You guys won't believe this, but I've got original Toyota paint for everybody! I went to the dealership and the dude that had previously backed out offered me enough paint for the eyelids at a fraction of the retail price. The fabricator is coming here to make the final cuts and get them lids painted at long last.
I will keep updating this thread as the news comes in.

Yeah man, I really liked how my pair came out. Can't wait to put it on my car as soon as it gets back from the shop. (still waiting on that litte detail lol)... again, I'm sorry for the pic quality... Had to use my LG Chocolate as my camera one more time...
Up close and personal, these really look great, and as far as I can tell they look OEM as well. They paint was still a bit fresh on some, and one more clearcoat needs to be applied, so that means about 24-48 more hours to cure. As soon as they look good to go, I will bubble-wrap these babies and send to the appropriate destinations.
Now that we know what the process is like, I am sure the second batch process should go by much faster.
Thanks to the guys in the 1st batch for making this possible!:respekt:

After quite a few attempts to get all the shipment info going using FedEx, I have decided to just charge a flat fee of $20 for shipping for US orders, $25 for Canada, and $30 for Elsewhere for now. This will include both shipping and PayPal fees, and if it ends up being less (hopefully it's not more) I will refund the difference to you guys.
There are just a few hours left, and it looks like only Black Yaris will be missing out this time around. As for everyone else, I really appreciate hanging in there for all this time. I have done my best to make a product that will look great and last for years to come.
I am cutting the deadline a bit short since I'm about to get wasted with some friends (:drinking::smoking:) and I need to let off some steam that has been steadily building up because of a few factors, such as the eyelid fabrication process.
I will send everybody an invoice tomorrow. The plan is to receive all the funds between tomorrow and monday. The first post in this thread will reflect everybody's status so as to give as much info as possible.
As soon as all the ppl have paid up, I will send the shipment to redyaris using FedEx Int'l Priority. He will in turn split the package and send each pair to their new respective owner.
If you guys have any questions, please don't hesitate to PM me or send me a message using the IM tool of your choice. Thanks again!

Yes. This has the advantage of reducing shipping costs as much as possible for all members in a group. redyaris has agreed to simply split the pair in parts and re-ship to the respective members as soon as he gets the shipment, so that basically means that you guys should be getting your packages 24-72 hours later, which IMO is not bad at all.
This procedure has been on display on the original thread (click on my sig) for quite a while now, and I did specify that suggestions for this process were open to anybody in the GB, so I'm starting to believe that I wasn't clear enough on this. My apologies if that is the case!

Well, I've just received word that I'm going to have to ship in three separate packages in order to get these labeled as samples, which saves you guys a few more bucks. This means that I can start shipping the first 2 packages as soon as tomorrow morning!
I will be shipping these in order of payment received, BTW, so it looks like you won't have to wait for much longer.
tk-421
08-02-2007, 06:13 PM
The first 4 packages have now been shipped and the respective tracking info has been e-mail to each recipient. I hope you really enjoy your eyelids, since a fair amount of BST (blood, sweat, tears) was used in the development process.
I would really appreciate some installed pics as soon as you can post them, along with your permission to use them for additional GBs and such. Also, please let me know if the packaging was sturdy enough in order to continue sending them this way. I went for "custom" packaging (if you can call it that) in order to save as much weight as possible, while keeping the lids sturdy. I've also marked these as "fragile" BTW, so let me know if they even read those labels.
Thanks again guys!

I haven't forgotten about you, friend. I am just waiting for xCookiE to open up his package in order to determine if the fastest way to get you your eyelids is by just swapping your lids with his.

Hey folks, thanks to redyaris' pics I was able to detect a bit of an offset between the end of the eyelids and the hood line. I believe this is easily repairable by using a dremel. If you'd like it to be done by me, I am totally willing to get them back from you and repair them, as long as it doesn't end up costing me a lot, since I really don't have too much money at the moment TBH.

Well, since you guys are the ones from the first batch, all of the research into making the eyelids was done using your time and your money. Hence, the guinea pig comment. Pigs tend to enjoy mud. Hence, a good deal like free eyelid repairs for the 1st batchers should be considered like a nice pool of mud!

There should be little if no color variation, since I used OEM paint codes and colors. As stated previously, the paint guy at Toyota said that even if we go by the book on this, paint variations may occur from country to country. Since I obviously don't have access to foreign yarii to test the colors on, it makes color matching a very difficult endeavor on this side.
What I can guarantee is that the color match is perfect for MX yarii models. Oh, and USDM too, as far as I can tell from redyaris' and paradigm's pics.

No effect Doc. The entire top of the headlamp unit contains the bulb. You also have the side marker lamps for turn signals (and in my case the nifty LED mirror signals)....

What I meant was (refer to pic attached below -- thanks Thomas) was that the turn signal shines through 2 clear windows, and has this opaque, frosted bit in the middle. The clear window closer to the center of the car is now mostly covered up (I'm going from memory here... at work right now). So I'm wondering if it looks weird having the turn signal flashing out of this little corner under the eyelid.
Thoughts?

Well, the signal bulb and reflection in the housing will still be clearly visible from the front and sides, so it will not cause any problems in that respect. Which I think is the real beauty of this little add-on, it's almost as if the car designers wanted people to add eyelids...

Well the bulb itself is sitting on the outboard side of the housing...any reflection that gets 'blocked' will be on the inboard side.
As far as getting pulled over im sure Police from coast to coast are busy adding 'illegal eye thingies' to their lists while bridges are collapsing and mass murder is being committed.

Wow... that sucks!
I had some eyelids repainted and waited 24 hours for them to cure. Apparently, looks like 24 hours wasn't enough for some of them. :frown:
How deep are the bubble marks embedded into the paint? If it's not too bad, a good polish should be able to take care of the problem. If the marks are deeper, however, things may get more complicated to fix. It could be as easy as getting new clearcoat on, or as bad as getting the eyelid repainted.
This is all part of the learning process for me, I guess. I'm going to be waiting for at least 48 hrs from now on before I ship these. Also, I might also change the packaging material, since apparently it's not helping matters much either.
I'm really sorry for these problems, guys. I guess there are 2 ways to get this remedied: Either I reship new eyelids to you, which will take some time (24 hours to get them painted + 48 hours to cure + 24-48 hours to show up at your door), or you can get them repainted at your local body shop. They already have the color they need to get it matched, so it really shouldn't get them long at all to get done.
Of course, price is another issue. I would need you guys to let me know how much they would charge to repaint. I am willing to help out however I can, but I really don't have much money left over, so I would really appreciate some help from your side in order to minimize costs as much as possible.
I am available as always through PM or IM, so please let me know if you have any comments/concerns/suggestions.
Thanks again for your understanding! :respekt:

It shouldn't cost too much for something this small, but I really can't say for sure.
Another idea would be to place the eyelids in an oven for a few minutes. That should loosen up the rough areas and evenly distribute the paint. Of course, this would have to be done at very low temperatures so as to not burn the eyelids up. This may also mean that the double-sided tape on the bottom may become unusable after this procedure.
I've been trying to contact the painter, but he's not available at the moment. My suggestion then would be for you guys to hold off on doing anything to the eyelids until he tells me what should be done to fix them properly.

I got mine yesterday, and they too had the bubble wrap issue. I ended up using some miguires (sp?) swirl and scratch remover for over an hour and got about 85% of it off. you can still see it, but only if you look at it just right in the light.
when I first opened the bag it smelled like wet paint... the weird thing is only ONE if my lids had the issue! the other was fine.
my main concern is that the left headlight (when sitting inside the car) does not sit flush with the hood. the right lid is perfect (except for some nicks in the fiberglas....) and sits flush. anyone notice that too? the left one also doesnt look quite the same as the left.
overall they are nice and I appreciate your time and effort developing them!

OK, now this I'm really concerned about. Is the eyelid correctly aligned and pasted on top of the headlight? Does the left eyelid have the marks as well?

Is the eyelid correctly aligned and pasted on top of the headlight?
Yes, it is aligned and pasted on there the same as the other one... its like the lip that holds the tape on is about 1/4 inch too long and sticks up.
This pic shows the left headlight, the lid is sticking up:

This pic shows the right headlight, same angle. notice how flush it is:

This is the left headlight again, showing how much it sticks up from the hood:

I guess that when it rains, it pours!:brokenheart:
Those people who will be repainting please PM me so that I can send you the $20 difference.
Those folks suffering from "raised lip" syndrome can cut through the offending extra height by using a dremel. All one would need to do is basically cut the base of the lip (where the tape resides) and change the tape's position to the side. That should work out just as well, and maybe even look better than the right one, since one can adjust how high to cut the eyelid, and hence improve flushness significantly.
Was that clear? I could take some pics if it helps you guys out more.
