I recently got a used 2008 Yaris 3d hatchback and the AC doesn't really work.
It blows air yes but even at maxing the knob to the coldest, no cold air is felt.
[Found out my Yaris doesn't have an AC system]

At the shop I work at we normally start by drawing out the freon to measure what was in there. Then we put the correct amount back in to see if it works well. Then we check for leaks, the freon has dye in it. The customer might have to drive it for a week and come back to check for leaks.
One thing you can do is look for oily spots on hoses or damage to the condenser, which is out in front of the rad.

Should the car be running as I look for oily spots or damage to the condenser?

Are you the DIY type? I picked up a vacuum pump and A/C manifold gauges on eBay for around $120.00. I had never touched A/C before and I replaced my condensor and A/C compressor, replaced a few o-rings, evacuated the system and recharged. It was not difficult. I've vacuumed and refilled friends' A/C systems. Here are a few diagrams that could help you diagnose your issue if you do go DIY.
This is specific to the Yaris:

The next is generic in nature:

I realized this Yaris doesn't have an AC compressor and therefore doesn't have any sort of AC system. I'll make a new post later about installing one...

A 2008 model. You'll spend more installing everything you need than the car is worth.
