View Full Version : How big of wheels without modifying suspension?

Hello! The thing I don't like about my Yaris Sedan is how thin the tires are. I would like to get thicker tires without doing anything to the suspension. I would like 205's or 215's. Can I get 16 inch wheels or would the gap between the tire and the wheel well look funny? What is the biggest tire I can go with without doing any modifications to the car?

Here is what I want to get. What do you think?
Helo Spec HE792
16 x 7.5 42 offset
4 x 100 bolt pattern
BF Goodrich Traction T/A 215 50 R16

if you want to go big you are going to want to stick with 15's that is going to give you the most amount of width... also do you ever plan on lowering it? if so you there are a few things to consider

I don't plan on lowering the yaris. I am going to be driving the yaris on an interstate highway everyday also, so I was thinking 215 is as thick as I should go? I like the idea of 16's, but what do you think?

Here you go:
Stock 15's are 185/60/15 (23.7").
With no mods, you can run 205/55's (23.9") on the stock 15" rims.
If you want to do a JDM plus 1, then you should run 195/50/16's (23.7").
Here in the States, most run 205/50/16's (24.1"), which I would recommend if you're not lowering the car.
As long as you run a high offset (at least 42mm, preferably 45mm), the wheel gap won't look silly. The trick is to keep the tires tucked rather than flush with the fenders.

It sounds like black yaris and kimon54 know what they are talking about! They must have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

The stock 15's just look really small on the yaris. That is why I was asking about the 16's. Maybe a bigger wheel makes the whole tire look bigger?

225/50R15 is the widest 15 you can go and run it with a + 38 on no larger than a 8 in wide wheel

Would a 205/55/R15 give the appearance of the physically largest tire diameter from the side? I guess what I am getting at is I want to
a) put the biggest tire/wheel on the yaris to fill the gap between the wheel well and tire and stills stay within that 3% range, but not touch the suspension
b) drive it down the interstate without being uncomfortable with every bump I hit
b)

Oh, all the other posts appeared just as I posted mine.
Let me make a few more comments then:
If you run 16x7.5's, ET42mm, and a 215/50/16 (24.5"), then your setup will stick out approx 18mm more than stock 15's. Up front you'll be pushing the outer limits, and in the rear you'll be fine.
You'll close up the wheel gap a bit with the taller 215/50 tires, but the remaining wheel gap (and it will be significant) will be visually accentuated because you're setup won't be tucked especially up front.
If you don't plan to lower the car and you want it to look right, then I would recommend a 7" rim at most with a 42-45mm offset.
You could run an aggressive staggered setup if you like with 205's up front and 215's in the rear. That would keep the tires tucked a bit and would look great!

what size of tires do you have on your 17's and 15's? What are the wheel sizes and offsets? To me both the 17's and 15's look nice! I was also looking at the Polo Spy 17's, but I couldn't find anywhere online what the offset is for them or even if they have the right bolt pattern.

Hey Black Yaris, what's with the black then silver 17's on your car in the pics?
Did you paint your wheels black?

The black and silver wheels are the same wheels on the black yaris?
If I were to go with 16's or 17's, how would it affect my gas mileage and will it wear out my wheel bearings faster than if I had 15's?
kimona

I don't believe there will be any significant difference in gas mileage, nor do I believe the wheel bearings will suffer a significantly shorter life whether you run 15's, 16's, or 17's, just so long as you run proper offsets that don't put undue stress on the suspension components.
But as a daily driver, you'll probably enjoy a better ride with the 15's and 16's and perhaps avoid potential wheel damage with taller sidewalls.

black yaris - What kind of wheels are those 17's? They look much better than the stock wheels on my yaris sedan. Do they have those in silver 15's or 16's?

Wheels and tires have always been one of my passions, and I believe that wheel and tire application is an art.
Unfortunately, here in the States, most take a one-size-fits-all approach.
I'll do my best to answer your questions about your application, just keep the thread alive.

Hmmm, well we each have our own tastes.
Hoping not to offend anyone, but for me, they look like a "pimp my ride" application.
We have a very limited selection of wheels (and wheel offsets) here in the US. But to start, try looking at tirerack, disconttiredirect, and buywheelstoday.
As far as tires go, I wouldn't recommend 215's up front unless you want the puddle-jumper look; stock height setup with tires sticking out past the fender wells a bit.

I've got mine lowered on trd's with 18/215's and it only rubs if I hit a bump and there's people in the back seat. I would like it to never rub though... I wonder if I installed new shocks...

That's a good question. Stiffer shocks may just do the trick!
I wonder if anybody in Yarisworld has first-hand experience here.

I went to a shop yesterday and asked about the shocks. I was told that smaller harder shocks would make the problem worse than using the longer stock shocks. They recommended that I sand away the lip inside the rear fender and see if that solves the problem. I'm a little scared to start rubbing away my 2007 car... Has anyone else ever tried or heard of doing this?

Not sanding it but rolling the fenders. Here is a link on the machine you use. I havent done it personally but I have talked to the owner a couple of times. Here is the URL.
http://www.rollyourfender.com/instruction.html
The lowering springs have what is called a spring rate. It is the stiffening and how much give is in the spring. I am using the same springs and the NF's have an almost stock spring rate that way the ride feels more comfortable . The lower you go the stiffer it will be. If you have 215/40/17 tires on the rear with a +40mm offset it will rub. I had the same scenario with my sedan and the rear tires rubbed, but I see you are rolling on 18's. There is another thread that talks about this going on about rubbing but they are talking about their front.

no effect on wheel bearings... only thing that would effect wheel bearings is if you went with a very low or reverse offset (aka making the wheels stick WAY out from the fenders like a Frogger car)
going from my 225/50R15 to my 205/40R17's had little to no effect on my gas mileage
