I have a 19 year old Yaris with a stick, but I'm going to invest in a good second hand car - automatic because my wife is a nervous driver and I think she'd gain confidence on the road if she didn't have to struggle with the gears.

Is the Yaris automatic held in high esteem? I want to stick with Toyota, and preferably Yaris. We live in the countryside so an occasional bane might be snow, but not often - live in Ireland, we've had maybe 3 heavy snows in ten years.

Many thanks...

The Yaris automatic is a brilliant little transmission with bulletproof reliability. It upshifts and downshifts smoothly and never hesitates or hunts for gears.

Thanks you, kimona, that's encouraging to know!

But you cant compare the 1,5 automatic sold in the states with the european versions.
Its a good old fashioned converter auto.

Because the 2nd gen is with MMT and 3gen with CVT here in europe with the 1,3 engine

The MMT has its issues, its a robot gear with automatic cluth, but try one.
CVT is automatic, with the behavior that CVT has.
My wife love it in the hybrid, and there is no problems with Toyotas CVT

The Toyota 'eCVT's' in their hybrids are pretty much bulletproof.

The normal push-belt design CVT's found in almost all non-hybrids CVT cars (including Toyotas), are Russian Roulette reliable at best. That has been the biggest problem with the 2014-2019 Corolla here in the U.S, & probably will be with the new 2019 Corolla hatch & 2020 sedan as well (even with the new launch gear design).

Thanks stykerdk! I'm thinking to get maybe a 3 or 4 year old car, at the oldest, but I'll bear in mind the differences here. I like the Yaris for it's compactness and nifty feel for either city or motorway drives. Cheers!

Nothing but good things to say about my 2010 Yaris automatic. Essentially zero problems going on 9 years of ownership. If I had it to do over again, the only thing I'd do differently is get a 5 door instead of a 3 door hatch and probably pick another color besides black. So hard to keep clean looking. Other than that, I love this little subcompact. It's a reliability superstar with loads of character.....
