Water pump pulley badly rusted. What to do? Will the bell polish the roast off? It’s pretty heavy the car is been sitting for a while. Or should I polish up the pully. :iono:
I’m wondering if a rusted pully like that can destroy a belt? :iono:

The rust on the pulley is most likely just a cosmetic nuisance. Clean it off with a wire brush and you should be good. I'd be more concerned with checking that the pump pulley spins freely, and doesn't have any play. Your belt will be fine, at worst the rust might slightly shorten the life of the belt if it was quite bad and you just left it as is.

Good idea about the wire brush. That got me to thinking. I have a half inch wide wire brush on the 6 inch handle which would fit nicely into the space where a pulley rotates. It should be possible to hold it against the moving pulley with ease.
If that doesn’t do the trick, I have 50 and 200 emery cloth fold it into squares I will hold in a vice grip. And apply to the pulley well that rotates. I’ll finish up with some scotch bright for polishing.
The rust is pretty deep and pitted. The belt looks new I don’t want to wear it out prematurely.

False alarm! The wife drove the car 20 miles back-and-forth to work today and the bell polish the pulley up very nicely.
I always think the worst!
