I have a chance to purchase my friends 08 wounded yaris(120000 miles). he was driving when temp light came on.. he kept driving 5 more miles and the car overheated and shut down. Towed home. Car will not start. I plan to do a compression test but assume the head gasket is blown and maybe worse. I'm a diy guy and have rebuilt engines before and can do my own machine work.

Is it worth digging into it or should I just opt for a good used engine??

It's a manual trans do I need to replace the engine from another manual trans car?

Are there any unusual things I should concern myself with completing the replacement engine swap?

What is the best manual to get for reference?

Thanks

head gaskets are easy on these cars and the engine can be left in place. That said you also need to remove the timing cover to remove the head which is a tight fit and who knows if the head was warped.

I would recommend getting a low mileage engine and swapping it in. You can buy either m/t or a/t engines it does not matter. There is a website online that has all factory repair manuals for about $20, I don't remember the name but I'm sure google can lead you to the right place

Thanks

I'm looking at engines on ebay. Whats up with the listings, they all spec a 5th digit in the engine number. What does that mean and what should I be looking for?

Thanks
