brake line leak

I had a line rust out and it started leaking on our 09 hatch, the line is mostly coated except the last bit where the tube nut is. Why did they do that? I'm pretty sure I put a little grease on that section a year or two ago, I guess I was too late. This picture is similar to what Toyota does, not coating all the way. I fixed it up with a 4' section and cut off the coating to flare the lines up at a union.

I'm assuming this is a rear line entering the cylinder?

I had a similar issue a couple years ago where it wasn't leaking yet but looked like it would start. I ended up reacting that whole rear section with a line I made myself out if NiCop line. Bever have to worry about it rusting again.

The coating or lack there of may have something to do with the bends in that area.

Thats a generic picture. My gripe is I shouldn't have to replace those lines for rust.

How old is your Yaris?

Assuming it is around 10+ years old, having to replace an easily made generic line isn't a big deal it sucks, sure, and possibly a design flaw by Toyota, but is a fairly straight forward diy or relatively inexpensive at any shop.

If your Yaris is otherwise ticking along strong, then you're in good shape.

Yeah, it's a 2009. I stripped back the coating and spliced in at the straight section. Luckily the bleeders came loose. Pretty easy repair. I also found a rear shock leaking. Next on the list I guess. TPMS sensors this summer.

How are you flaring steel line? I can sort of manage 3/16 but it's hit or miss. Nickel copper steel line is so much easier, the cost difference is so negligible i always use that for new lines. I do try to save as much old line as possible though, but I'm never trying to flare steel above 3/16 again

I have a hydra flaring tool, but any regular flaring tool should do double flares on the old like ok. Just get the line sticking out just right, use the die as a gauge.
