View Full Version : Should I buy new wheels as well?

I have a '07 Yaris Sedan, at least one of my wheels has a small bent, which may let out some air but it's not too significant. If I did decide to buy wheels than should I upgrade to a bigger size like 16/17?

My car has about 170,000+ miles. My tires are going on 9 years old so it's definitely time for new tires but deciding on wheels. It's nice to have nice wheels for once if it doesn't cost too much more.

tires over 5 years old are actualy no longer DOT compliant, and in many cases no longer safe ...atleast at higher speeds

as far as a size change goes, idealy you need to stay "light" and only go as big as you have to personaly i wouldnt put on anything bigger than a 15, and actualy prefer my 14's with a 195 60 14

if you bent a wheel.....then that tells me you drive on questionable roads and need all the sidewall you can get to protect the wheels from getting bent, which means 14's

Yeah concerned about my safety with 5+ year old tires.

I currently have 15' and will probably stick to that if I don't choose to go bigger.

My area is ok, bought this car used so who knows where it was before.

Also what does 38mm vs 45mm offset mean on wheels?

thats all about how much the "centerline" of the wheel is pushed or pulled off center IE deep dish vs shallow

not knowing what tires your running i would however reccomend going to a 195 or 205 in width...makes the car a whole lot more grippy in the corners and less slippy in the wet and a lil extra width wont toss on any weight

Sh0rtlife is right 195/50r15 and you will be happy as, I bought bfgoodrich advantage t/a sports 2 years ago for mine in that size and it changed the whole car for the better. Lots of grip and she doesn't want to spin the wheels from take off in the rain unless I give her to much ketchup

imo anything wider than a 195 on these cars....unless youve got some serious engine mods...is right on the edge of the most tire it can physically use, its neerly un spinable if you get a sticky one..but even a budget cheepo will not spin in the dry

as far as 16 17 and up..your just adding un needed weight in the WORST possible place to add weight to a car with 100hp....if you really have to go big for your own aesthetics make sure its an ultralight wheel

I always ran 205/50/16's on lightweight wheels on stock suspension on both my Yaris. I think it was the ideal set-up for great handling and appearance. Don't run an aggressive tread if you want good straight-line tracking at high speeds with this little car. Look for a continuous centre rib tread design.

the center rib is a good call generaly, i dont think my quatrac5's have it but good god are they sticky...wet, dry..amazing stuff and neerly as good as a set of blizzaks in freezing rain ice packs

15" tires are quite a lot cheaper and lighter than 16" tho and give you little bit lower gear ratio. Tire prices and the fact that every tire shop stocks the 15's and not the 16's sells it for me. I used to run 16's on my old Lantis type R and the 16's were more expensive then the 17's in same tire.

Those wheels do look fire tho.

wrong...also weirdly enough...assuming you have various wheels you can often go up a wheel size and save a few bucks on rubber just because its a more popular size so its cheeper.....its one of the reasons im on 195s and not 205s the 205s jump the price 50$ a tire, unless i went to a 15 and then they would be 10$ cheeper a tire in a 205...the 205/50/15 is VERY common around the world thus making it cheeper..where the 196/60/14 is also common its just becomeing "less" common in "cheep" tires..when you get into performance based rubber, they are both very similaryly popular due to vintage cars

13, 14, 15, 16, 17..makes no differance on "gear ratio" and neither does 175, 185, 195, 205 etc

its all about the middle number IE 195/"60"/14..60% of the width"195" is the total height of the tire..thats why the middle number is called the aspect ratio
195/60/14=23.2
175/70/14=23.6
225/45/15=23......way wide but still the same ratio
195/55/15=23.4
295/35/15.....10 inches wide but still the right height for the ratio LOL
205/45/16=23.3
196/40/17=23.1

Whats wrong? 16's cost more than 15's and 17's.

I never said the width changes the gear ratio. My cars speedo sensor was tuned for 17" factory allows and with my current 15's the speedo is reading just under the correct speed which means I have lowered the final drive ratio of the gearbox. At 100kph on the speedo the roadside speed display signs show me at 94-96kph.

17" made the car feel even more gutless down low and a little more floaty feeling.

Personally I use this calculator instead:
https://www.wheel-size.com/calc/

Not only does it show the tire size, it also shows necessary offset.
What I didn't see mentioned are the supposed stock wheel/tire sizes of 175/65/R14 = 23 and 185/60R15 = 23.7

I discovered that there are two different speed sensor gears, mine has the one for 175/65/14, so my 185/60R15 tires makes my car go faster than what's indicated on the gauge cluster.
Use the calculator provided to get to the closest stock tire size. If you want to get better gas mileage, get a bigger diameter wheel/tire combo. For acceleration, smaller diameter.

If i remember correctly the car had its ECU changed to suit the wheels at factory. With the right scan tool i was lead to believe you can change the speedo to suit the new wheel size. Could be wrong with the yaris tho but i know other cars you can do this.

Finding 16" performance tires under 24 inches is a pain. Took me quite a while to find a tire shop that could get me BFGoodrich Comp-2s in 205/45/R16. I'd consider going to 15s if I could find a set of 15x7 Enkei RP01/02s with +35mm offset. I currently have 16x7 +40 RP02s and love them.

Are 215/45/R16 too wide for you? They're closer to 185/60/R15 in diameter than the 205/45/R16 that you have.

Very hard to find, Tirerack only sells 3 different tires in that size. Or else I would prefer 215/45/16

Yes very limited, but I found 5 in my zip code. Maybe try a different zip code?

Actually, it’s not my ECU/ECM, because I have a smart ODB gauge plugged in, which I can adjust the speed it displays, but I have it set to 100% and the speed it displays is accurate when compared to my GPS and the speed RADAR that I pass by on the way to work.

My obd2 display shows same as my speedo is reading, I have the JDM RS vitz dash installed that did not come with the car and I changed that second day I owned it so this could also be why mines a bit off.

What do you guys think about Goodyear Assurance All-Season Tires? Thinking about getting goodyear but I've read a lot of horror stories on goodyear tires in the past so hopefully this time around, they have improved.

screw goodyear, your paying for a name not quality

want a good all season on a light lil yaris.. vredestein quatrac4
these tires work well on freezing rain, got me thru our snow storm where other idiots made it to where it took 4 hours to go 15 miles....i did alot of looping around trying to find ways out..even tryed a hill climb..which i had in the bag till an idiot stopped
in the wet, they are pretty well glued to the road, want to chuck the car around go for it the tires wont give up
in the drive, its a gokart on warmed up tires, there is no loss of grip ..chuck it into that hair pin at 50mph and listen to the tires sign

i am running 195s

How about the Falken Sincera SN201 A/S?

A lot of mixed reviews on goodyear, some say it's good, same it's bad.
It's currently on sale.

falken makes great tires period

but you need to think about the weight of your car and how you drive....these lil yaris are LIGHT and the average tire is made for a car 1000-2000 lbs heavier...so most tires on a yaris ride like rocks or dont grip due to the lack of weight

i was lucky enough that the tire shop i use, was willing to bend over backwards to make me happy, we cycled thru a few sets of tires before settling on the verdistans....to find the "soft" tires look for tires with low milage wear(ie tires that shouldnt last more than 20-30k), and remember that the wear of those is based on the average car weight of 3600-4000+lbs

if your looking for a "cheep" tire the mazama reputations are a great tire on a heavier car, in fact ive driven on them in both the suv form and car form, FANTASTIC cheep tire....till you put it on a yaris, in fact it does pretty amazing in the snow on a 01 honda...likc shockingly great tires, but on the yaris it was like driving on a old cold race slick, i was sliding in the wet....never mind cold or snow

for referance i run a 195/60/14, and while its a lil wider than the OE tire its not a drastic size change, but i can also tell you that the change from a 185 to a 195 made wet sharp corners less "uneasy" as the front end grabs instead of pushing, the jump into the new tires tho took that to a whole new level...its a bloody gokart

I am going to 175/70r14 on NA miata rims. I got 6 rims for 100. Within 3% stock diameter but almost a half inch of extra sidewall. I was tired of feeling the little rumble from all my tires running on dented rims.
