Green deposits/leak from axle ?

Hey guys,

I was doing a routine front brake clean up and noticed on the driver side brakes, lot of green fluid and deposit around the caliper, axle joint and brake line. The passenger side brakes were clean. I’ve attached a few photos below. Anyone know what this is and how serious the issue is? I do plan to go to the mechanic soon but wanted your input

That is very clearly a torn/failing boot. That grease is a pain to clean up but depending how long it took to get that dirty, you might be able to put off an axle swap a little longer. I'd degrease and clean up everything thoroughly and then monitor it closely for a week of daily driving and see how it is after a week. If it's anywhere near that dirty again, that axle has to be swapped asap, if it's just a few globs of grease here and there then I'd say you have a few months before needing to do that job.
The job itself isn't too bad but you'll need a strong impact gun to get the axle nut off, the rest only requires hand tools and a jack and jack stands.

I have the same thing on my Yaris. I did my drivers side a few months ago as there was a small hole in the boot starting to leak grease. I was somewhat miffed when i found out the other one is also leaking as i was finishing up but i didn't have time to deal with it then.

Replacing the boot isn't to bad of a job. Although you have to drain the gearbox oil, get that big axle nut off and pop the lower ball joint out in order to free the axle and in order to get the wheel side off you have to take the gearbox end joint apart and get that off in order to get the wheel side one off.

Seems like something I would leave my mechanic to do. I’ll be sure to observe closely so I can attempt it myself next time
