How often does serpentine belt need replaced?

I have a 2010 Yaris with about 53,000 miles. At a recent oil change, the mechanic said the serpentine belt needed replaced. I thought it might be a little early so I passed. What is the official word on the lifespan of this belt?

The one on my wifes Camry had 150,000+ when I replaced it. According to the /gates belt gauge I have, its still good! But that prolly because of the belt tensioner Camrys have. Our Yaris doesnt have one so belt life is likely less.

But Im thinking yours is fine. Does it squeal? Are there cracks in the teeth?

There is no official word. The longevity of a belt is subject to many variables and it all comes down to regular inspections and replacing when showing signs that its time is up.

My service and maintenance book (U.K. issue) recommends an inspection (not change) at 60000 miles/6 years and every 10000 miles/1 year thereafter. The European recommendation is slightly different at 63000 miles and 9000 miles respectively they work in kilometres though. :rolleyes:
So, as bronsin asks, if there is no visible signs of deterioration and/or noise, then leave well alone.
Possibly your mechanic has seen something?

Mine started getting squeaky at 160k miles. Replaced it, no more noise. There were some cracks and tiny chunks missing, as is typical of a worn belt.

I was helping a buddy installing the new set of tires and forged wheels (http://4wheelonline.com/forged-wheels.292396) on his truck when his brother with 2010 Yaris arrive. At 128k miles, it was squealing and have some cracks. So yes, it depends on the physical condition of the belt.

Mine was dry and cracked after 5 years 120k km.

I'd replace it the same as a timing belt.

The Yaris' have timing chains, not timing belts. Unless you meant water pump and thermostat.

I just inspected mine at 110k miles while replacing my alternator, still looks good.

I'm saying the acc belt, should be changed at more or less the same interval as a timing belt.

Mine was pretty cooked at 9 years/90,000 miles. My mechanic replaced it when he did my alternator. There were cracks in the same place going through multiple ribs of the belt. That is when its time to change it.

I have my 2010 Yaris at the dealer right now for 2 recalls. They just called & said the serpentine belt is cracked and seems to be dry rotting. I only have 38,000 miles but told him to go ahead & replace it. $96 + tax. I probably could have gotten it done cheaper by the local service station, but I'm going with the OEM belt.

I had them save the old one for a backup & the inside of it has many small cracks.

I replaced at 145k miles a fine running belt that seemed maybe original and oriental. (It had a very fine weave brown woven cover with 2 perpendicular seams stitched w/ very fine thread...and no labeling whatsoever.
All the vee ribs were cracked everywhere but no pieces were missing.

Mind of Toyota Yaris shop manual and owners manual say cracks are OK and give no recommendation to ever replace unless chunks are missing. (But w/ supreme manufacturing quality, everything wears to 99 percent life at the same time... when the first chunk departs do I want to be on a trip somewhere?)

(Also still running on what maybe looks like an original battery--no labeling whatsoever and some crayon marks. Gilroy CA car that may have never seen salt or freezing before I joined here.)

I had one on my Echo that measured fine with the gates gauge spontaneously break.
