It only makes this noise when in the higher revs just before you would gear up.Lets say I have it in third going up a hill and stay in the higher end of third I hear this tinkling sound, could be comming from passenger side of engine?.As soon as I change gear the noise dissapears because of lower rpm.Just curious if any others have heard same noise?

From a bit of research this could be the timing chain?

My best guess is that the heat shield around the exhaust manifold has rusted in one or several locations and is rattling. The easiest fix is just rip it off.

I do not think the sound is related to vibration. The higher rpm is not causing vibration/s

I will remove shield and see,but...

Easy enough to check it. Just reach in over the valve cover and grab it. If it moves, then there is your answer. Chances are one or both of the attachment points near where the exhaust pipe meets the manifold are shot. I ripped mine out last year.

Have you heard what Iam describing only higher rpm?

If it is the shield which one.The one closer to the gas tank was resecured with self taping screws when I did Ebrake cable. You say manifold so it would be inside the engine compartment?

You were correct as usual.I reached back and sure enough loose and makes exact noise I heard when moved. Its not quite tear offable but will remove in the spring.

Its actually still attached fairly good.Looks to be one of the 3 screws that has come undone.I may try to rescrew the one.

Tight fit and may need to remove black engine cover thing and cowling.Just glad the noise is cosmetic so to speak.

My 2 bottom bolts have completely broken off, so if anything, I'm just going to remove the shield. My exhaust manifold had a hole where it meets the cat,so it might just be a new exhaust manifold at that point.

heat shield - is it like an aluminum sheet covering the exhaust pipe and held by 3 bolts? i think my heat shield also moves and make a sound, it looks like it has a washer made of rubber???? there is slight play but you can hear it metal to metal hitting the bolts..

i think i need to replace the washers but i dont know the part number... can you pls tell me the part number of the washers used for this?

Yes, it’s just an aluminum sheet

Just take it off. It’s so much easier than messing around with it to keep it

I got the loose shield off.Still tinkling metallic sound higher revs.Cant see anything else loose.

Could it just be the engine showing its age?

Its annoying whatever it is.I have heard identical sound on older beat up cars.

There are six heat shields in total. The other 5 are all under the car. You'll have to get under there and check them all for corroded connection points. I've had to deal with 3 underbody shields over the past few years.

Will do.

Currently looking around and came across this.He describes what I have pretty near spot on.

I know these are rotary engines and they have a metallic sound but thats not what he is talking about.(I used to have a RX7 BTW)

This post aswell.Heatshields.

I will check it out tomorrow.

Got it solved. It was a thicker metal flange around the exhaust.A spot weld came undone.Mechanic retacked and all is good.

Oh oh oh check your water pump/ water pump seal.

I know this is old but how do I do that.

I only get the noise when it is really hot weather.

The noise is stil there.all shields removed even underneath car.

Had 2 mechanics go over exhaust while having other work done.

I do notice I only get the noise in really hot weather,

Not a peep all winter and cooler months.

do you get a manual trans? if yes then check the 2 shifter cables if they are rubbing against each other... i just had a hard 2 months figuring out mine and lamost ordered a clutch set as advised by 2 shop mechanics i went... with endless troubleshooting i even got 1 bolt off the exhaust damaged since i suspect the exhaust was making the sound.. when moving the engine while it is off, there is a slight sound too but that is near the exhaust and just the 2 shifter cables grinding each other... i could be wrong but it is worth a try if you have the stick shift. I placed a rubber cushion in between the metal guide and put a little grease and voila all the unusual metallic sound are gone.
