Hi All
Can anyone help what cleaner can be used to clean the MAF.
Is carbureter cleaner is suitable ?

Nope. Use MAF specific cleaner or electrical contact cleaner. Brake/Carb cleaners can leave behind a film on the sensor which will cause codes.

I would use only a cleaner that is specifically marked as "for MAFs". I do not want to take any risk. Therefore you should not user the suggested cleaner.

Yes, electrical contact cleaner is fine.

While it's "not recommended" many mechanics have been using brake cleaner and carb cleaner for years with no problems. I've used brake cleaner on more than a couple vehicles with no issues. All the aerosol cleaners are very similar to each other with most being a mix of highly volatile solvents and a propellant.

Which brake cleaner are they using? (High VOC or low VOC)

I've used brake cleaner for years to clean MAF. The VOC is irrelevant, just use what you got and make sure it doesn't leave a residue.

Doesn't the MAF sensor have to survive everything gaseous coming up from the crankcase and through under the valve cover?

We use the CRC MAF Sensor Cleaner. Although you can also use other brands of MAF Sensor cleaners, as well as, electrical contact cleaners.

No. The MAF is before the intersection where the crank case gases enter..

Buy a cheap OBDII scanner to clear the codes that you will get from "just use what ya got".

I still do not understand why someone would spray the brake cleaner on MAF sensor.
200ml MAF cleaner spray (by Liqui Moly) costs some 6 USD here, over the years I used it to clean 5 MAFs and one throttle body and there is still something remaining for further usage.
Which means it costs less than 1 USD to clean the MAF properly and risk-free.

Then what gets it dirty?

Then what gets it dirty? There are still fine particulates that get through an air filter. This very slowly over time accumulates on the fine wire in the maf.

Also, depending upon the MAF design one wire is heated, like a toaster element and can burn said particulates, which stick to it. This is why you don't want to clean the MAF with anything that leaves a residue. It will burn on too and give incorrect data.

To clarify, I meant use whatever brake cleaner you have as long as it doesn't leave a residue. It will not trigger codes.

The residues are often not visible and can be even more problematic after heating up. You can trust the statement on the can that says "leaves no residue" but bear in mind that these statements are always related to the primary usage of the spray which for brake cleaner means "leaves no residue that would have negative impact on brakes".

Just use the proper cleaner for what ever you're cleaning, in this case, the MAF sensor. So just buy a can of dedicated MAF sensor cleaner. Why bother risking any damage to the car by cheaping out and using what ever is laying around?

Some people are just cheap and or lazy. "Oh man, I have to get off my dead ass and drive all the way to the store and spend $5....Hmmm, I'll just soak this delicate electronic component that's the front end of essentially the whole fuel management process in that old rusty coffee can full of used paint brush cleaner that I have in sitting the corner of the garage. It will work fine."
The next post you will see is: "OMG!!! My car just inexplicably started throwing P0101 code. Please help!" Just watch.
