okay, i'm a pre-nursing major right now. i really like helping people, especially since seeing the help that nurses provides my father, which is why i want to be a nurse. but they're (schools) are making it harder to become one. the nursing programs are so impacted and are getting harder and harder to get into.

if i don't get into the program, i was thinking of going to Wyotech or UTI. so here's my question...do you guys think that's a good route to take? and also, how much do mechanics or other professions that you can get by going to Wyotech or UTI make? i'm not all about the money, but i would like to be able to support my family when i start one. also, are those professions in demand, meaning i can get a job anywhere any time?

 i can believe what i'm reading, you are a good guy. I knew alot of male who want to be nursing major it's just because they want to sleep with alot of female nurses. I can't stand the hospital smell, but if i could nursing will be my first major.

I don't know if its everywhere but I know nurses are in high demand. I wouldn't think they would make it harder. I guess you have to look at it and say, I'm I passionate about it enough to go through with it or I am doing it just to do and not because I really want to do it. I guess just find your niche' which can be hard, believe me, I'm struggling with it too and I think most people do. I wish the best of luck! Keep us posted!

As mentioned before Accountants are in demand. I know people who are going in Accounting, it seems to be popular.

I heartily agree... I had the opportunity to change my major to automotive engineering, but dumb ol' me was too focused on computer studies... Although this is incredibly useful now in my daily work, I can't help but wonder if I would have been happier doing something car-related...

oh well, c'est la vie, as we say

Just go for nursing, work for a year in an ICU, then apply to anesthesia school. Five more semesters and you can be an Nurse Anesthetist making $150,000 a year. And thats just the national average, you can make a LOT more in some places.

yeah, i don't think i will like being an accountant...as for an anesthetist, sure the money's great (like being an X-ray nurse), but i don't think i would really enjoy those positions as well.

on another note, i hate my summer class (organic chemistry)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know an accountant who quit to become a travel agent.:iono:

I know a few nurses who hated it so much they got out to work as receptionists!

Just realize that as a nurse you will have 3 gods to serve:

1. The doctors who believe they are perfect

2. The hospital or clinic that will put unexplainable and unattainable procedures and protocol on you at every moment

3. The patient and the patients family that will want you to serve their every need at all hours and move Heaven and Earth to do it

Unfortunately the patient always comes last in order of importance.

But yes, there is a very high demand for nurses in all areas of the country (USA). Just open the classifieds in any major city to verify. Signing bonuses, above average benefits, and flex workschedules all being offered around Atlanta from what ive seen.

Why do you think there is a nursing shortage in the US? Refer to numbers 1,2,3 above.

Indeed, nursing can be tough, I know several (all female, however), and known several more who gave it up. Frequently involves bizarre hours, LONG hours, difficult-to-deal-with patients, doctors, administrators. Requires nearly as much education as a physician, yet affords much less status. Rewarding and extremely important work but often exhausting and under-appreciated.

But Grease Monkey on the other hand! As long as people drive cars there will be work for competent mechanic. The local community college in my town has a new and growing motorsports program; graduates go into all sorts of employment, including racing support. Some get their 2-year degree then go on to 4-yr school in engineering or business management, or whatever.

Almost makes me wish I was choosing a career again. Good luck to you!

heh, yeah, i get an extra added bonus for being a male (lol...finally getting back what went to the extra "fee" in car insurance). but yeah, nurses work 3 days a week (an option) with at least a 12 hour shift. that is why it is so tiring. nurses also can choose which shift they want, i.e. day shift or night shift.

as for those to whom i will be slaves for (), forget the doctors and hospitals. the patients will always come first to me. the doctors can just kiss my nice-round.....stethoscope. at least if i can, i'll make my patients my priority.

if i do go to Wyotech or something like that, i'll probably get my mechanic degree, then get a business license and probably try to open a shop or something. i dunno, but i'm still sticking to nursing unless i really can't get in...

oh, i really don't know why they're making it harder to become a nurse. they're upping the test scores and point cut-off for the program. also, they're making a mandatory test that one must pass each semester or else you can't progress. also, there's a test called the TEAS, which they're basing half of the cut off points to get into the nursing progam on (which is stupid imo because the test has irrelevant material for nurses, such as rock formation, maps, etc.). they should make it based on GPA again (majority of cut-off points).

I think you are aware that life is not like TV. Unlike ER or Mash, if the nurse or doctor opposes the administration that issues your paycheck due to opposing viewpoint or philosophical differences you will be out and your career ruined.

Nursing takes a long time to complete and once you gain the education you will forever be in continuing education to stay relevant.

If youre still thinking about mechanic school that sounds better because cars dont require bedpans and dont talk back (unless its a 1980's Nissan).

Yes, nursing is hard but the choice is up to you. Some people love nursing and some hate it.. just like how some people love being a mechanic, and some hate it. Another route you could look into is being a physician assistant. There is a high demand for it and you only need to go to school for about 2 years and get a certificate. They do a lot of the things that doctors do and after a bit could even open up their own practice. Good luck to ya.

OK, I'm chiming in from the school of success and life. It doesn't matter what you go to school for as it will not define you or your potential for financial and social happiness. There is one road block to the life you want... and it's YOU! (not you, Kaotic, just the general "YOU").

Is nursing something that will make YOU happy? Then DO IT! Will you be happy tuning cars, then do that! Most millionaires do not have financial fortunes based on their direct skill, talent or education. It's making the money they make work for them.

If there was a course in school that taught this, I would have been an art major! My wife was a nurse for years, and now works in BioTech. She makes an incredible living. She never considered moving from Nursing to sales... so even Nursing is wide-open; staying in the healthcare arena or moving out of it to a related industry.

My best friend did not go to college. I met him here when he was a motorcycle tech at a Ducati dealer I used to sell bikes at. He decided his life was going to be in real estate, so he made that his goal, went about reading and learning, he found investors and saved some money and bought a 32 unit building in Kentucky! This will cash-flow $10,000 a month, and he went back to working on bikes in his garage for $50 an hour while he looks for his next venture!!

Anyhow, the only thing you need to worry about in competitive situations is yourself, not everyone else. I never understood this, but it's true.

There's my pep-talk for you.

heh, i don't watch those shows. hmmm, how can i explain myself. let's see...i guess i was trying to say that if the doctor or hospital was giving me BS, or the patient BS, then i would say something. since nurses are in high demand, i would think that a job can be had anywhere if they do let me go.

yeah, i know once a nurse, one must take a board exam every couple of years (i think it's two). and if i recall correctly, my friend's mom said that she has to take some classes every now-and-then.

i like helping people, and i like cars (very different from each other, lol). i don't really want to be super rich or anything, but i want to earn enough to be able to support my family and put my kids through college (once i have a family).

i dunno, like i said, i'm going to stick to nursing and being a mechanic is my last resort option. i want my options to be something i would actually like doing for a career. heh.

thanks for the pep-talks.

kaotic, a physician assistant (or P.A. as it's referred to) does pretty much everything that a doctor does. They can prescribe meds, check ups, etc. Probably not operate though hehe but my mom's friend specializes in employment and he tells me that there's a huge demand for it. A first year P.A. after gettin the certificate gets about 80k a year in NY

Nursing jobs are so varied! Friend of mines daughter in law switched from the local hospital to being the school nurse.....loves it, same pay, days only, and summers off! And the PA's are godsends to the smaller towns....and practically in charge of themselves in those situations.

are you going for the RN?? cuz to be an LVN, it takes less than 2 years. my lil nephew is currently at concorde, and will be done by this winter. sure, his pay is going to be in the mid-20 range per hour, but then you can do housecalls. a couple of housecalls a day (home health is what i believe they call it) and you're set, cuz i think its at least 50/hour for a house call, and all you do is check vitals. it will definitely take longer to get his RN, but at least he got his feet wet already. the only thing i dislike about this situation is the fact that concorde is private school, so his first few years of pay will be going towards student loans. by then, he may have more loans in trying to get his RN. but yeah, those trade schools are pumping out nurses like crazy nowadays. im HAPPY the test are harder. i dont want a DUMBASS turning me into swiss cheese trying to get a vial of blood. we've all run into incompetent people before, and the hospital is the LAST place i wanna see them... good luck man!

yeah, my friend is taking an LVN program in Vallejo. he can get his RN before we do, and we started before he did! lol...but yeah, i'm talking about being an RN.

as for the test, they can make it harder, but the fact that they heavily base the entrance into the nursing program on a stupid test that doesn't really say anything about nursing (come on, sedimentary rocks?). they should really base it on one's GPA, since it is more likely that those classes are actually classes that a nurse will need to know, unlike how to read a map or rocks.

yeah, i've had an incompetent nurse take my blood before. and man, did that hurt!
