But seriously, the only reason why manufacturers still use them is because they're cheap, and they do the job. I don't like cleaning them, and I don't like replacing them. Disc brakes rule.

I've never really messed with them, the yaris is the only car I've ever owned with drums. I'm assuming on a car as light at the yaris that they last quite a while.

I got 150k miles out of my factory brake pads on the front. I guess I should have a look at the drums.

But they will seize on if allowed to. I always leave the handbrake of after washing the car, more in winter.
I had a problem last winter when the drums must have frozen onto the drum. It was a nightmare trying to free them. Eventually achieved by driving forwards and backwards on my street. Must have lookd a bit strange to an observer.
It threw up ABS and Traction fault warning lights and stored trouble codes them. :rolleyes:

Zero Drag and a self adjusting parking brake.......for a car as light as the Yaris they are perfect.

well i know from experience. any sort of modifications to the master/booster/ front calipers throws the braking feel way off, and the drums are sorta.... inferior to all those

thats why you replace it with SE stuff so it doesnt do that.

the stuffs not expensive you just need to pull wrecker parts. :flame:

Make a lot of foot brake stops in reverse, or adjust the star wheels. Search and read lots of info on this here in yarsisworld.
One peculiarity of the 2nd gens is that a number of reports indicate the self-adjusters don't work very well. (Handbrake develops a lot of clicks.)

With a truck it's easy just to climb underneath and hit the star adjusters, but the Yaris is a little shorter to the ground. I was hoping there was a way to easily adjust them automatically going reverse and pulling the parking brake or going in reverse and hitting the foot brake maybe. Mine's a 2016 if that makes any difference.

I'll try going reverse and stopping a few times see if that shortens pull of the parking brake

The guy here who did it that way said it worked with a lot of stops, not a few. It could be the handbrake works better than footbrake, or worse, or not at all. Since the fronts aren't helping, the rears do all the work. But the clever invention couldn't expect people to stop in reverse with the handbrake.

+1 on hard to reach the star wheels from behind. But the drum usually slides right off...Tercel still required bearing disassembly, I recall.

I like to inspect shoes, de-dust, and scrape rust from the edge that can form w/ high miles/use in salt spray.
