TRD Exaust - Cops and legality

I live in Mass, and the state cops here are jerks (just dont try telling that to their face, I know from experience that they dont like it too much ;) and they like to nail people for having 'altered exausts.' I know the TRD muffler is an actual toyota part so it technically isnt aftermarket, but if I get pulled over and the cop hasnt had his donut and his blood sugar is low, it might not be enough to say that. I am wondering if there is anything I could show the cops that would prove it is noise and emission legal. anyone have any experience with this? :smile:

no, its not emissions that im worried about. I know it will pass inspection, but the cops see crome on the exaust and it puts them into a frenzy thinking I have an aftermarket exaust system, which here is considered an 'altered exaust' which is illegal. looking for a certificate from toyota saying its 'nose certified legal in all 50 states' or something to that extent.

honestly...i dont think the cops would even notice the trd exhaust is aftermarket....it almost looks like the stock tC's...plus it sounds stock as well.....they only get people with the big canisters...

Listen i used to live in MA and have had dealings with the exhaust nazis. There's nothing you can do when a cop wants to screw you over, explaining things to someone that already pulled you over will make you look more guilty. If i were you i would have the paperwork (purchase receipt, exhaust information, etc) with your registration just in case, but most likely you will have to fight it in court. But like somebody else here said, this thing looks stock (you should see my G-readdy coconut launcher) so the cop that stops you for that is an a-hole. Cheers.

I love hearing that thing roar no doubt but with age comes experience :laugh: . Im not stupid enough to red line it when there's a cop on every corner around here!

yes, most of the state troopers are a-holes. when I got pulled over before it was origionally because I had cleared my headlights and took out the reflectors. he didnt like that, and then asked if my exaust was aftermarket. I answered yes for some reason... so he takes my info back to his car and just starts doing whatever they do.. after a few minutes I got out of my car because I wanted to explain and point out the headlights and stuff. after a few minutes he got out of his car and I showed him some stuff and he just handed me the ticket, and basically just started walking away. so as hes walking away I shout 'why do you have to be a jerk about this?' and he goes 'what did you call me??' I say 'well why dont you just let me fix the issues, I didnt know they were illegal or I wouldnt have done them.' he goes, 'because Im a jerk.' then I shout out 'I guess you are!!' and he speeds away. hahaah

The worst is yet to come though. I contest the ticket, and I NEVER get a court date in the mail... then I get a license suspension notice and a late fine after ONE WHOLE YEAR!! I go down to the DMV and they say to go to the court and ask for a new hearing... I drive down to the court and ask the woman behind the counter for a new date as I never got the old one in the mail. she nicely takes my paperwork and goes into a room.. like 10 minutes later she comes back all pissed off.. 'I cant give you once because your mailing address is the same as the one I have on file for you, so you must have got it.' so I say 'how am I supposed to be responsable for the mail??' and she gets all huffy and says 'im not debating this with you sir!' ....

So, I go back down to the dmv and he asks me if I got a new date. I say no, and he goes 'I have never heard of that happening before. every time they request a new date people get them.' so the cop fixed my ticket so I couldnt get a new court date, he really screwed me over!!!! I ended up getting the late fee removed though, but I have this stuid violation on my record for 4 years and my premimums went up...........

I see more modified exhausts on pickup trucks around where I am (backwoods Georgia) than ricemobiles anyday and they NEVER get pulled over for that shit (probably cuz the cops drive that garbage here and they like em).

To be honest with you, tell the cops to fu** off. Their are louder cars on the road, especially the ones with the muffler hanging off their hangers, making loud noise, or the ones with without no muffler at all. Their are muscles cars that are louder than that, they don't say nothing. Their just h8rs. As long as the muffler(exhaust) looks stock, it shouldn't be a problem.

I doubt I will have an issue, but if you get pulled for it then there isnt much you can do except be nice and hope the cop is cool, or just fight it in court if he wont listen. it is legal, so the law is on your side. its not like im trying to put a big fart can on there or anything...

if the cop doenst have a db meter how can he know if your exhaust is too loud ask to see his db meter most police departments dont carry them in cars so you can get out of sterio and exhaust tickets ive used this for sterio tickets

I just installed it, man I didnt realize how LOUD it would be!! I like it though, but it definately is louder than stock, haha

i hate cops. if you look at the majority of Mustangs, Camaro's, Silvarado's, Suburbans, and all of those American cars, they never get pulled over. i would take it to court and say something like that and finish it off with being discriminated against (especially if one of those cars are in the area if you get pulled over). for all i care, those sh*tty cops can just...f-in haters...

The cops will think you will just fall apart and pay the ticket. I had this happen about 8 years ago when I was a "minitrucker" and Altezza taillights came out, and that was also the first year the sporty lexus 2 door came out. I was pulled over by a state cop here in Indiana and they were bitching because parts of the lens were clear. It just so happens I pulled into the parking lot where he was at and told the officer to look at his and explained that he needed to call Lexus and ticket them for every car they manufactured with those taillights and to go to the local dealerships and tell them to quit selling them, and he said your right and let me go.

If they are complaining about an "altered exhaust" ask them why do Mustang Cobras have a factory altered exhaust or Silverado SS have a "factory" altered exhaust. I would have taken it to court, and I bet the cop wouldn't even show. They have to define and tell why they would ticket you in that instance. By altered if you go and have a different muffler put if it is loud or not and he pulls you over for speeding and looks and sees you have a different muffler then he can give you a ticket for an "altered" exhaust?

I just talked to the parts manager at my local dealer. I asked him if there was any issue with it and cops, and at first he said 'well did you see the label on the box about some states?' well there is no such label, so I said no. then he says well its a factory part, so I shouldnt have any issues. I then brought up the fact that they are selling a LB there that the preinstalled an exhaust on. he continuted to say that I shouldnt have any issues, they had been selling tacomas and stuff with the exhausts and hadnt run into any issues. I said thats why I bought it and if I got pulled over I was going to just tell them it was a factory part. he suggested I keep the recept in the car just in case which I was doing anyways.

I doubt I will have a problem and feel better now knowing that they will back me. If I have the recept and show the cops it and say it was from toyota, your right, they would have to sue toyota since its from them.

This article is talking about the exhaust issue (http://www.semasan.com/main/main.aspx?id=62241) however SEMA Action Network wrote up something that may interest you in MA. Basically they're saying that this new bill doesn't clairify specific alteration are, and to fight this new bill try writing to your Rep. Liz Malia.

In the article, they have mention some stuff on the benifits. Maybe you can discuss with the cop to try to get out of a fix it ticket.

That pretty much means, get a ticket and fight it in the courts. The courts/judicial system are there to interperate the laws.
The police are part of the executive system, their only job is to enforce them. They don't have to know how to interperate them, or what they mean, they just enforce.

Also have NEVER seen a motorcycle pulled over NEVER.

Seeming that I have been in law enforcement I take offense to that. I have ran cars with cut exhuast and have had no problems. Shoot I ran a car open header for a day and drove by officers with no problems. Plus I dont like donuts and I know alot of officers that dont. That is just what movies and the media have done to put down law enforcement officers. Dont do anything bad and they wont mess with you. I have gotten pulled over alot but do I get mad, no because I was doing something wrong.
