I rarely use my car radio, including the DVD player, back in August of this year; after the radio not being used, not being used as in not being turned on for months, upon months, all the AM channels don't work.

I brought the car into the dealer, they simply just reset the battery, in hopes it would solve the problem; unfortunately it didn't, the AM radio continues not to work.

Recently I re-visited my dealer, this time, they unscrewed the antenna while the car was on, when the antenna was screwed back in the radio screen in the 2012 Yaris was red; rather then the default light yellow / white color.

What is going wrong, did someone, somewhere unscrew the antenna or shorten the radio; numerous guys at the dealer said it's, weird.

Do you have the touch screen radio ? Has someone stolen your aerial off the roof ?? Is the aerial tight ?

@bob225 - Not a touch screen radio, and the antenna is on the roof; although what if someone switched the antenna ?

Maybe not the same problem, but can you check that the antenna amplifier is getting power when you turn the radio on? There is an amplifier built in the antenna base, which gets power from the radio (I think it is a black wire in the radio harness from memory). If there is no power to the amplifier, or the amplifier has died, you will have no AM reception and poor FM receptfion.

My after market radio has an item in the setup menu that turns this on or off. If it is off, I have no AM reception, just some buzzing.

When you say antenna base, do you mean; the antenna on the top if the car ? This is for the factory CD AM/FM radio, not an after market.

Yes, the antenna base has an amplifier inside it that receives power from the radio. If the amplifier is faulty or is not receiving power, you will have no AM reception.
