View Full Version : DIY: JDM RS Tail Light Installation

I searched and couldn't find an install guide for these things, so I decided to make one myself. I'm in IT, so when it comes to installing stuff, I suck. I can build a secure multi-site VPN, but I can't change my own oil. This install is mega easy... was going to get my friend to help me with but I was impatient.
Stuff you'll need:
JDM RS Tail Lights (duh!)
2 x JDM Wiring Connector Part #82824-52050
10mm wrench
Flathead screwdriver
Small allen key.
First step is to open the trunk, and get access to the tail lamps. Using your flat head screwdriver, carefully pry the top of this cover off:
http://www.virgeweb.com/rage2/yarisrstails/01.jpg
This exposes the tail lights assembly:
http://www.virgeweb.com/rage2/yarisrstails/02.jpg
Using the wrench, remove the 2 nuts that hold the lamp in place. Be careful not to drop the nut (hehe), it'll be impossible to find. Once the nuts are off, pull the rear cluster out. It's clipped on with a plastic piece so you'll need a bit of force. Don't worry, nothing will break. Once it's out, apply pressure to the top of this connector using your screwdriver:
http://www.virgeweb.com/rage2/yarisrstails/03.jpg
And pull the plug out. Make sure when you pulled the cluster out, the white plastic clip stays on the car. If it's stuck on the cluster like so:
http://www.virgeweb.com/rage2/yarisrstails/04.jpg
Pry it off with the screwdriver:
http://www.virgeweb.com/rage2/yarisrstails/05.jpg
Now, the fun part. You have to wreck your stock connector on the car side. If someone knows how to do this without wrecking it, let me know! It's important that the metal clips at the end of each wire is not broken, thus, it's better to wreck the plastic clip which is replacable if you want to go back to stock. Stick the allen key into the slot with no wire and push up on it:
http://www.virgeweb.com/rage2/yarisrstails/06.jpg
This lifts the top clip cover up slightly, use your screwdriver to pry the entire cover up like so:
http://www.virgeweb.com/rage2/yarisrstails/07.jpg
Then pull the whole top off:
http://www.virgeweb.com/rage2/yarisrstails/08.jpg
Next, use the screwdriver and carefully lift up each of the plastic tabs that hold in the metal clip at the end of the wire:
http://www.virgeweb.com/rage2/yarisrstails/09.jpg
Pull the wire out carefully to avoid damage:
http://www.virgeweb.com/rage2/yarisrstails/10.jpg
Once all the wires are pulled out, your clip should look mangled like this hehe:
http://www.virgeweb.com/rage2/yarisrstails/11.jpg
Grab the new connector:
http://www.virgeweb.com/rage2/yarisrstails/12.jpg
Look at it from the end. There are 4 holes on the top row and 2 on the bottom on each corner. I'll number them for reference.
1 2 3 4
5 x x 6
The clip looks like this:
http://www.virgeweb.com/rage2/yarisrstails/13.jpg
The passenger side wires are as follows:
2 - Grey
3 - Red
4 - White w/Black Stripe
5 - Orange
6 - Yellow
http://www.virgeweb.com/rage2/yarisrstails/14.jpg
The driver side wires are as follows:
2 - Green
3 - Brown
4 - White w/Black Stripe
5 - Purple
6 - Light Green
http://www.virgeweb.com/rage2/yarisrstails/15.jpg
Remember the white plug? Make sure it's still on the car. If you had to remove it from the cluster, slap it back on the car like so:
http://www.virgeweb.com/rage2/yarisrstails/16.jpg
Plug the new connector into the car. Test the 4 lights. Reverse, lights on (dim brakes), brakes on, and turn signal. Once it's tested, push the cluster in, bolt the 2 nuts back on each side carefully... make sure you don't drop the nuts! Close the covers, and you're done!

Enjoy!

hehe glad I can help others! It was pretty frustrating searching for install help, pieces of instructions were littered on several threads, and finiding english wiring instructions with proper color names was a chore too (what the hell is Ash? haha). Voltmeter is your friend!
I actually went half way thru the install before I realized I should take pics and do a write up haha.

Thank God for this DIY and the official JDM taillight thread. I used both last weekend.
The wiring was indeed a bitch for this (I blew up the 10 amp tail fuse like Chino did but quickly replaced it due to the advice on this forum).
The end result is fantastic too. Just glad I didnt pay $350 for mine like several here did.

Be very careful about the decision. JDM is about 3x more.
There are replicas now on fleetBay.

Those have a totally different connector, so you'll have to figure out the wiring, as my wiring in this thread won't work for those lights. Mine are Toyota JDM lights.

Yeah $400 is freakin' steep. I just got JDMs and I'm not sure it was money well spent
Are they awesome? YES. But I can't see them when I'm driving and have yet to see another on the road. I went thru Japanparts, $395 without connectors. (IMO $18 for 2 pieces of plastic is ABSURD, here's my work-around. I removed the JDM connector and plugged the contacts into the USDM plug after insulating each contact with electrical tape, no problems with shaking or baking.
I think the replicas are a good option assuming they are comprable in quality, ie no leaks, condensation, or short life LED wafers. Otherwise I recommend PayPal with Japanparts... lower surcharges

Cheap insurance... the factory lights have rubber seals on the edge as well as all mounting points, plus its designed and tested to not let water in through any of the openings.
I'm not saying the knockoff ones are prone to letting moisture in, but I'd rather pay a little more than to deal with a random rust issue in some part of the car that I can't see.

I hear ya, and it's almost $400 for JDMs  Anyhow I like to see a side by side comparo.

No one can truly compare the quality for a few years. Let's see how the LEDs hold up.
I am considering getting a set of red knock offs from jimcat so I can change my lights on a whim.

they make a tool for repining plugs so you dont have to break the white plugs so you dont trash them.... or needle nose pliers, a soft grip, and a little time, makes it less destructive also.

Hi Rage 2,
I've got the JDM Taillight as well, however, I cut the wire and soder wire from wire to make it work. Now here's my question, do u notice when u put it in reverse both blinkers goes on dimmly, as well as if u put on your turn signal as you going reverse it blinks super fast (turn signal lights) if not please help, I kinda need wire to wire color coding since I don't have the plugs/pins from car any more. thanks

For sure I'm going to get them. I decided right now that I don't really care if I get like authentic JDM things. Besides wheels, a front lip, and skirts, I'm more about go, not show. The wiring issue doesn't really phaze me too much. I'll just take my time and be careful ;)
lol, about t.f.d. two of my favorites are the one where a character's like "i just wanted to pet the hipster. he was so soft." and the one where the character had "balls" written on his forehead and he's like "hamster, this is not a fraternity and if I ever wake up with anything written on my head again, you are going back to the pet store" i literally laughed for like ten minutes straight. ahhh.

03-23-2009, 03:43 AM
^ That plastic piece holds that part of the light housing onto the body of the car since there is no fastener to secure it in that area.
I found a way to salvage the old white clip if you want to reuse it in the future. It takes a little time, but at least you won't have to buy a replacement if you ever want to put back your old lights.
Instead of tearing out the top part to release the connector and wiring (like rage2 did in his photos), look at the opening where the connector is located. You'll be able to see a small clip/notch that's holding the connector. Just insert a small screwdriver, lift up that white clip and slide out connector and wire.

I ended up cutting the wires and using 3m quick connects.
they were very easy to use but your way seems better in the long run so you dont run out of wire, especially on the driver's side, LOL

I ordered the connectors mentioned in this thread and they were completely wrong for the tail lights ordered from MicroImage. Anyone need some connectors?
I just took the original connectors off the stock lights and put them on the new ones.
There is a little plastic locking bale that needs to be popped out with a screwdriver. Then I used a bobby pin to unlock each pin from the connector. The pins just pop into the connector, you put the locking bale back in, and you are all set!

You can find JDM tails for cheap on Yahoo Auctions Japan. But you have to use a third party logistics company such as Buyee.jp
Just bought JDM tails for $50, used but yes $50 and change for the pair. Shipping was anywhere from $100 - $150. I was in no hurry so I picked the cheapest so out the door was around $150!
Now I'm trying to find the connector but I might just cut and splice the wires.
