Is there any reason I couldn't, say, buy something like this 98-02 Toyota Corolla Rav4 Tacoma Radio Cassette Tape 86120-04090 A56409 LK31 (https://www.ebay.com/itm/98-02-Toyota-Corolla-Rav4-Tacoma-Radio-Cassette-Tape-86120-04090-A56409-LK31/142943430012?_trkparms=aid%3D555018%26algo%3DPL.SI M%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D52885%26meid%3D896c2a5ef14c4954 9923bc45c00a3428%26pid%3D100012%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D7 %26sd%3D181398900141%26itm%3D142943430012&_trksid=p2047675.c100012.m1985#viTabs_0) and install it? I found a pdf with a pinout here (https://www.installdr.com/harnesses/Toyota-Wiring.pdf) that says "1987 and newer." It looks exactly like the plugs behind the head unit in my Yaris, and exactly like the two plugs on the right hand side of the back of that tape deck.

Assuming I don't care about brackets / mounting, if I just plug it in, will it work? Should I be scared? Have they really changed the design that much?

You'll lose your aux port but yes, it will work.

I would search a bit more because I'm pretty sure they have the right shape one from a slightly newer Corolla or Camry that has a tape and CD player that will fit perfectly.

Here, this will fit perfect and work just fine. Just without aux support.

Awesome, thank you. I also have a 98 Camry and a lottttttt of tapes. Maybe I'll check around at junkyards and see if I can find one of those. Should I be able to use anything I see with those connectors?

You might need to double-check the wiring just to be sure, cuz it didn't work anymore afterwards.
