View Full Version : Vortex Generator

I noticed a while ago the newer yaris has a small vortex generator on the inside of the wingmirror base to reduce wind rush. And then i thought about how much noise there was between the wing mirrors when driving at speed.
So I decided I'd make my own and see if they work. I 3D printed them and painted them. Used a good double sided tape to stick them down. Unbelievably they actually work. There is a very noticeable decrease in wind rush. Has anyone else done something similar and also noticed a difference. Granted these are a bit big for the car but they do the job. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180519/c75eb67f7bba03b1e6702251fe89c8d5.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180519/2d1cb091deef2c1e3962af8e46c5f51f.jpg

I'd have to say you are the first. At least the first to have talked about doing something. Not been too much mention of people 3D printing car parts either. Good for you.

That's pretty cool.
My Mk3 (U.K.), pre facelift, same as the o.p., has a plastic piece factory fitted to the driver's side only and much less obvious. Designed to do the same thing. I'll try to post a picture.

Newer models have a small vortex generator on the passenger side to counter the wiper blade air being channelled there. I put 2 on each side, one right by the base and further up the trim. I had to place the ome further up as it was a flatter surface to mount it. But if you look from behind the car the two are directly in the range of the wing mirror, and help disturb the air so it can pass around the problem area.

On each side, I placed a deer whistle ahead of the mirror base...stuck to that black trim piece on the fender.
(There are four on the 91 Corolla--two taped into the empty fog-lite holes in the bumper cover, and one stuck at each end of the cowl trim piece ahead of the mirrors.)

sound like an exhaust leak.
"the difference in wing mirror shape "?
They are both the same shape in spite of being left and right handed.

Sorry, difference in position, the passenger is slightly more towards the window than the driver to counter for the difference in distance.

interesting
i had no idea they help high speed stability
i thought it was only wind noise suppression
thanks for posting

generally toyota designs things that are functional instead of trying to just copy something. thats why their cars are generally so bland and expensive because the design is slippery and functional in the sake of economy.
because of the design of the yaris it pulls a 0.30 c/d (3rd gen till the 2017 redesign) with the 2007 onwards yaris pulling 0.29 C/d yet the third gen is more efficient due to its European design.
also the oem wing helps with stability, as does fitting the side skirts from the factory, and the rear stablizer bar and if you add 16 or 17 inch rims with the lower springs you will add stability as everthing for that car all works together to make it into a normal car.

So I could hear they where working, today I saw them. Driving on the freeway I had to clear my window so I jetted the water and when it was pushed to the drivers side, I could see the whole stream being pushed over the wing mirror area and along my drivers window. Very interesting to watch.
