Hello everyone! I thought I would start a thread to document my process of swapping a 2ZZ-GE in to my Canadian imported 2006 Yaris Base. Currently the car is running the stock 1NZ and stock C50 trans and clutch, with a Garrett GT2048 turbo running 8psi un-intercooled on E85 through a Speeduino. I finally have another car to drive to work, a 2003 Matrix XRS.. which is what made me fall in love with the 2ZZ, so the 1 ton of fun Yaris is finally going under the knife! I plan on using this car as a time attack and hpde machine so I wanna cage it and make it full race car. Currently it has full interior, running a custom set of Air Lift Performance bags, Konig Helium 15x8s and a Whiteline rear sway bar. And yeah, I know, 2ZR is much easier.. but I do not care if its easy! If it was easy, I probably would not do it :iono: Anyway I have most of an engine and trans from a 04 Matrix XRS that I scored from the local U Pull yard for $300 :headbang: so it is getting a C60 along with the 2ZZ. I will try to update this as much as possible as I move forward with the build. For now, here I made you some content:

love the 2zz, the biggest challenge you will face will be getting the electrical working properly, ill be following closely, i have a spare parts car ive been wanting to do some crazy shit to it, would love the 2zz swap.

So part of my job is creating automotive electrical systems so the wiring is nbd to me. Since I already have the speeduino in the car, with the stock ecu talking to the power steering and gauge cluster, I plan on using the yaris harness and ecu with the speeduino actually controlling the engine. The 1NZ and 2ZZ have the same crank and cam tooth pattern, so the 1NZ ecu should be able to decode them and operate like factory. As for the throttle, I plan on making a custom set of ITBs using mid 2010s Yamaha R1 throttle bodies. They are 45mm, have almost the correct spacing for the 2ZZ and are drive by wire. Inside my speeduino I have a D-Stage DBW controller to make the throttle body work currently.. so I just plan on using that again and recalibrating it for the new ITB setup. Here is a quick pic from me playing around in Fusion360 using a 3D scanned 1ZZ and AE101 throttles

Very interested in this build. 2ZZ has been done before but its never been documented well.

dude, take my money if you can build a 2zz harness for a yaris!

That I cannot do... for you or anyone else at least. You have to be on some type of standalone, with the yaris ecu still in place to make this work. Well, at least if you want power steering and your gauge cluster to work. A first gen Yaris/Vitz/Echo would not have this issue as the first gens are standard hydraulic power steering and cable throttle. My second gen and all later Yaris' with electric power steering must have the stock, or a stock ecu in place that operates on the CAN bus. The EPS ecu looks at the powertrain ecu for things like rpm, vehicle speed and other data to determine how much assist to provide. I have been trying to reverse engineer the Toyota CAN protocol to make a CAN device from the Speeduino to talk on the CAN bus so I can eliminate the stock ecu all together, but until then a stock ECU must be in place.
That said, IN THEORY, the Yaris ECU and wiring harness would probably be able to start up a 2ZZ, it would just run like crap. This among other reasons is why a 2ZR is so much easier in this chassis. The 2ZR ecu will talk with all of the factory Yaris electronics which is why you can make 2ZR swaps CARB legal.

The Pontiac Vibe GT with the 2ZZ was available until 08, making a CARB legal swap a possibility for 08 and earlier Yarii. Seems like it would just be easier to take all of the donor car's electronics and put it into the Yaris
Can't wait to see how this build turns out!

Well I brought the car in to the shop today and decided a snap a pic of the engine bay. I didn't really document the process of turboing the car well as I did the full turbo kit over 3 lunch breaks at work lol. Also, the more I look at the 2ZZ and C60 and compare it to the 1NZ and C50, I really think the only mount I will need to make is the passenger side. But we will see as this progresses. I found another full 2ZZ for $400, just need to get the funds so I can go get it!

Pretty sure the frame rail on the drivers side will need notching to fit the C60 since the end cap is larger.

Yup I am planning on notching the rail. I verified with the GL crew that I can do that and still be within the rules

Mods you can lock this thread. This swap is not happening for the time being. After further investigation of the class I was planning on running in, there is no way I can be competitive with only 180hp. So, the car is going back to "stock" so I can run in the Sundae Cup class which is a 25:1 power to weight ratio class with no engine mods allowed. I still plan on doing this swap some day, maybe in to a different Yaris. But for now, this swap is not happening. Sorry to all that were following.
