AWD and fuel economy

As I understand it (somebody please correct me if I'm wrong)- a person can disable the AWD function for whatever reason, using a button on the console.

My reason is fuel economy- whether it is a sensible proposition or not, I would like to test this theory when it isn't particularly icy or muddy.
The problem is, the few times I've tried it, within seconds, it automatically goes back to AWD. Is this normal, or is something wrong? Is there another way to disable it? Is it even possible, or is it by nature permanently on? Or on the other hand, does the car automatically give me 2WD when it isn't icy out there? Can someone please explain how it works?

What car are you talking about?

Most awd systems (not 4x4) are only used when needed as sensors calculate a plethora of data points when you're driving.

The excess fuel consumption issue in modern day awd systems typically come from the extra weight that comes with the extra parts needed ie: rear axles, differential, transfer case, drive shaft etc.

Meaning if you disable the system you won't notice much difference in fuel economy.

If you're talking about a Yaris in Canada, that's a traction control button, your car doesn't have AWD.

Try reading your owners manual.

thats the ECS and TCS off button which is electronic stability control and traction control system. its good or geting out of bogs or snow, or racing.

4WD/ AWD was a japan only option is is about 5 grand or more to import and is only an electromagnetic controlled 4wd (switches off at 25 mph) just like the Rav4.

yes I guess i forgot to mention, it's a Yaris. And yes the dash display says "trac off" when disengaged. I"m not sure what you're saying though, that I don't really have AWD?

Thanks everyone for weighing in. I do not have an owner's manual with this car. I was told it was AWD when I bought it, not sure what I feel about that since I obviously had mixed feelings about it.

I find that on some days this Yaris has much higher fuel consumption than my last Yaris, a 2006 (sometimes twice as much?) and I was told by a coworker that it might be due to AWD, but maybe just cold icy conditions itself is playing havoc with my consumption? Who knows. I'm a very very conservative driver BTW.

I consume about 9-10L/100km in the winter.

im gonna respond again because you are ignoring most of the people in the thread and have been lied too, he meant AWD as a joke, as in all the wheels move when it drives aka a salesman joke on AWD, get it ALL WHEELS DRIVE?

Assuming you have had this Yaris throughout winter - how have you not come.to realise it does not have awd? Ottawa has insane winters there had to be at least 1 tomemyoundrove through snow?

maybe he has blizzacks like i did cause i survived 3 blizzards on just snow tyres in my yaris and spun out only once.
