View Full Version : Is a bike or a car better?

According to leather stand (https://www.leatherstand.com/), The maintenance of a bike is cheaper than the maintenance of a car. Whether it is servicing or upkeep, a car is costlier to maintain than a bike. Car parts are also more expensive than their two-wheeled counterparts.

If I could ride a bicycle, I would never have a car!

Convenience of a car makes the higher maintenance well worth it, period. Plus riding a bicycle in shitty weather sucks. I have a RadMission 1 E-bike and Ive put 120 miles on it in 2 years lol, Its mostly a toy/occasional commuter.

There are many reasons not to have a car.
Registration, insurance, inspection; they are mandatory even if you don't drive the car.
If you're in a large city that don't have private parking , you would have to pay for parking when car is not even in use.
I've been commuting with bicycles for over three decades, but I will own cars because my resident I have my own driveway and garage.
I live part time in NYC, when I commute by bicycles during the weekdays.
I ride against traffic flow, through parks, cut through traffic.. most of the time it take less time to get to my destination than driving.
And I don't pay for parking.
Only when I need to transport large volume of items that I drive my car.

So you're the guy that took my left lane on the Brooklyn Bridge!

I just stopped to take the picture, about 3 ft. above the road surface.
I ride where ever there is room to get by, opposite to one-way traffic, through the park on sidewalk if necessary.
I'm in Brooklyn, not fussy about where you ride.

The designated bike lane is separated from pedestrian traffic on the bridge, it's far less crowded these days.

I recently got a ebike, too.. cashed in all my CC rebated from busissnes purchases.
The ebike was just about free.
750w hub motor, dual battery totaling 32Ah, makes carrying large volume & weight much easier.

Back in the 80s and 90s I was riding 5000+ miles a year. By 1998 my bicycle had almost 100,000 miles on it.

But I see you live in Canada so I guess 120 miles is understandable. Sort of.

When I see people who are 40 years old and riding electric bicycles I just shake my head. What the hell is the world coming to!?

What's wrong with electric bikes? They're fun.

Yes they are fun. I had an electric scooter the kind like a skateboard but with a handle. It worked for about three months and it broke. I used it to ride to the train station to catch the train 6 miles to work. Then I would ride to work and ride around the big shoebox building I worked in. It folded up. This was a long time ago, long before the current use of electric scooters.

The problem is I see it is the operator loses the benefit of physical activity. 21 speed mountain bike can handle any terrain any physical situation. I suppose if you had an electric bicycle instead of a car like the three wheelers I see I could see that. But just as a fun thing to do you’re being cheated out of physical exercise. If you wanna get high forget drugs and alcohol. Exercise gives you natural chemicals to stimulate the mind and body. I had a friend who smoke a lot of pot. He was gifted mathematically. One day he was out with his friends and took all his clothes off and ran around naked. Reefer madness! Another childhood friend drank himself to death 33 years old. If they exercised instead of doing drugs and alcohol that probably wouldn’t have happened. E bikes aren’t drugs but they rob you of the benefits of exercise. Depend on your body in excellent physical condition. That’s priceless.

I've worked on & off in bike shops since my teen's.
I see ebikes are great for those that lack mobility & confidence to ride a regular bicycle on their own.
The electric motor assist allow most people who have feared to venture out on their on with their regular bicycles to have help on hills, maybe if they actually enjoy cycling they would ride more.
Just having more bikes or ebikes out on public roads make drivers more aware of bike traffic and drive more carefully.
Here in the US, we are still far from bike & ebikes reducing the number of car & trucks on the roads; but making cycling easier for the masses sure help in participation in cycling.

Here in NYC metro, car insurance cost a premium,
finding free parking spaces can be a big challenge sometimes,
gridlock traffic is not uncommon, riding an ebike can avoid all that.

Bicycle delivery folks operate 24/7, in all weather, and the ebikes they use are not expensive or high end ebikes.
They are just workhorses that need to take a beating and keeps on ticking; since how much $$ they make depends on their bikes.
Granted that traffic laws are not always followed,
cycling through parks, sidewalks or against traffic flow on onw-way streets are not uncommon. I guess that's all part of survival among cars & traffic in a big city without a car.

Having been a bicyclist and a motorcyclist, I’m in a complete agreement with you! The only excuse I can get for a bicyclist is you can hear much better than someone in a car. And see a lot better to! But bicyclists run red lights, stop signs and split lanes. :eek:so do motorcyclists! I was riding my GS 1000 BMW in bumper to bumper traffic on a three lane interstate going 75 miles an hour. I was pretty scared. Then two guys on Hayabusa‘s lane split is going about 100 miles an hour! They had full face helmet on, Bikini, tank tops, shorts, and flip-flops! They missed my right elbow by about 2 feet.

There are idiots everywhere.
You can have regulations out the wazoo and people still act like idiots to endanger themselves and others.
Just like guns don't kill people, more laws, more regulations don't prevent gun violence, right?

as someone whos been riding motorcycles just as long as i could ride a bycicle(1980)...ive less "trust" issues with someone on motorcycle than i do with someone on anything else

yeah theres stupid everywhere ..but all the modern "electric" transportation devices has made things crazy out there to a whole new level

Bicycle is also good for mental health! It gets those natural chemicals, adrenaline, and I can’t remember what else going! If you want to get high, ride a bicycle!

2003 was my last five borough bike tour. I blew a disc in my neck in June and that was it for riding a bicycle.

In 2002 at the start I saw Hillary Clinton and Schumer on the Dias with the mayor and the governor and all those sorts of people. As they rode past the dignitaries people were calling out names of the cities where they were from. San Francisco, Sydney, Berlin. So I called out Cobleskill. Hillary turned to Chuck and said “what’s Cobleskill?“ Schumer said “That’s a small town in upstate New York”

I think my last Bike NY, the Twin Towers were still standing.

I remember watching 4th July fireworks from 70th floor of one tower when I was little.

So, after a 20 year gap, I have just got myself a bicycle again.

Alloy frame dual suspension mountain bike that had been sitting unused for a number of years, and was in need of some TLC.

I have freed up the stuck cables and derailleurs, fitted new tyres and tubes and begun cleaning the rust and corrosion. Also need to dismantle the front forks and get the suspension working.

Why? Because my 25 year old son now takes the Yaris to work 4 days a week, and the wife takes the Mazda CX-30 to work, leaving me to walk or take public transport. I am retired, and could do with the exercise....

That’s awesome, A! When I traveled to Vietnam through https://gowithguide.com/vietnam I loved exploring off the beaten path on a bike too. We rode through the Mekong and even combined it with kayaking—it was such a unique experience. Definitely made me appreciate bikes even more!
