Hello all, and welcome to the official JDM eyelids group buy order thread!

The Props
First of all, I would like to thank our fellow YarisWorld member Kenbow (http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/member.php?u=206). He is also a moderator for the venerable VitzListe website (http://www.k4.dion.ne.jp/%7Evitz/), which a few of you might already know about. He has graciously offered his help in bringing some nice eyelids to his fellow Yaris/Vitz fans in the west. :clap:

The Problem(s)
A few YW members (including myself) are in need of eyelids for our cars. While the JDM has had them for quite a while now, people in the western world haven't been so lucky in this area (a few less-than-flattering eyelids (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/TOYOTA-YARIS-VITZ-05-06-EYELIDS-EYEBROWS-EYE-LIDS-BROWS_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ38661QQihZ018QQit emZ280122417700QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW) have emerged lately, but that's pretty much it).
Another problem lies with the fact that we have no GB contacts for Canada, South-America, and/or Australia. This may be key to getting a good deal on these items, since shipping can (and very often does) get insanely expensive. If you would like to contribute in such a crucial and rewarding enterprise (for no monetary gain whatsoever unless somebody wants to donate to your cause, of course! -- just for the warm fuzzy feeling here, folks! :respekt:) let me know!The Solution
After much searching of the InterWeb, fellow member hhcchen (http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/member.php?u=18) found a site called SecondStage (http://www.rakuten.co.jp/secondstage/610273/659782/) that offered this elusive item. Alas, they refused to cater to costumers overseas, to the disappointment of many :thumbdown: . After asking around for a while, I found Kenbow and after a quick PM he agreed to serve as our GB contact in Japan, so this issue is now resolved! :thumbup:

The Rules (Suggestions for this section welcome)

The group buy will officially begin on Monday, June 11th
The item must be paid in full a before the deadline, which for now is set to July 20th (this date may change depending on various factors)
Payments will be made through PayPal only. This is mainly for speed/convenience, but also because it's easier to resolve disputes if a problem were to arise (knock on wood)
Members will need to make a decision on what they want before the deadline in order to prevent delays. We will not be made responsible if members change their mind after the order has been placed
JDM orders

Please keep in mind that we are just members and that we are doing this to help others out. We will be doing this out of our own time and we will not profit from it. If something is wrong with the shipment (i.e. a product is not what you ordered/is defective/is not an the exact color match), we will do what we can to help you out, but we cannot be made responsible if the seller screws up the order. Shipping quotes are TBD at a later date, since we have yet to get the quote from the seller. I will edit this post as soon as I have this information available

It has come to my attention (thanks eTiMaGo) that PayPal fees need to be considered as well. I will check this out with Kenbow, since apparently every country-specific PayPal account has a different rate when it comes to this. More info in the coming days!

Some of the color codes available may not be an exact match. If you would rather not risk it, we would suggest you get them unpainted and just color match them yourself.
We still require GB contacts in any of the destination countries. This helps out a bit with shipping charges. That sounds very cool! Where are you located? How much time does it take you to fabricate+paint a pair?

We haven't really set anything in stone with the SecondStage people yet, and the prices are a bit high...

nope... That area that it block is basically a reflecting area for the turn signal, so there's no negative effect of covering it.

Well, the only person who said that he might do CF was critical (http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/member.php?u=2990), and he hasn't replied yet, so who knows? :iono:

I'm putting you in the list for now... If we can get better prices from SecondStage/critical/someone else, I'll definitely let everybody know... We're at the feeler stage right now, so prices may change drastically in the future.

BTW, I'm open to other vendors as well as suggestions. The goal here after all is not to make money, but to spend as little of it on this mod as possible.

I'll certainly keep everyone posted as things develop.

I just wanted to let everyone know that I might have just found a guy locally that supposedly does great fiberglass (and maybe even CF) work. There's a chance I will probably meet him within the next few days. Since we're all interested in one specific model (so far anyway), I'm pretty sure he'll be able to keep the prices down. :thumbup:

The only issue then would be the paint matching. I might be able to get a guy at a Toyota shop do this for me, but I'm definitely not sure about this yet.

CF eyelids are better in my opinion.
Since we are dressing up cars for fun, I think CF lids (dark color) will stands out more and giving the set up closer to some face expressions.

If not CF, I am happy with the same body color. The more I mod/dress the car, the more I don't feel safe to leave it in public. :frown:

I just got back from meeting the fiberglass dude a few minutes ago. He showed me a few of his current projects (i.e. he made a Ferrari body for a VW sedan that's off the hook)... Suffice to say that he'll be able to fab up the eyelids with one hand tied behind his back.

So... We've got two choices, people: We can either go for the original JDM eyelids which cost a pretty penny (not including paypal fees + shipping it all from Japan), or we can get an exact replica of the item (including paint matching and 3M backing tape) for quite a lot less money. How much less? I'll run the numbers and let you know tomorrow!

This will depend on whether you guys decide to go for the expensive stuff or not. If you guys would rather go JDM, the payments would have to be made to Kenbow, who will in turn buy and ship everything to a contact in the US.

If you would rather save a big chunk of change and go for the quality replicas, your money would have to go to my PayPal account and I would do the distribution to said US contact.

I will also be in that batch, but only because I need a pair in order to make exact mockups over here. This fabricator will make a few more pair in order to sell them, so hopefully the JDM's will pay for themselves that way. :biggrin:

I apologize to everybody for the slow updates. I have yet to receive an update from Kenbow and/or SecondStage. I have just sent another e-mail to see if they'll actually have anything new for us.

The fabricator is coming in today to make the necessary measurements for the mold. He should be able to get back at me before this week is over with the prices.

It's simply that I'm having a hard time securing a deal with the store directly, so I'm now going to try using japanparts as an intermediary. I'm hoping they'll be able to buy the parts and ship them over here to us.

The molds didn't come out right on the first try. The guy will try to come back tomorrow (today) to try again with some other materials.

We're currently aiming to have the first batch ready in no more than 2 weeks. The big issue I'm having at the moment however is paint. I have to find a guy that works with these paint codes on a frequent basis. I'm thinking somebody at the dealership where I got my car from...

BTW, there are some questions that I would like to ask potential buyers:

Do you guys want me to sell you the eyelids with the glue/tape, or would you rather get it by yourselves?
Would you guys prefer the eyelids to stick to the headlights or the hood? (Different approaches are needed for each application)

Who is willing to be the GB recipient in the US? Please let me know

Quick update: Looks like the Type A molds are a go! I was told by the fabricator that the 1st pair should be done no later than wednesday! :thumbup:

As far as CF and/or Type B eyelids, they may have to be a bit more expensive to cover the cost involved in making just one or two pair. Plus they may take longer to make. If you guys are cool with that, then let me know.

On that same note, I'm thinking about making different designs for you guys. So far, I've found some eyelids made by Black Yaris (http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/member.php?u=1613). He fabbed these using vinyl, but the final design would also be done in fiberglass and color matched accordingly.

A is for Awesome FTW... They fit perfectly in the edge lines of the hood, almost a factory look. Black Yaris's style is perhaps a more aggressive design but IMO does not suit the car as well.

I am heading to a local DuPont store tomorrow to attempt to get color-matched eyelids for everybody that is on the list. I'm hoping that the color codes alone might be enough to get an exact match. :iono:

I came back a few hours ago after a glimpse at the first pair of eyelids. They still need to be cut to specs and cleaned up, but they fit the car almost perfectly as it is right now! :thumbup:

We added reinforcements to the eyelids at the sides, so that they can be pasted on the area that's right below the hood. The guy did a pretty bang up job! He says he'll have at least 3 pairs ready by Friday.

I didn't take pictures since I was already out of my house by the time I got the call to meet him, but I promise to take a few shots of the prepped eyelids ASAP. I will also be posting prices for these babies as well (but expect to pay somewhere in the vicinity of $60-$80 this time around).

Sorry for the slow update fellas! Plans have changed a bit because of my accident. The good news is that I will most likely be getting the first 3 pairs later today, although they still need to be painted (and possibly fitted as well).

I also can't make other molds until my car gets back from the shop, so my apologies to the guys that want other models. I promise to get it done once that's straightened out.

Great news everybody! I have finally secured official Toyota paint for all eyelids! I might color match using that paint in future batches, so consider this a nice bonus for being so patient. :thumbsup:

No additional pics yet, but I'm sure you won't be disappointed when you do see them.

In related news, it looks like all of the paint codes matched except for Black, which apparently is 202 instead of 209. The guy promised me it would be an exact match to USDM specs, but I wanted to let you guys know nonetheless.

One more thing: I am currently making molds for the BlackYaris model, which I will be adding to the main list soon. Let me know if you're interested in these in order to make extra sets!

BTW, I saw a sedan parked at the mall and had a good chance to see the headlights up close. The "curve" that the hatchback design takes advantage of is very small in this version, so I'm wondering: How do you sedan guys want your eyelids to look? An LB-like model is possible, but not as nice-looking IMO.

Exactly. And unfortunately, we're not going to be able to meet it this time. :frown:
More bad news...
Looks like the paint guy fell through with his promise, and now I'm going to have to pay the full retail price on the paint, which leaves me with 3 options:
Pay $18 for an 1/8th of an ounce worth of Toyota paint (enough for about 2 coats/pair)
Pay $18 for each requested color and use that for color matching at a DuPont store
Ask you guys for your hitch bumper covers (the little circles in the front) in order to color match those. You could send those rushed in an envelope and it should still be pretty inexpensive to do.

I will go to the dealership 1st thing tomorrow to see if I can resolve the situation with as little money spent as possible. I feel bad that I already promised you guys OEM paint, although I've been assured that the colors will match 100%. Even then, I believe you guys should decide as to what to do next.


More good news!
The improved version of the eyelids is much better than before. The fabricator made a better mold this time around, and it really makes the eyelids much thinner, which makes them fit flush with the hood, as well as the headlights
I asked them to reinforce the eyelids at the "backbone" (the inner border of the eyelids). This improves on the original JDMs, which are just pasted on top of the headlights I will post pictures tomorrow of the new lids. I am confident that you guys will like the results so far.

As far as the original JDM group buy, there's not a lot to talk about to tell you the truth. The VitzListe fellow has not contacted me at all in a loooong time. JapanParts is also AWOL, and the recent events (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/4155026.stm) will most likely make things even worse.

OK: Here are a couple of pictures of an unpainted eyelid, although they really don't do the eyelids much justice (again, sorry for the crappy quality, but my digital camera ran out of batteries).

Notice the reinforcement on the inside border? That will help out a lot in keeping the lids in place. This is something that I noticed the JDMs don't have at all.

Also, compare these new lids to the original pictures. The width in these is much better, since they will perfectly level to the hood.

The black line is there to define where the cut is going to be. Tomorrow is my last trip to the dealership in order to get the cuts just right, as well as get the paint samples.

Yes, I found another dude in charge of paint, and he is willing to give me some samples in order to match them. This should all be over with tomorrow.

If you guys still prefer to have them unpainted, please PM me to let me know. otherwise, I will continue to follow the list as planned.

I believe the best way to handle this is PayPal, since they really are a pretty good middleman when it comes to online transactions.
