08 Yaris hatch, just checked battery at 14.4V
turn the key, fast clicking but no start

Do these cars have voltage regulator that can be replaced or is it likely the starter or something else?

thanks

When you checked the battery did you just touch your meter to the terminals. Disconnect the battery cables and clean them with a terminal and post cleaning tool. Any auto parts store should stock one cheap. Start with that. Also check the connection from the battery to the alternator to make sure it is not corroded. Make sure to disconnect the positive battery cable before doing this. The clicking sound usually indicates the relay isn't getting sufficient power.

I know you checked the voltage, but did you try jumping it?

Could be a bad starter solenoid. You won't know unless you check the voltage drop at the solenoid post, battery connection at solenoid. Try jumping the solenoid to see if that works.

Hold in coil inside solenoid could be damaged
Solenoid battery connections corroded or loose
Internal solenoid connections corroded
Battery connections corroded or loose
Starter shorted
Starter high resistance
Starter open circuit

Could be many things, best to check everything with a multimeter and get familiar with voltage drop testing

It was the battery. Replaced with WalMart Everlast, perfect fit, good warranty,
and relatively cheap.

Mercedes has a very inexpensive voltage regulator made by Bosch that is relatively easy to replace, often failing at 60K miles...
