You might remember I saw a new two door F1 50 pick up truck at my local Ford dealer for $26,400 before taxes. It didn’t work out.

But wait! There’s a two door F150 2010 model for sale at a used car place with 50,000 miles on it for $10,900. I looked at it today. It’s been well-maintained. Interior is perfect. Mechanically the ABS light is on and there’s a noise that sounds like a wheel bearing. A Toyota it ain’t! But they say they’re going to fix everything this weekend and if so I will look at the truck Monday and probably buy it.

I have a 2007 F150, regular cab short bed with a 5 speed. I love it.

I like it so much that I store it for winter to keep its immaculate rust free panels and undercarriage away from salt. It's got the slow, but durable as hell 4.2L Essex. Been a great truck though. Its only needed a coil pack and general maintenance.

Those 4.6L 3 valves are good engines, just stay ontop of your oil changes and it'll be a durable truck for you

Saw the truck. It has problems. Needs work on the ABS. Above 30 miles an hour it makes a noise the mechanic at the store calls a wheel bearing. Doesn’t sound like a wheel bearing to me is the noise doesn’t change When cornering.

Otherwise the truck is In like new condition.

This is going to take a while to resolve

I’d like to get your thoughts on the situation if you have experience with something like this.

I’m thinking the noise above 30 miles an hour is not a wheel bearing. Wheelbearings make noise when you go around corners. I’m thinking the noise has something to do with the ABS light There must be some ABS hardware which has come loose and is making a noise.

I’ve checked on car gurus and this truck is in very low priced considering the mileage and the condition. If I can resolve the ABS light and the noise I’ll buy it. But I would hate to be rely on a mechanic And pay a mechanic to fix it. I Parkinson’s means I can’t do the work.

I’d stay away from that truck. There is a reason it is priced low, because it has a problem they can’t resolve.

bronsin
11-08-2020, 01:43 PM
I think you are right about the price being low because of the problem. But you should see the condition of the truck it’s in great shape except for the problem.

The problem is an opportunity if you can solve it.

Of course it’s also And opportunity to fail. :bonk:

You know I just thought of some thing. This truck comes with a 50-50 warranty. You pay half seller pays half for repairs.

It’s in outstanding shape other than the ABS light and the noise over 30 miles an hour

I’ll have to have a talk tomorrow with the owner of the store...

Looks like a nice truck. Simply, buy it if they fix the ABS light and noise. You'll know when you go for your next test drive. It's difficult to disguise noises like you mention, especially of you give it a good run and put it through its paces. The "Buy Here Pay Here" purchase disclaimer seems strange to me. Is that a common sales approach where you live?

I wouldn’t really know this might be the second time I’ve ever looked at a used car on a used car lot!

Dealer called today. They tried installing a rebuilt ABS module but it didn’t work. They are ordering a new one from the dealer and that will be in in 7 to 10 days.

I won’t take delivery of the truck until it’s fixed. The deal is they fix the truck, I drive it and put my scan tool on it. Then I pay them and then take the truck.

Who knows what will happen but it looks like this is going to be a lose for the dealer and a win for me!

I would suggest a thorough pre-purchase inspection at a Ford dealership. It's certainly worth approximately $100. Any reputable used car dealership will agree to this inspection. If they hesitate, then pass on the car.

Good advice. I might just take the car there well they are waiting for the ABS module

That is great advice from Kimona. I insisted that Dodge do a very thorough inspection - including test drive - on the 2013 Chrysler Town and Country Limited that I just bought. I purchased it from a local Toyota dealer where it was a trade-in. For $49.00 Dodge road tested it, checked the level and condition of the transmission fluid, coolant, all other fluids, all suspension, driveline components, brakes, all electronic systems etc. A very thorough inspection. When I called them to arrange the inspection, as I was thinking of buying the van, they asked if there was anything else I'd like checked. I asked them to be super critical and thorough. I also asked them to run a scan for any codes. All this for $49.00 - amazing. They reported back a van in excellent condition, needing only rear brakes and tires before long. So, IMO, follow Kimona's advice and have Ford do a full inspection - and ask them to check condition of all fluids for condition and level.

Another thing...these dealers buy used vehicles for pennies on the dollar. They have headroom to play with , but...they really want to make a sale. I flip things on their head. Make them know I'm interested, but also that I'm prepared to walk away if I don't get the deal I want. I don't ever lowball them, but I always give good reasons for the price reductions I ask for. In most cases I get a decent deal and they make some decent bucks, but maybe more importantly, from their perspective, they clear a space in the lot for more inventory. Finally, do research on the vehicle you're considering buying. Know more than they do, which in most cases isn't hard. If you go in knowing what you're talking about, you can have the upper hand. It really is an interesting interplay and psychology. Many people hate buying cars, used or otherwise. I've always enjoyed the experience.

In this case however this used car dealer has made a mistake. They should’ve fix the car and then sold it They get $10,000 for a car like this with over 100,000 miles on it. This one has 55,000 miles.

They must know that. I’m wondering what’s going on here

Good news everyone! ( remember future Rama? )

The car dealer called and they found the problem and fixed it. The noise was not a wheel bearing but something to do with the ABS sensor on the right wheel. A new wheel bearing for an F1 50 is five to $600. That wasn’t it. Neither was the ABS module bad it was the sensor on the right front wheel. A relatively cheap fix.

So tomorrow I will go and test drive the truck and put my blue driver scan tool on it. If all goes well I get to get the truck!

NoW that I have the truck there are some things I have to do

I ordered new Velcro so I can put the old easy pass on the windshield.

The black plastic grill in front is cracked on the left-hand side so I’m going to get some harbor freight Apoxsee and see how good that will fix it and follow up with some black duct tape. A new grill can be had for about $125 but I don’t think so at this point.

One of the tire pressure sensors is bad or at least the area code comes up on the dash. The store said it would clear up. I’ll have to see what can be done about that without taking it to the shop.

The front two tires are barely legal and I was thinking of getting some new ones at tire discounters. But then I thought no that would be about $300. I’ll do it in six months nothing bad happens to the truck. If I do get new tires they can also fix the tire pressure sensor.

The coolant in the kids tank looks kind of shitty. I have 2 gallons of xerox for the police car which I never used because it was too hard to do. I’ll do some research and see what’s involved in changing it on the truck.

Sounds like you're ready to get down to work. Couldn't you find a set of used tires with good tread on local classifieds? I buy used tires fairly often and there are some great deals to be had. Some people sell their tires after they are much less than half worn.

I’ll check it out! I want to wait on the tires in any case to make sure the truck doesn’t die or something so that will give me time to check out the classifieds.

Thanks for the idea!

Makes sense. No problem. Another thought... If you buy tires on steel wheels you have several advantages: 1) you know the tires are in great shape because they are inflated. You can check for broken belts etc. 2) You have a dedicated set of winter wheels. 3) You save your nice alloys from the horrible corrosion associated with road salt and sand. Then again, maybe you're looking to run all-seasons year round. You live in New Jersey? I'd definitely be looking at a dedicated set winter wheels and tires, for safety as well as to protect your factory alloys.

This truck is going to get maybe 1000 miles a year on it and I won’t be driving in snowy weather at all. Having said that when I get new tires for the rear they’ll be snow tires probably. That’s what’s on there now and they’re more than half worn out. But I will do for bad weather is figure out a way to get weight far back in the bed since it’s not four-wheel-drive.

Who knows maybe I will drive in snow?

Another thing I have to do is something I learned from YouTube. There’s no gas cap on this vehicle. It relies on the mechanism in the filler And the spring loaded door to seal and keep dirt out. So it’s important to keep the gasket that seals the door clean and lubricated with WD-40. you want to give internal mechanism a shot of WD 40 also fromTime to Time

It looks like I’m going to have to change the oil filter to a Motorcraft one. The engine is rattling for a few seconds after cold start up. I had this problem with the Subaru years ago. If you used a fram oil filter the engine would rattle on start up. You had to use a real Subaru one.

The engine didn’t rattle at the dealer before they change the oil. I Cold started it twice without the rattle so I’m pretty sure it’s the oil filter. I’ll have to get the truck up on ramps today and see how easy it is to get the filter Off.

bronsin

I tried to get the oil filter off yesterday but it was too tight. Got the truck up on ramps though which was good. There is an air dam I have to remove someday to 17 mm bolts.

Made an appointment for Friday morning at the local Sunoco station to remove the oil filter and put the one I got from Amazon on. They’ve done stuff like this for me before when I couldn’t do it.

Yeah, some places/people overtighten them. I guess they feel that hand tight isn't enough.

If you were a professional mechanic you wouldn’t want one of the filter to leak. That would ruin your reputation!

I think only the general public would hand tighten it so it comes off easily.

Got the oil filter changed at the Sunoco station this morning $10.

I’ll find out tomorrow morning when I start the engine if the rattle goes away.

Now All I have to do is figure out how to get the dipstick out to check the oil level. I’m thinking a stool I can standdown will work.

The new oil filter didn’t stop the coldstart rattle, but it seems less. Further research indicates some Engines do this since new. That’s what I’m going with for now!

Now I’m going to concentrate on getting the bed cover removed or at least tied up at the front of the bed.

Not this time. It’s a hydraulic cam tensioner that bleeds out overnight and the chain rattles until it pumps up in the morning.

$1700 to fix it it according to Ford.

People say on YouTube it’ll do it for 100,000 miles. That’s what I’m going to believe!

The F1 50 update.

I’m waiting to get the registration title and plates from the used car dealer I bought the truck from. It’s been a month and a temporary registration runs out Saturday. I called the salesman he said it might take 60 days but with the way Cove it has affected the DMV.

In the meantime I’m trying to figure out how I will check the oil. I can’t reach the dipstick no way. I tried buying an 11 inch high folding stool from Amazon to stand on but that didn’t work. I guess I’ll have to have them check the oil at the gas station.

I am ready to put the plates on when they come. I bought an electric screwdriver from Harbor freight which works great. With the Parkinson’s I don’t have enough dexterity in my hands to use a screwdriver to attach the plates.

It seems like a nice truck you have there. My brother acquired a Ford
F-350 last year, and he's planning to use it to haul his ATV. He bought it pre-owned and has been working on its modification for the past months. The last time I saw it, he's installing dually wheels (https://4wheelonline.com/DuallyWheels.47723) to it before the holidays.
