Does any one have the same problem w/ their yaris sedan?

When I step on the gas and it hits 3000-4000rpm my engine gets really loud. I do this to merge into traffic when i'm on the highway. LIke i could hear chains running. But when i reach 100km/hr at 3000-4000rpm my engine is quiet.

Is this normal?

the car should sound the same at 3000-4000rpm regardless of what gear you're in. if you're cruising at 100km/h, your rpm should be about 2800 or so.

the motors use a timing chain instead of a timing belt, so its possible that you can hear this a bit more. but it should not be that obvious. if in doubt, bring the car back to dealership for a checkup.

My pickup truck makes quite a racket at certain RPM's. It gets real boomy. I think it's called resonance (sp?). Lots of cars have certain engine speeds that make more noise at certain engine speeds. I test drove a Yaris, and never heard any bothersome noises though. I ran the car through the full RPM range.

Who knows...

What do you consider loud though? What car did the Yaris Sedan replace? Mine replaced a very beat up 1995 Honda Civic LX.

To me the Yaris is louder when it idles compared to my old car. As far as noise inside the cabin it doesn't sound loud to me at 3000 rpm. Only time I get close to 4000 rpm is when I'm accelerating to get onto the freeway. At 85 mph (136 km/h) I think it's a little over 3500 rpm. Even that it's loud to me.

I have an automatic.
