Is the oval badge on the rear hatch bolted on or is it held by only sticky tape?

(2011 USA hatchback)

Yes..... their are no holes that that area that hold ir on
So any after market badge would be OK to use
You just have to remove the stock badge carefully.
Then, any new badge should be installed with quality double sided tape.

so there ARE holes and guide pins underneath.

So I either find plugs for them in Lowes or find another symbol for the open space.

Any suggestions?

If you had of stated your intent was to debadge the car, I would have warned you about the pins and holes.
I have no suggestions on how to easily and cleanly deal with the two holes.
