View Full Version : Radiator Cap - 1.1 bar or 0.9?

Hello everyone,
I own a 2009 Yaris LE 1,5L hatchback. She was in a accident recently - long story short, everything is fine by now and she runs like nothing happened :smile:
But a radiator cap is scratched, so I decide to change it. The thing is, the current one is 0.9 bar. I ordered a OEM new one (and received it already). The seller put in my order a 1.1 cap, instead of 0.9 I chose. They insist the 1.1 cap is the right one, not 0.9
I googled and yes - the most results confirm what the seller said.
But:

- I'm a second owner, bought my car 2 years ago. Right before selling, previous owners did a full inspection at the dealer. There are bunch of recommendations in those inspection's papers - but nothing about radiator cap or cooling system whatsoever.
The dealer just overlooked the "wrong" radiator cap?..

- I've never had any issues with the cooling system since I bought my Yaris. No overheating, nothing is leaking, the ODB shows "all the sensors report no trouble codes", etc. All these 2 years with the 0.9 bar radiator cap :cool:

But now I'm confused - which on is the right one? 1.1 or 0.9?

Good question.

The GSIC manual says a new cap should test as 0.95 to 1.25 while For a used cap, the minimum acceptable reading is 0.8

This suggests to me that the 1.1 cap is more likely to be the correctone, but the 0.9 cap would be an acceptable substitute.

Either would be fine. The dealer never mentioned it as it is well within spec for them. I also doubt they go to the lengths of testing a rad cap for an inspection.

You're over thinking it, either will work and you will not notice a difference for a daily driver.

1.1 is fine. all it is for is protection of the cooling system. if you are overheating, it will not matter which one you have.

tmontague, probably you're right about overthinking, but as long as I learn something new - I'm fine with it :-)

DarkShadowFox, it's not about going higher or lower - it's about finding the right one. From what I know, it's better to use what is supposed to be used, which is why I was wondering.

I noticed the small round rubber that is normally attached to the rad cap is no longer there. I don't know where it fell off to but I wonder if it fell into the radiator. I already changed the cap but should I be worried of any possible damage to my cooling system?
