Anyways
To tmontague: I chose this spot for three reasons. Class rules/Safety says box has to be outside of the passenger area
It is behind the fuel tank over the exhaust which gives me the most access to it underneath, and This location and hight allows me to still run the yaris style shelf in the back if needed But more importantly and this is a big one I can retain the rear spare tire
So without further. time to cut, measure, rivet and repeat
yes... thats backwards. I'm a terrible engineer.
https://preview.ibb.co/gnVvwT/0520180855a.jpg (https://ibb.co/g3wqVo)
or not. I figure if I cut the panel out to about 9 inches and move the one side closer and rivet it in place Ill have basically the same thing. I dont want to weld this thin of alum, and no way was I using an epoxy.. they never set right for me
https://preview.ibb.co/kU3R38/0520180855.jpg (https://ibb.co/cWfjqo)
Now mind you, all batteries are different, and this measurement was still off by about 1/8th of an inch so where the battery is wedged in the box. So if you are doing this. give yourself an extra 1/4 to 1/2 inch of extra room.
https://preview.ibb.co/eRYR38/0520180905.jpg (https://ibb.co/dH7m38)
That Rivet job though...
https://preview.ibb.co/jMOFwT/0520180905a.jpg (https://ibb.co/cm8R38)https://preview.ibb.co/guuAVo/0520180905b.jpg (https://ibb.co/eMKcAo)
https://preview.ibb.co/kwBDi8/0520180905c.jpg (https://ibb.co/nbVjqo)
With the base in mind I drilled the bottom holes to get the distance I wanted for the battery box. from here...
We go to the car.
https://preview.ibb.co/e3P2Ao/0520181140_HDR.jpg (https://ibb.co/gb0aVo)
This is where I decided it would be best. Its resting against the rear strut and forward enough to give me tire clearance and its a straight shot down through the metal and it's thicker here than near the tire well. unfortunately its about 2 inchs off the frame rail in the back but that's all under the plastic on the car, which I cannot trim.. for the most part ;)
https://preview.ibb.co/kbUDGT/0520180934_HDR.jpg (https://ibb.co/m1Npqo)
https://preview.ibb.co/nwOjO8/0520180934b_HDR.jpg (https://ibb.co/fWaaVo)
https://preview.ibb.co/d0Z8i8/0520180934a_HDR.jpg (https://ibb.co/iHwcbT)
Yes the mounts are off centered. I did that for a reason. I shimmed the box up on the left side so naturally itll sit with an angle towards the strut. and also... I didnt want to drill in an un even patch of metal
The kit calls for a 3/8th inch hole for the rods so, that was easy
now for the harder-er parts
https://preview.ibb.co/m6J7bT/0520181052a.jpg (https://ibb.co/d8uPO8)
https://preview.ibb.co/eNuDGT/0520181036.jpg (https://ibb.co/dx2di8)
https://preview.ibb.co/hDMFVo/0520181053.jpg (https://ibb.co/iVWtGT)
Notice the reliefs in the side plate for running the positive and negative wires...
Well They dont match up with the battery anyways. so Ignore them
https://preview.ibb.co/fSx0wT/0520181121.jpg (https://ibb.co/k5jfwT)
https://preview.ibb.co/gxfLwT/0520181121a.jpg (https://ibb.co/jYiJi8)
It actually looks decent but the fitment is kinda... mediocre at best if you look too closely
From here I goofed and primered the box before making the final two holes for the rods...
getting antsy, (major fault of mine)
https://preview.ibb.co/cUBFVo/0520181139.jpg (https://ibb.co/kxi7bT)
https://preview.ibb.co/nfMhAo/0520181243_HDR.jpg (https://ibb.co/g8YJi8)
All mocked up
https://preview.ibb.co/nxPr38/0520181248_HDR.jpg (https://ibb.co/b9Fyi8)
Took a cut off wheel to the excess rod length. There's still about 2 inches top and bottom combined of extra length. Also make sure you follow the threads with a tap or clean up the threads with more grinding ( i rounded the top of them to make bolting them on easier) This is important because of you misthread the bolt you have a chance for rounding it
https://preview.ibb.co/ezvW38/0520181248.jpg (https://ibb.co/mKjPO8)
Sitting pretty
While it was like this We took the time to run the Positive wire.
Now here is where I didnt take too many photos but basically
We ran the cable under the carpet into the trim panel by the passenger door. then up the footwell into the passenger side fender over the top of the passenger side front strut. From there it follows the other electrical stuff (over the ecu) to the positive terminal on the stock location, here we mated it all together with the factory bolt we removed from the OEM connector and I cut the oem plastic cover to fit and zip tied it to the post that held the battery previously.
The Negative we used the rear seat mounting point and slid the rear seat back so it covered it. nice and neat
Painted it the duralast bed liner for the speckled black look. if you do this. dont touch it for at least 3 hours... it says dry time is sooner but its a lie... it peels like plastidip unless fully cured.
https://preview.ibb.co/hv0LwT/0520181430_HDR.jpg (https://ibb.co/fFhpqo)
https://preview.ibb.co/dqijO8/0520181617a.jpg (https://ibb.co/iivLwT)
This side shows you the reliefs I had to make. From this photo I took it off and made the gaps bigger. Make sure to use the supplied grommets
Also breather..
https://preview.ibb.co/c6jr38/0520181617a_HDR.jpg (https://ibb.co/jQYjO8)
And how it all sits from the back view
https://preview.ibb.co/jntJi8/0520181617_HDR.jpg (https://ibb.co/e97di8)
Now if you take two shots of vodka squint your eyes and look sideways it actually looks like a decent job. we could have cut down the positive cable some more, but I just tucked the excess in the rear passenger area since who cares about it.
https://preview.ibb.co/nhCpqo/0520181714_HDR.jpg (https://ibb.co/iUJjO8)
Bam, I can take more photos of the engine bay if that intersts anyone but for now I have to make my car learn how to idle again, a few hot minutes of running and itll be back to fine and crackling and popping like the performance motor I want it to be!
I have no bonus footage today as It's been super slow and Ive basically installed everything I have for the car right now...
Till next time

New List of Mods, kept it light for this month, Trying to get my brakes but they are taking their sweet time (Cant help it I ordered the rotors from Rock Auto and well, They are cheap and if I have to wait a few more days so be it, they'll show up literally 16 hours before raceday XD)
Anyways So I got bored last weekend and the weather was okayish enough.

Let's paint some Eyebrows

Not Sure if I exactly like em, but free mods are best mods.
For inquiring minds, I used white Flex Seal. Since then they have dirtied up to match the paint on the car.
Same Day I got kinda creative, Shopping around for the Yaris TRD "Rally" wing I found it was 200 bucks and some change. Not sure I wanted to spend that much I figured I could make a custom one and wanted to see how it would look

Kinda Digging it
https://preview.ibb.co/myHvDT/0603181220_HDR.jpg (https://ibb.co/bCsj7o)
Certainly would stand out. I would make it out of Aluminum with CF sides. and probably gurney flap it
That said it's also against SCCA STS rules, but the TRD wing isnt since it was a factory option... So... on the fence if I want to keep it

Actual NETZ badge, OEM and all that. fits like stock

https://preview.ibb.co/dm5yYT/0604181715a_HDR.jpg (https://ibb.co/iviVf8)
The theme is to turn this into a sort of psuedo TRD sport modded Vitz RS
https://preview.ibb.co/kdCqf8/0604181722.jpg (https://ibb.co/c3x1no)
Because I can, and I did.... Cookie for anyone who knows what the emblem is used for
I also rummaged through my box of Yaris Bits (literally named so) and found the OEM tow Bolt cover. Decided it was time to chop it up to make it fit
https://preview.ibb.co/cMT7So/0604181801.jpg (https://ibb.co/dWvnSo)
And wahalla, it looks good again

https://preview.ibb.co/ftY7So/0604181850.jpg (https://ibb.co/gZsdYT)
But wait there is more, As I was Finagling in the garage with the stuff a package came.
I ordered an aFe intake stage 2 dry filter from the website for cheap. like 160 bucks cheap. and man oh man am I impressed with the quality control and how serious they make their stuff. that said their instruction sheet was practically useless and the photos where too grainy to use, all said, its pretty self explanitory, no CEL no issues, and it sounds good and everyone loves induction noises

https://preview.ibb.co/kiHvDT/0604181450.jpg (https://ibb.co/c0K8YT)
New intake, Please note it looks more tucked and whatnot because I had to modify how everything was ran, this intake is supposed to piggy back mount wise off the factory battery tray and some misc brackets, all that was deleted when I did my battery removal. So it looks a little cleaner
https://preview.ibb.co/b6O2tT/0604181450a.jpg (https://ibb.co/gOjWno)
Forwarning as well, remember to put on the rubber liner before wedging the tray in there. I did not and well. too lazy to pull it back out so busted knuckles to get it all to fit

Giving me ideas on cutting up the bumper for some inlets... just for cheese. I gotta check the rule book though.

Testing out some JDM based Slaps from redbubble., I hate the white lining on it but they are easy enough to cut, I have ordered different ones anyways but just wanted to see how they held up in the sun and whatnot. So far day 6 later they are doing fine....

That's about as good as the night got, I suck terribly at it and turns out shes married. /Happily/ :iono:
but ye I go do more stuff than just cars...
Also cause I am emotionally disturbed: I am contemplating selling the yaris as I am already running into the limitations of what the chassis can do for me, and any more sort of modifications for power is counter inuitive to the nature of the car and Id rather be spending that on something else. so if anyone is interested in buying it from me... I will entertain the idea.

I can, stand by for that
Taylor's kit runs the two studs all the way through, so its bolted down to the frame via like 18 inch long studs which have nuts at the bottom in the box and again on the battery tie down and then the box top.

BRAKES ARE ON THE CAR HOLY BALLS BATMAN
Finally. Long story, so I installed the new brakes last week actually, but we noticed they felt mooshier and weren't holding. I did everything. I mean everything, Bench bled the master, bled the master on the car, bled the abs module, all 6 ports, then rebled all the wheels. no Luck took it to the dealer, they power bled it twice, came back to me and said the master was bad. Re-orded a new master, did the SAME process (meanwhile destroying my hands cause no glove, cause.... I'm not gonna live past 60.) and FINALLY, I have the results.
And you'll read about them below
Before all that. Mocking up a self made wing, that sucked terribly

https://preview.ibb.co/ftsAzd/0603181220a_HDR.jpg (https://ibb.co/er8TkJ)
I am playing around with this idea just for kicks, Decided in the long run it would be better just to get an OEM wing. And I am trying to find a Rally TRD wing... would class better too since I am now allowed aftermarket wings, but I am allowed OEM options. and the car basically is a Vitz RS now sans body kit panels..

I am really happy with the color. They are holding well and not leaking, and yes I did rebuild them all by hand and re honed the bores and checked clearances and all that. the rebuild kit came from newegg of all places and was like 9 bucks they are insanely easy to find and there's no reason to buy them new. they were 46 bucks from the junkyard, 9 bucks ish for the rebuild kit, 15 bucks in paint. another 8 in stickers and boom. what looks like TRD upgraded brakes
not even Gazoo runs these.. ( they do but they arent awesome looking) I used the gold paint but I think black is more GRMN proper...
So my thoughts on all this.
The brake pedal has gotten noticibly mooshier, its not terrible but its enough to make me not absolutely love driving it.
that said I adjusted the brake pedal for no play, and put the height up. and then unplugged the vac assist, now braking requires a heavy foot and to get it to stop needs alot of effort but to slow down its a simple stab and lift which is what this car needs for the short track.
the future will involve the scion XD brake booster which is a 7/8 bore master at m10x1 inv fitting vs what we run on the yaris OE which is 13/16. Ive also looked at running a bigger corolla set up with a 1 inch bore and still running a blocked booster (manual braking!)
but we will see because!....
It's for sale! officially, the price is kinda high because I am sort of playing with it for now. But I am serious. If the YW member wants to get on this deal I will gladly work on pricing and give a full layout of what has been done!
this car is immensely fun, astoundingly reliable and stll quite competitive, but I am outgrowing it by leaps. I should have known this (came from an BSP rx8, before that Ive had BSM subaru...) as I am to the point where I can Spend $$$ on making it faster or better or I can use that money for a car that has a higher limit or is simply cooler.
I am trying to get it to a person who is looking to get their feet wet into auto racing or autox as its basically done minus some gauges and maybe an actual 5 point harness. (street car has DOT legal 4 point..)

So please pass the word, give me a shout. I check my messages and emails
if it doesnt sell Ill keep working on it and see what happens ( theres a 69 dart up my ways thats tempting me..)
So thanks for watching

I readjusted the drum brakes and it fixed the issue. No new photos but man oh man. for guys who are adamant their brake system is fluid tight, check your drums first. I spent hours trying to bleed and get it all sorted. nah it was just the drum spacing.
still might get that scion master..
