Reminds me of what the guy that bumped into my car said on the night of the incident.

"It's dark and the car's black, so I couldn't see it in my reverse camera!"

:bs:

The idiocracy trudges onward.

Have you ever driven a car from the 1980s or 90s recently? The lack of safety equipment makes you damn sure that you drive defensively.

And the decline of competent drivers continues...

Always amazes me at how new tech comes out offering false promises of increased safety while data often soon follows showing the opposite to be true.

Red light cameras anyone?...

It might be worthwhile if all this new tech lived up to its claims.

I still like a couple of bumper stickers I saw on Youtube:

"Smile, you're on Tailgater Cam" and
"Sorry for driving so close in front of you".

For many, driving has simply become something you do while you focus on doing far more important things.

I'm pretty happy with the safety tech in my new Rav 4 (2018 Hybrid XLE). It was a huge reason why we purchased it instead of a slightly older one.

Updating Social Media?? Taking Selfies? Texting?

There was a campaign here a while back with the slogan "M8 it can w8". The idea being that if you are driving, you should be concentrating on driving.

I'm not sure anyone is saying it's inherently bad. I think the argument being made is that too many folks get lazy and completely rely on it rather than practice normal safety measures with the tech as added measures.

the only safety item is good driver sense skill and knowing how to drive properly. i can take a 40mph bend at 80mph in my yaris. :P

Consumers are basically being forced to subsidize the costs of developing 'safety systems' that are really only needed in autonomous vehicles. In regular cars, these systems are just complexity-adding gimmicks that will cost owners extra money in purchase/repairs over the lifetime ownership experience of the vehicle and allow certain types of drivers to dangerously ignore (or not even learn) defensive driving skills in favor of stupid, frivolous distractions.

see, i'm so old, that when i read this, my mind went to a BMW M8 and a Volkswagen w8. (passat in this case) i was really confused and had to actually say it out loud to understand what it means.
then i seen you were from AUS and it all came together. had i been in my car i might have crashed from all the confusion...

Sorry to cause confusion.

You wouldn't seriously be looking at Yarisworld while driving would you?

along the same vein, an article i read years ago about how removing stop signs and traffic lights might make people drive more safely. i think of it when i see someone in a yukon XL tailgating people then speeding off to do 90mph.
