I'm not too worried about getting searched. The cops probably don't even know that behind the tach is a storage compartment. Anyhow, I like the look and prefer the larger tach for visibility. Cheers.

why not just swap out the stock gauge cluster for the one from a sedan with a tach already in it??

just questioning for to discuss the difficulties behind it, not to say you didnt do a good job with a clean after market install.

Cost, the aftermarket gauge is a whole lot cheaper than any Toyoto gauge. My set up, It's kinda like the Mini cooper style. Sporty. I DIY soon. Thx.

Can't swap gauges from a sedan, there are too many variations of the harness according to Toyota. Believe me the question has been asked many times by many people and nobody has had any luck with an alternative yet short of an aftermarket tach, bums me out too. I still have to decide how I'm going to mold in my tach, I have a prototype but did quite like how it fit.

Need to get one from an old Pontiac GTO/Judge. They mounted outside the car on the hood and had the same half-oval shape our dash/speedo housing has. I've seen them in a JC Whitney Mag not to long ago but not sure if it's able to be wired into the electronics. Would look good as a "bump" on the hood.

Someone will figure it out.

I like it. Thats a clean looking install. I installed mine on top of the drivers side vent, and it allows me to still use the storage compartment; but to each his own. Good job, man! Keep it up.

I mounted a 5" tach in the same place, but mine is much more slender (Faze, not Autometer) so I can still open the door behind it. I liked the look of the Autometer tach, but the Faze fit better. I'll post pictures if anyone is interested.

Okay, I posted a few pictures in my garage. You can see how slim the tach is and I even snapped a picture with my storage box door open.

Thanks for the pics. That helps me out alot. I like the placement. Are there 4 wires? Looks pretty simple. Did you pull that steering column to mount the tach with screws/bolts?

Again, thanks for the help.

First remove:

2 screws in the front of the steering wheel. Turn the steering wheel and you will see the screws. (DO NOT REMOVE THE HORN COVER, TURN THE WHEEL AND YOU WILL FIND THEM)

You will find 3 screws at the bottom of the steering column that hold the plastic cover. After removing the 3 screws you can pull the plastic top/bottom part of the steering column and install you new tach. You can also pull you wiring nicely behind the dashboard.

4 wires,
1. Black, ground wire
2. Red main power wire
3. White tach light wire
4. Green RPM signal wire

1. I attached the ground inside the driver side kick panel.
2 and 3. I attached the red power/white light wire to the primary stereo power line
4. I attached the green RPM signal wire in to the ECU wiring block under the driver side dashboard. Its the most left wire in the connector block. This is the connector block that the ScangaugeII guys use.

It's pretty easy. You could decide to attached the white light wire to the dimmer on the driver side but, I didn't really mind having the light on in the tach 24/7.

Hopefully that helps.

rwseattle,
Thanks, I actually like the way yours looks better, but I use my storage box, so I was unable to use the Autometer tach.

So I have had the car for 4 days and decided to install a tach. Well me and my friend did everything in about ten minutes and then spent a half an hour pulling out a fuse! Haha Im gonna buy some real small pullers! The tach looks great and is 100% accurate though so I'm a happy camper. I didn't realize gears12 and 3 were so big and 4-5 so small. Sweet.
