View Full Version : ABS problem?

Hello, this is my first post to the forum. I have a 2005 Yaris Mk1 which has over the past couple of years developed an issue with ABS. No warning lights come on but if I brake at very low speed (6mph or less) it's as if the ABS system thinks I'm in a skid and eases off the pressure on the brakes. I hear a clicking noise as this happens. This happens less frequently if I brake heavily but I don't generally drive on my brakes so don't often apply lots of pressure to the pedal. This doesn't seem to be an issue for MOT certificates and I've asked my repair garage (not a Toyota specialist but they're v good) to have a look. They can't find any problems with ABS sensors and have said it's nothing to be worried about. However, I'd like to get it sorted if possible in case it develops. I'd be grateful for any advice on what the problem might be - a bit of internet searching has brought up the issue of reluctor ring problems.
Many thanks,
Sparetyre

If the system is making a clicking noise, that sounds normal to me. I agree with the shop there’s no problem.

Thanks bronsin - this has developed over the last two years or so, previously there was no sound at all. It feels on the brake pedal as if there's a temporary loss of pressure as the ABS tries to kick in so not sure if that's normal.

I grew up driving VW beetles. Four wheel manually adjusted drum brakes! You had to pump the brakes for all they were worth in the winter!
My first car with ABS was my €2009 Yaris. The first day it snowed that I had the car I Approach the stop sign put on the brakes, and the car went right through the intersection! It’s a good thing nobody was going the other way!
So much for ABS brakes. They’re a joke!

My 09 Yaris had premature abs activation, it seemed to do it over the winter especially on cold days. I had to scan it while it was doing it. Found out it was one of the rears sensors. I guess rust jacking is an issue with these. I decided to replace the whole wheel bearing to correct it instead of the sensor only. I haven't had the issue since.
