We just bought a 2014 Yaris 4-door, and it had the factory radio (see attached image).

I am not terribly pleased with the audio quality, and have been looking at aftermarket units. My dumb guy question is if I put in a replacement how much of an improvement can I expect in sound quality?

I've been looking at units in the 200$+ range, but I'm not sure if I would need to have the speakers replaced, too.

Thanks for any info/recommendations.....

Normally not much

But if you replace with a unit with high adjustability features (multi band eq, internal crossovers, and other adjustability features) you'd be surprised.

I have a kenwood excelon kdc-x990 and although very outdated, I was able to get better sound out of the stock speakers without using an amp... not that you would want to use an amp with the stock speakers anyway. I dont imagine they'd last very long if you did

You can keep the factory head unit and still get a more powerful sound.
This is the way...

Clarion had an amplifier that has everything built in, just hook it up.

Finally, change the speakers when you can. You will need them to handle the power from the amplifier,
and add a Subwoofer!
