Ok this might be a stupid question, but how much would it cost to get my Vitz (Yaris) converted to a rear wheel drive car. And is it even possible? I'm thinking like $2,509,198.34 but I thought I might ask anyway. :iono:

The Yaris has a short enough wheel base to make the car extremely agile. It's not worth the money, time, and amount of work to get a very minimal gain, you might even experience oversteering with it. At the same time, that extra weight for the driveshaft would make the car slower...

It is possible and has been done right here in the States. It wouldn't be easy and it would cost a fortune unless you're doing the work yourself.

AFAIK the only Yaris that was RWD was also running a 2.6L Tacoma engine. There were pictures of the car posted here long, long ago... right after I joined. If you search really hard you may find them. It was to be a drift car.

I am sure it would be much more cost effective to shipp an AWD trans, transfercase, axles, etc from a vitz. it would be much more bennificial to most to go AWD as well... then slap a Turbo on then you are ready to go

The way I see it, you have two options to go RWD.

1. Hack up pretty much most of the car and install a longitudinal engine in the front, with custom drive shaft, etc, big money

2. Remove front engine and gearbox, and put it where the rear seats used to be. Still a huge amount of work, but probably more feasible.

Though keep this in mind, the Yaris has a pretty short wheelbase, short RWD cars do have a tendency to spin out more easily than lomger ones, so you'll need some pretty major suspension tweaking to keep it well balanced. But boy would it be pure madness to drive

My thinking would be to find an FC/FD shape RX7, whether NA or turbo, and stick that 13B engine into the Yaris together with the drivetrain suitably modified. The engine is small enough and the relatively low torque nature of the rotary engine should help the short wheel base nervousness a bit.

Of course, I'd say leave it alone, not all that is RWD would be gold. The car is fun as an FF as well.

Check this out -it costs $25k to make a ford focus rwd and v8 http://www.ford-v8-focus.com/q&a.html -i have a v8 fiero -the kit to install the v8 was $3k -the engine was about $2k -suspension kit about $2k and i did all the work myself -after all that everytime something stupid breaks it costs atleast $300 in parts, like an electric waterpump is $300 a starter is $300, etc -But i like the car....... -maybe someone will make a yaris kit like the focus i wouldnt put a v8 in it but maybe a twin turbo supra motor ??

It would be easier to get a Miata and stick the Yaris shell over it.

OMG... You use "???" thread title to bring me here with that #$@#^%%$& question. LOL.

anything's possible, with the right combination of time, skill and money. Just go watch Monster Garage for inspiration. So, how about a rocket-powered Yaris?

Hey, I know its been a long time since I've made any updates about the project. Here's a little insite to what it takes to make a RWD Yaris.
Parts alone for the project will cost upwards of $20,000.
For my actual swap, I'm into it about $10,000 already.
Engine $1-5k (stock)
Trans $500-2500
Rear End $500-1500
Engine Management $250 (megasquirt)-$5000
Custom Drive Shaft $200
Steering Rack $100
Tunnel $60
Fuel system $1000
Cooling system $800
Custom Exhaust Manifold and System $500-800
Custom Intake $100
Raw Materials (cage, firewall, etc) $2000

That's before suspension, brakes, seats, belts, wheels, tires, suspension, etc.

Labor, we're into the project about 400 hours. Total when its ready to race will be between 600-800. If you had to pay a shop 40-80 an hour, you're talking $24,000-$64,000...so unless you're going to do it yourself, its probably not going to be worth it. The wheel base is NOT as short as some people believe. I have a comparison posted on http://www.mospeed.com/ProjectYaris.html

If anyone ever has a question or inquiry you can reach me on AIM:thefoth71.

HMM Yaris on the moon... that'd be interesting, it is kind of shaped like a shuttle pod.
