View Full Version : Excessive snow/ice build up

So as the title states, I'm getting excessive snow and ice build up inside the rear rims. I don't ever remember having this problem on any other of my cars.

I'm running a stock 15" steel rim. The issue is the buildup isn't always balanced causing a bad vibrations at speed.

The vent holes in the rim don't really allow for easy clearing of the buildup, and as these tires were just mounted a month ago I don't really wanna spend more money on an open faced style rim (think 5 or 4 spoke) that would allow for easy clearing of the snow and ice.

Anyone have any tricks? Do i gotta coat these puppies in Pam (cooking spray) so nothing sticks? Lol

Any thoughts or ideas are welcome!

I hear tanning lotion works great, also attracts the sun to melt the snow away!
In all seriousness I have cheap CT 5 spoke 14" rims inbohggt off a buddy years ago so I can't offer much help. I have never had this issue. Never heard of anyone else having this issue either

I don't remember having the issue on the 14" rims on the old silver car. Seems it only happens with these 15" rims. Now I did buy them used, but they did come from a Yaris (it was in the driveway when I picked them up) and the owner said he was selling them cause he got aluminum rims (also on the car when I went) so can only assume (and was told) these are OEM steel rims.

I have the same problem with my car here in northern Minnesota. The first time I had the vibrations I thought something was seriously wrong with my car. The snow/ice always seems to work itself loose in a day or two, so I've never tried to do anything about it. FWIW, a warm car wash would probably help, I suppose.

We don't get that much snow in VA, but when we do I just kick the rear quarter panel a few times every time I get in or out of the car and most of it falls off.

Like you, I can't say I've had issue with my 14s. Sure I've had some, but not to the point were I've been driven to investigate it.

Yea Im talking about snow and ice packed inside the rim itself. I don't even remember having this problem on my old 300m with 16" steel winter rims. Perplexing for sure

Snow seem to build up on both side going through deep snow, otherwise I never had issues

IllusionX, what size rims are you running? Id imagine you'd have experience with snow being from PQ lol

I've also ran on 14x5 steel Honda rims and no issue with constant snow buildup.

It's also good to pull wheels and remove caked dirt from the backs before taking to the tire shop for mounting and/or balancing work.

100% or anytime a vibration is felt. Good thing to watch out for.

Sorry, somehow missed this post.

You'd think! I did! But you gotta go to a coin op. wash and stick the gun in every other hole and 'sweep' the inside of the rim. Needless to say you generally take a soaking and ends up running you $5 every time. Yea it's only $5...but this is Canada...it snows here....sometimes a lot! Hahaha

Heat the wheels up in the morning before you go out for the day!

Do you happen to park where the wind is blowing the snow into the wheel? I got that less with steel wheels, but every now and then it would happen if it was really windy.

I had this terrible on the factory 15" rims on front and back, had to pull wheels 2-3 times a winter and bang snow out, melt ice etc. then when the 15" tires were toast I got a deal on a set of 14" tires and wheels and grabbed them. have not had the issue since. I think the clearance on the calipers and drums is so small on the 14's that there is no space for the snow to collect, melt and re-freeze. the 15's have that .5" more for it to happen. It was bad though, you'd drive in a storm, park the car for the night, go out and drive the next day and the whole car would shake above 90KPH, almost knock your fillings out LOL.
