Basic 2006 keyed model

I turn the key and the car acts as it has a dead battery. No lights no dings no attempts to start.
I will turn the key back, and then to start again, and nothing happens

I will repeat this until it actually connects and then it starts no problem

I dont think it's a poor battery connection because the lights would still come on and it would ding at me. Plus then why would it all of a sudden start flawlessly as if suddenly the battery was max charge?

Personal theory is that the key mechanism in the steering wheel is broken.
But I am no mechanic. Any thoughts? Thx for your time people!

Your symptoms do sound like possible corrosion on the battery terminals. While you may "think" the connections are good, for the minimal time/effort to clean the posts and clamps, I would certainly undertake that as a first step.

A bad ignition switch is certainly a possibility. Why don’t you have it changed and report back?

start by cleaning the battery terminals, thats always #1 when it comes to electrical faults, #2 is, how old is the battery and what condition is it in....the yaris has an odd setup with a semi auto start feature and if the battery is weak it just doesnt bother to try

if both #1 and #2 check out, then yes the ignition switch itself is the next in line to check/test....the other option would be a transponder/antitheft if equiped..itcould be weak and do the same thing
