I heard a loud whirring sound on the way back yesterday. Popped the hood and had a burnt smell.
Brought it to someone earlier and he confirmed that the electronic components on the alternator burnt out hence the smell. Replaced with a salvage unit at 1/5th the price compared to a brand new one from Toyota.
First alternator replacement for an 8 year old car with 146k km mileage.
