View Full Version : Southern Ontario Track Days 2018

Hey guys, I figured I'd create a thread for anyone who is planning on doing track days this season so they can post up when and where they're going and maybe some others can join. There are not many Yaris's that show up to track days around here so it would be good to get some of us together.

TMP out in Cayuga has open track days every Friday from about 5pm until dusk for $100 cash day of or $70 6 days in advance. I plan to head out there every 2 weeks or so on Fridays. It's about 45 mins away from downtown Oakville and Friday evenings tend to be quieter than weekends so you can usually run at your own pace without many other cars getting in the way or blowing by you.

Also, if anyone local does any autox events let me know, I'm looking to get into them and wouldn't mind tagging along with someone

Tentatively I'm thinking about heading out on Friday May 4th for a shakedown/season opener

Let me know who's interested

The wife and I will be out for the evening of May 11th. It's her birthday and she wants to go to the track. :)

We should be out quite a bit at TMP this summer.

Hmm, I might as well head out on the 11th instead of the 4th then.

Let me know who's interestedI just signed up for Wednesday May 9, 5pm start. I'm hoping this will allow me to learn to manual shift better. My white Yaris has only 1200 km on it. I hope there will be other slow cars there that I can follow.

Using the track to learn how to shift better, interesting approach.

You going alone, or got a co-pilot with you?

easy enough to practice heel-toe on the streets...

agreed, to become efficient at it I'd recommend doing it any time possible, meaning day to day. There is a lot to focus on during hot laps so a normal commute is perfect time to perfect one skill.

One thing to look out for since M/T is new to you is to avoid a money shift aka throwing the car into a lower gear instead of a higher one. This is a quick way to ruin a potentially fun track day very quickly. If in doubt don't let that clutch out.

Enjoy the lapping, you'll have a great time:thumbsup:

How'd it go for you Wednesday?Great fun. I wish there were slower cars I could keep up with.
Due to the osteoarthritis in my clutch hip I was limping after 45 min straight lapping.
I'm hoping to passenger in you car to check the Bc coilovers with your spring rate. I had brake dive and wallowing on corner 1.
Over all I had a great time and will go again! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180511/d13bcf78d67211b0d7575f07e88517a7.jpg

Energy Suspension Kit 8.1103 - Scion xB

You can find a lot of stuff for my model year searching around for Scion xa/xb stuff.

I got the rear one done.......Tuesday night I will try to tackle the other 2. The Lower Rear is a bitch.......Its done now with beefier hardware as well.

Unfortunately I won't make that one. Going away for 1st-4th. I should probably give the car some lovin' before hitting the track. At the very least, use up the old gas in it...:burnrubber:

The weather changed for Cayuga on Friday for the worse. I don't want to run in the rain, no fun in a FWD.

Looking at next Friday now.........June 8

tmontague
05-30-2018, 11:15 AM
Ya weather isn't looking so hot, I'll be out regardless as the rain will help me work on car control. For anyone coming out still look for a navy blue pop up tent, I'll be there.

I may go on the 8th as well depending on my shedule

Yup, breaking sound barriers ;)

I'll be there around 4ish, look for the usual blue pop up tent, feel free to toss some stuff under it.

Side note, I'd stay away from the paddock under the bleachers, I had about 4 different kids in their porshe 911's ignorantly block me in or park in a way that makes it stupid difficult to back in after a session. I'll probably be in the area behind the concrete berrier, much quieter there

Good Fun last night at TMP. I learned a lot about my car........namely how fast it is and that it NEEDS a LSD.

After riding in Trevs car I also realized I need much stiffer spring rates.

Back out in a few weeks.........

tmontague
07-28-2018, 03:53 PM
yup, fun night for sure, much better when you're there with people you know than flying solo. Your car is definitely fast, it was fun chasing down STI's and getting the point by

You will definitely benefit from proper spring rates and an LSD, I wouldn't be surprised if you could get down to a 1:26 with that set up

I learned 2 things sitting in your car...my tires are heat cycled out definitively and I need to start running proper track brake pads.

Looking forward to another track day

Ronnie V
07-29-2018, 01:33 AM
I think on a no mistakes unimpeded lap I can get the car to a 1.26 flat the way it sits. The session before I took you for a ride I ran a 27.0 and a FRS totally slowed me down through the last 3 corners before the main straight.......I would have sworn it was a 26.6 and there were definitely a few mistakes on that lap.

If the LSD and the stiffer spring rates are good for a second and a half a lap then that should put the car mid 1.24's Totally good enough for a Echo.

If I raised it up and really set it up for the track maybe faster but it has to be slammed.......just looks so good. :)

Can you guys make it for Friday August 10? Trevor, you can check out my Carbotech xp 8 pads. I have no complaints about them except for some noise when they have heat in them. I remember the xp10 being noisier then the xp8 on the street. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180730/aff67900190c57809fc800caaeac7fe6.jpg

I will likely not be out again until 3rd or 4th Friday in August.

I've actually just ordered xp10's for the front. They will only be used to drive to and from the track plus track time and I'll have a separate set of rotors for them so I'm not worried about noise or rotor wear when cold. The HPS's will be my daily pads.

I also ordered a rotor flex hone to resurface the rotors as they are both glazed. Looking forward to some new stopping power

Ronnie V
07-31-2018, 07:22 PM
I can do Aug 17th or 24th as well.........

and I decided to just leave the Hawk Blues on the car.......I think stopping a 4500lb whatever on cold blues is much different than stopping a 1900lb Echo..........I bet my current combo just never wears out. :D

I will repost if my rotors disintegrate in 3 weeks. ;)

I'm booked for this Friday the 7th for the evening session - post here if you plan in coming out

Ronnie V
09-03-2018, 09:56 PM
After going over the car on Saturday there was a very large puddle under the driver rear shock........it's leaking badly.

The coilovers I was texting you about are on order.......because of the custom spring rates I think it will be a few weeks before I'll be ready. How long did yours take to show up? and if you recall, what was the length of the rear springs?

on further inspection the front drivers side rotor is cracked badly and the caliper is pretty much ceased.........she took a bit of a beating on Thursday.......

I'll be back before the snow flies to push it into the 25's.......I'll text you when the coilovers show up.......might come on Friday with the wifes car.......I'll let you know......

tmontague
09-04-2018, 07:32 AM
Rears are 6" front are 8".

Tough news on your car but at least you gave it a good look over. You will enjoy the improved handling at tmp w/ your new coil overs it makes a huge difference.

Iirc mine took about just under 3 weeks to be shipped to my door and that was in the spring which is probably their busy time.

What do you think was the reason for your rotors cracking? Are yours drilled?

Hope you can make it out in the brz

Ronnie V
09-05-2018, 10:39 AM
Yeah, totally. They have been machined twice and the crack is directly through the center of a hole.......the Hawk Blue pads were the straw that broke the camels back........

It's ok, I have brand new Cryo treated stoptechs ready to go on and remanufactured front calipers on the way (powdercoated red to decrease stopping distance) and new braided steel brake lines........should knock all of the gremlins out of the braking system. :)

What was the deal with the Swift springs?? I recall you mentioning something about this when we were at the track........

I can't wait to try out the new setup. I can see what the new coilovers did and then over the winter do the diff........then next summer see what that does for laptimes independently of the new suspension........

Apparently my KSports are 6.7K fronts and 3.5K rears........albeit probably very tired, they are over a decade old now......

I wonder what the fastest Sub-Compact lap ever set at TMP is..........

tmontague
09-05-2018, 11:54 AM
Good call on the red - I hear it is good for 10hp when applied to an engine and about 10m shorter stopping when applied to brakes ;)

The Swift's are lighter and perform more consistently throughout their full range of travel than stock steel springs. They apparently ride smoother. I didn't have the extra cash so I just went with standard springs but can always update down the road. Honestly, at this point I don't see a need to put my cash toward Swift's I'd rather put it towards other things.

I'm pretty sure the sub compact record is north if a 1:20 or at least for the street legal class it would be

Ronnie V
09-05-2018, 02:03 PM
Is that Sub compact or compact?

I think you and I should start a Sub Compact Southen Ontario FB group Trev.......there was another Blue Echo (not Daniels) lapping there last Friday.......my wife was there running her drag car.

tmontague
09-06-2018, 12:29 PM
I'm talking about sub compact but yes I agree a fb page would probably be a good platform to bring like minded people together

I now have my Sparco seat mounted, looking forward to testing that out

Ronnie V

You're gonna love the seat.

With the 2019 track season upon us I figured it would be a good idea to start a FB group to keep track of outings and the inevitable fun that will be had.

I got the idea from a member here on YW and named it the wannabspecs. Thanks to YW member deng 😁.......hope you don't mind.

So check out and ask to join the FB group and I also started a Instagram.

It should be a great summer of track nights.

Ok, everything looks right. I think it is just FB doing some pre approval of new groups........anyone should be able to find the group. And on FB you can only change the privacy settings on a group once every 28 days......

If you guys don't find it with another search then I guess I'll post a link........if I can.......
