Now I haven't done much searching on the topic but I made a cool little discovery (but for all I know this could be common knowlege).

The girlfriend needed a new car recently and I convinced her to buy a vibe or a martix (she didnt want a yaris haha).

So as with any new (to me) car, we giver the once over. Oil, filters, wipers, tire pressures, etc.

So it's an 04 matrix with the 1zz. The oil filter fits on our yaris but is slightly larger. Its the same price as the yaris filter at the toyota dealer.

The pennzoil filter is what was on the matrix. The tall filter is the oem 1zz matrix filter. The short black filter is the oem yaris filter.

I know the vw guys liked the larger mk3 diesel filter on the gas engines for better filtration. I figure this is the same idea. Just drove from Toronto to Ottawa with the 1zz filter on my 1nz and all is well.

Is there any benefit to having a larger filter?

Congrats on the new matrix. We have an 05 Vibe base with around 270k miles on it and it's still kicking (albeit pretty slowly) lol.

I can only assume more filter means better flow and less likelyhood of clogging? Also you would need more oil to compensate for the larger filter. Is there a real benefit? I dont know, but I don't think it hurts.

It technically has more filtering area (and thus should last longer in theory) but most people who swap filters will opt for larger ones simply for more capacity. As long as the threads are the same and the diameter of the oil seal is identical then it'll work fine.

I would think there is more heat transfer.
Doubt if there is enough for a readable difference,

Extra capacity is nice. Thanks for posting.

The longer filter hangs a little lower, below the protection area of the block, making it more susceptible to road debris and possible damage. Just something to be aware of.

But is still well above the bumper line on my 08 hatch back. If I hit something that takes the filter off, my bumper, rad, and support would be long gone anyway lol

Took me a while to figure out that you do not mean Hyundai Matrix but Toyota Corolla Verso 1.8 (ZNR11_) 95 kW.:bonk:
At least this looks like the European name. And it has 1ZZ engine.

Thanks for this tip - more oil in the system always mean slower degradation!:w00t:

My .02 is never use one of those K&N ones that are a complete PIA when changing your oil. Those are garbage in my experience.
