View Full Version : Just Crashed my Yaris

I just came back from the accident and my neck hurts a bit. Sorry if I don't make much sense at the moment.

I was heading back home after leaving my brother at school. The pavement was wet from the rain the night before. Some geniuses at the local county thought it would be a good idea to add a new speed bump at the curb, unpainted the day before. Since the Yaris has no ABS, I just basically skidded off the street and onto a car that had just crashed because of the same reason.

The worst thing about this whole thing was that the guy from the other crash got hit while he was standing in front of his car, and got a dislocated left knee. He was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital, and he will most likely need surgery to get it fixed. I feel like crap for that, but the guy was very cool and didn't blame me at all.

The other thing I wanted to mention is that even while the crash was pretty much head on, my airbags didn't deploy. I am about to make the necessary calls to my dealership and tear somebody's head off. I advice everyone in this forum to have that double-checked, because in my book this is unacceptable.

Sorry for the rant, but I thought you guys might be interested in knowing how important it is to get those airbags checked.

OUCH! Good thing your alright. How's the car? Most car's airbags aren't designed to deploy if the impact wasn't severe enough. Post pics when you can.

Glad you're ok. Hows the damage to the Yaris?

Sorry to hear about your wreck. My gf was involved in a wreck and the airbag had gone off in my yaris. Hope you're going to be ok.

Aww man...I'm sorry to hear about that. It's good that you and the other guy are okay. It could have been worse. If you were here, I'd rub your neck for you. That is strange that the airbag didn't deploy. It's a little spooky to think about actually. But again, you are okay and honestly that's all that really matters.

fucking speed bumps.

whoa that is VERY scary. You can probably sue those ppl for putting the speed bumps there. I'm glad that you're OK though and hopefully, things will be ok. I don't know how severe the hit was but sometimes the airbags don't go off if it's not serious enough. Let us know how you are doing

Go to the Doctor. If I'm ever involved in another accident I'm going to the doctor. I'm not even getting out of the car until the ambulance gets there. I learned my lesson on this. If you want to come out on top go to the Doctor today.

Hope you get a new car. a lot of money and good drugs. Maybe even some time off work.

I almost wiped mine out the other day on slick roads. I had plenty of room but no ABS is certainly different. I kinda prefer it on the dry roads but wet and oily errrr.

By the way if the bag deployed you'd probably just have facial burns from the explosive powder to go with the sore neck. But anyway sue ass. get rich and send some my way.

brickhardmeat is dead on, head to the doctor ASAP. Make sure there's no lingering soft-tissue damage. Until you do if anyone asks DO NOT say you weren't injured, just that your neck hurts and you haven't gotten it checked out yet. If it does come down to a reimbursement claim or lawsuit it could matter.

Hope it doesn't come to that, though, and that you get your car fixed/replaced without a hassle. It really does sound like the county screwed up by not marking the speed bump, especially if someone else did the exact same thing moments before.

Believe me: The impact was severe enough. I'm getting my insurance pics on tuesday and I'll post them here.

The jellybean is pretty much wrecked in the front and the front right wheel was pretty much dangling. My heart is broken. :brokenheart:

Tell me about it.
Thanks for the neck rub offering. It would really help out right now.

I'm definitely suing, since it's clearly stated on transit regulations that you can sue if there's no clear street signs indicating nearby speed bumps.

Yup. Going to the doctor later today. As far as getting time off work, that's not really a problem, since I'm a freelancer.

Not only that, but I just heard that six other cars just impacted with each other because of the same thing! Traffic is at a standstill at the moment.

Brick's right, go to the doc! Make sure that sore neck is not anything serious.

I say this because when I was in a wreck a few years ago, I had a concussion and did not even know it. The ambulance came (for someone else) and the driver saw me sitting by side of the road. He asked me some simple questions (such as who is the president, what day is it) and I could not answer correctly! Had to go to hospital even though I did not feel that bad.

So please go to doc! We'll be thinking about you!

Hopefully the doctor will give a clean bill of health, the insurance company will total your car (you're almost always better off replacing than repairing when it comes to suspension damage, it never seems to go back to the way it was), and they'll settle out of court with the county.

What are you doing for a car in the mean time? Is your insurance company covering a rental?

I hope the Toyota manager plays it cool and just replaces my car. I'm sure he doesn't want things to get to rowdy, since I am planning to get a Camry from them. Plus, I'm sure there's a possibility that the airbag thing can get him into trouble, so I'm sure he'll just take the more convenient route.

What are you doing for a car in the mean time? Is your insurance company covering a rental?Heh, that's a good one. :bellyroll:
I wish we had good insurance companies like in the US. My guy basically arrived an hour after I placed the call, filled out the papers, and left. I mean, he was professional while he was there and everything, but he was pretty much trying to get it over with asap (and I probably don't blame him for it, since I'm pretty sure his job sucks and needs to get to the next wreck of the day).

My point is that he didn't offer too much and I guess I didn't ask for enough either. Such is life down here, I'm afraid.

I didn't realize you weren't in the US, what country are you from?

It might be worth calling up your insurance company and seeing what they can do for you if you're not sure. It can't hurt. With mine the guy who comes out is pretty much just there to access the damage, and just drives from accident from accident. Once I put in an actual claim (and had a claim number) they put me in contact with a claim rep who got me a rental, towed the car to a body shop, etc.

I'm really big on milking the insurance company for all their worth. Mine is willing to do a lot more for me than just pay out when an accident is my fault (which thankfully hasn't happened yet, knock on wood), so if there's a problem or I need something I tend to let them know.

I hope everything works out for you. It's not your fault, which is the #1 thing you can have going for you.

Go too the doc and then get yourself an attorney shortly thereafter. The guy that was understanding at the accident scene is going to sue you, the county, your insurance company, Toyota, the local asphalt manufacture, the people who trim your neighbors lawn, etc. While your waiting for the court subpoena make contact with every other person who has crashed at the spot since the road modifications and prepare your own civil suite against the government entity responsible for the road modification and research the traffic codes in reference to highway sinage and markings. You will most likely settle out of court for a reduced amount, but non the less scathed. DAMHIK!!!:smoking:

it's probably a good thing that the airbags didn't deploy, if the impact was great enough to need airbags that guy's knee would be gone, not dislocated.

I turns out the guy's knee was the least of his problems. He also has a fractured tibia and calf bone, which he won't be able to get treated until tomorrow.

I feel so bad for that guy!

I'm also not feeling that hot myself. My back and neck are pretty sore. Can't complain, though... Not when another guy is in the hospital!

Doc Zaius! You a real doctor? I needs drugs for my pain... :smoking:

Yeah... I need a ride to the hospital. My back is killing me right now. I had a couple of Ibuprofens a while ago, but they didn't really do the trick I suppose.

for legal and financial reasons, you should probably see a doctor asap - my mom was in a minor accident a few years ago and she is about to get a pretty nice junk of change (not huge huge, but enough to do some nice re-modeling of her house)...

oh man, sorry to hear that... and kind of creepy after our discussion yesterday of testing airbags and rebars!!!! I was only joking when I asked you to crash into something!!!

But seriously I am glad to hear you are mostly fine, I hope your visit to the doctor will go well.. and hey, if you still have pain, it's nothing a few shots of tequila won't fix

I'm not the kind of guy who'd sue for any reason, but that new speed bump seems like a really bad decision, aren't they supposed to make things safer??? You could maybe get in touch with the other drivers who crashed and get some sort of class action lawsuit or something like that, I'm not sure if it's a possibility for you...

im glad ure ok homes, and the fact ure still in tact lol. little off topic, is the car repareable? cause the amount of force you needed to fracture his lower exterior must have taken a toll to your front. and if its a totalled ride, i get dibs on the side panel trims :P called it T lol

Can you sue government entities in Mexico? Sounds like a losing proposition as the lawyers will be paid off by the officials to go away....

Is Mexico as litigious happy as the US? I dont know??

Honestly, I would much rather get a new car at this stage. I'm almost certain that just getting it repaired will not leave it the way it originaly was.

Can you sue government entities in Mexico?

You sure can! I'm planning on doing just that, in fact.

Not even close. The US has to be the biggest one in the planet when it comes to this.

<works in insurance(claims reporting to be exact) though it may sound serious, does not sound serious enough to total out thge veh.. sounds very fixable so long as the frame wasnt tweaked.. i have taken 2 accidents involving yaris.. both were a lot more severe and did need to be totaled(one girl fell asleep & the other was involoved in 7 car pileup.. both sedans) i think this is totally fixable.. glad that your okay, see a doc asap, get that money...lol thought of moving to us? lol i will never drive down to mex.. im afraid neither me or my car will ever be seen again..lol too many horror stories from claims class...ha ha ha ha ha

Yup. Exactly what the guys @ the shop said. Looks like the frame wasn't hurt at all. The guy at Toyota told me that the front is designed to crumple like that in order to minimize the damage to the rest of the car. Go figure. I should be getting my ride back in a few more days.

I've actually lived in the US a couple of times. I like the US a lot (well, most of it, anyway). As far as you coming to Mexico, it really isn't as bad as ppl like to put it. Most problems between mexicans and americans lie in the northern part of Mexico. If you were to drive through all that and just get down here to the central and southern states, you would see how much nicer people are towards gringos... erm I mean, americans.
