I just purchased a used 2008 Yaris with 85,750 miles.
In order to get into 1st gear I have to press the clutch pedal all the way to the bottom of the floor. 2nd a little better, 4 and 5th only half way down. Is this normal or do I have a problem? Any way to avoid the 1st pressing to the bottom of the floor? Appreciate any advise.

Check the fluid in the clutch master cylinder, maybe you have a leak.

It may be possible you have air in the lines and need to bleed. If there is air, each time you press the clutch, the hydraulic pressure temporarily increases. What happens if you sit in car and just repeatedly press the clutch? Does it get stiffer?

Thanks for the suggestions. I just tested the clutch pedal response and it seem to be always the same. One problem I have is when starting the car I have to push the clutch pedal to what seems the floor and it does not seem to close the safety switch to turn on the engine. I have to press it several times and it finally catches. When I did the pedal test this morning it seems that I was able to get into 1st gear without pushing the pedal to far down. I suspect that since I have to push the pedal down so far when starting I may be pushing it to far down when shifting into 1 gear. Haven't tested it yet since I only drive twice a week.

Definitely. However it won’t take as much travel to change the higher gears.

I think your clutch system is fine.

However I recommend bleeding once a year

I don’t know how many posts I saw when I was riding my motorcycle that went like this quote I am in Alaska and my transmission won’t shift what’s wrong“

Your clutch Needs to be bled that’s what’s wrong!

The Yaris had a pretty dismal manual driving experience (versus most other cars) prior to the 2015 refresh (which also improved the clutch design).

What did they change in the 15+ cars? I have a '14 and it has the infamous clutch chatter/shudder when its cool and/or damp out. Its infuriating.

It has to do with the throttle response of the drive by wire throttle. The old cable actuated throttles were much smoother, by the way 2001 Echo.

I'm not exactly sure what was changed when they revised the Yaris clutch starting with the 2015 refresh, but my 2015 SE 5-MT was comparable to all the Honda 5-MT cars that I have driven over the years. No complaints or anything.

Sorry for the late update. A fried of mine looked at the situation and found the problem. The previous owner had put in a floor mat with a hump near the pedals. After he took away the mat there was no problem.
